  • This man is a rambling fool. He repeats the vast numbers of Catholics, there were vast numbers of facists and repressors ( as an example), numbers do not show goodness.

  • I saw a clip of this video somewhere, and I could barely make out Stephen's face in the back, and I immediately though "oh my god (lol) is that Stephen Frye and Christopher Hitchens in the same room? I HAVE to see that!".

  • it's like the modern day Newton and Einstein together as a team haha

  • Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry together?!?! My mind = BLOWN! This is way too amazing.

  • Whenever I see a debate of this nature (and this one with Fry and Hitchens in particular), I'm always reminded of the old quip, paraphrased: They're entering into a battle of wits with an unarmed man and woman.

Poor Ann Widdecombe, it's no wonder we rarely see her on TV any more ^^

  • I was so excited when I saw this because I love Christopher Hitchens and I love Stephen Fry.

  • Fry & Hitchens, the most intellectual, eloquent dream team. Lucky to have them both alive at the same time.

  • arhbishop's argument: Namedropping (world leaders herp derp), Spewing numbers (1.something billion catholics trolol), Mentioning aid for the poor and needy, not mentioning what being religious has to do with that at all, and that not all christians are catholics...

Three examples of BAD argument building.

  • Regardless of what you believe you'd be hard pressed to deny the charm of Hitchens and Fry.

  • @Jeditopteam I don't think the world could have found two other individuals who could have replaced Fry & Hitch in their compelling arguments. Maybe Sam Harris could have replaced Fry, but certainly not the great Hitch.

  • Press 1 and 2 fast. :D

  • look at the smile on stephen fry's face at the end.he cant quite believe how incredible hitchens is.for him it must have been like taking a bazooka to a knife fight.I love hitch,he gave me hope for the future of mankind.he is the real jesus.

  • Press 9 to skip to Hitchens.

  • Could have sat the pope and arch bishop of cantobury there hitch would have still ripped them a new arsehole

  • Seriously? Those are the people they chose to represent Catholicism's possible positive effect? Wow. One conservative MP and an extremely conservative Nigerian Archbishop? That wasn't set up to fail in the slightest bit...

  • 07:45 to skip the bullshit.

  • Fry and Hitchens?

No one else ever had a chance.

  • Asking if the audience still doubts whether the Catholic Church is a force for good after his anaemic and scatterbrain argument perfectly sums up the arrogance of this disgusting cult.

  • I wouldn't want to have been debating against Hitch if the subject was "DayDreamAscent's YouTube Preferences".

  • I'm confused, the Catholic church looks pretty. But that's about it. It covers up child rape in fear of destroying their already heavily tarnished reputation, it condemns the use of birth control, and contraception in countries CRAWLING with the deadly AIDS virus, it condemns the equal rights of women and homosexuals, and aided the Nazis in the time of their reign. Not to mention it's CRAWLING with holocaust deniers.

Honorable mentions are indoctrination and scientific ignorance/oppression.

  • First guy: I think God is good because I like him The End.

  • If this was a basketball game, it'd be Michael Jordan + Lebron James vs Garry Coleman + Urkel.

  • Stephen fry and hitchens epic duo.

  • When 'His Grace' started speaking, I could not believe my ears! His arguments sound like he constructed them with fridge magnets and plasticine the night before - he sounds so childish

  • what the fuck--do they think they can win points with a black guy?

  • @asifthroughsleep I know! Pissweak trying to play the race card. They should've got Rat-zinger to defend the church instead of Urkel and the Hunchback of Notre Dame

  • RIP Christopher Hitchens

  • Ha ha. Hitchens flirting with the presenter as the bish speaks.

  • 1:40 in, he has no idea who he's debating against, if he knew he was against stephen fry, he wouldnt even try.

  • After watching the first five minutes i almost feel like someone picked Wydacome and the Bish to debate Hitchens and Fry just for a laugh

  • 3:42 poop, teeheeheehee!

  • having a glass of spirit to honor the spirit of Hitch... what an absolute brilliant mind

  • I would like you bank account details... And sort code...

  • RIP Christopher Hitchens.

  • Many people are relieved they won't have to face Hitchens on debates anymore. He will be sorely missed in the world.

  • I think the Priest deserves the respect for his speech and he does make a few really good points but it's such a narrow view of things. There is no doubt there is good in SOME parts of the Catholic Church but at the same time, there are a lot of things which are bang out of order. There is no 'true' answer which is why there is always room for intellectual debate. I hope Christopher Hitchens' legacy will live on for years to come.

  • hahaah he said pope like poop

  • The worlds I.Q has dropped today by many points.

  • RIP Hitchens. What a great man he was.

  • I need to go buy whiskey now.

    Goodbye, Christopher Hitchens.

  • Raise your glass for Christopher, RIP you magnificent bastard.

  • HA. I listened intently to the bishop, to his speech, and promptly started laughing when the real intelligence came forward.

  • Rip C.H.

  • RIP Christopher Hitches! This video is only one of the many reasons why I love you! You will be missed!

  • Hahaha I realized Fry and Hitchens were going to win when I heard their names but I got my proof with the priest's opening statement. It was the most ridiculous of appeals to emotion I've ever seen in an official debate.

  • The first guy.

Bless him, he has no idea who he's up against.

  • this is like watching barcelona against acrington stanley b team

  • The first speaker from the religious side does nothing moar than wishful thinking...

Couldn't they claim Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry winners right from the start?

  • Religion is like a Penis.

    It's ok to have one

It's ok even to be proud of it

But dont pull it out in public and wave it around

And dont force it down the throats of children

  • How can he say so much and at the same time..... not say anything at all?

  • There is a pigeon in your bank account.

  • Hitchens and Fry together?

    Nothing could counter that.

  • @TisJokar It's almost unfair, nobody could possibly win against those two. Even if Jesus himself walked in I think he'd have trouble arguing his point.

  • @ecureuil85 At the risk of sounding presumptuous to those of religious beliefs, its quite possible that Jesus of Nazareth might decide that the Catholic Church ISN'T a force for good in the world. Stephen questions at the end of his argument whether or not Jesus would think kindly of the pomp, authority and hoarded wealth of the Catholic Church and the Vatican. Considering that he was a poor Jew who walked among the beggars, peasants and the sick, that's actually a very good question.

  • @amida41 True, though I was more picturing Jesus arguing the existence of God in general against two extraordinarily intelligent and articulate atheists. I know that's not the subject of debate, but I still would pay good money to see it and imagine Hitchens and Fry would probably triumph!

  • @ecureuil85. dont down grade Jesus, He wins all debates bcuz of His perfect saving blood sacrifice. He wins all debates defending His word and His Father.

  • MONEYSS!!!!!

  • i love how half the comments on this are about the actual debate, while the other half are pretty much conspiracy theories lol

  • Did he say devote his life to an institution? Ahh damn this guy is beyond delusional.

  • wow, what a formidable team..

even god itself could not... wait that's ridiculous.

  • The irony that the black archbishop's religion is a relic of white catholic colonialism.

  • @asdodge1 spot on.

  • I can't believe that there are actually people in the world who dislike Christopher Hitchens. That is so weird.

  • @ScientificThought There has to be opposing views, or else how could we say what is right?

  • @ScientificThought might have something to do with his sexist views and his unwavering support for the Iraq War despite the fact that there were never WMDs and thus the war was based on false pretenses. other than that, he was a wonderful fellow atheist.

  • @ScientificThought It's because he was a drunken, rude, aggressive cunt. And I'm a fan.

  • @ScientificThought I'm an atheist and I dislike his views on the iraq war.

  • @ScientificThought As long as there are people who are afraid of the truth and ignore self-responsibility, there will always be people who dislike Hitch and their ilk. The day that humanity throws off the shackles of this medieval, illeterate and malignant beleif called religion, this will be the day where they will praise Hitch for what he had accomplished.

  • 1:36 hitchens didnt applaud :)

  • @rockermanmatt if you'd be so kind, please provide your proof. i know he was in support of the war in iraq but they were not for the reasons that you state, why would american and british oil interests be of any interest to christopher hitchens? how could he personally profit from it?

  • Everything about Anne Widecombe seems Grotesque.

  • @LuvLennonMcCartney ...Yes..unfortunate female..hell on the eye, the sensibilities a n d the ear...

  • stephen fry and christopher hitchens in the same room...blows my mind

  • @rockermanmatt Have you even listened to Christopher Hitchens discuss his reasoning? Or did you just read something like "Christopher Hitchens advocates war on irag?"

  • @rockermanmatt Hitch is the man

  • Amazing work Hitchens and Fry! Keep it up!

  • to sum up, the guy says rcc is a globalist organization who takes people's money, throws it around as if it was theirs to give away, and that their mission is really all about money, and no real mention of their endless genocides, inquisitions. They still teach "crusades" are heroic (to the face of the families who were wiped out, the cultures, etc.. Right?

  • "Link hands across all divides.....except with the homosexuals...ahem"

I can't be the only one that heard that, right?

  • Thank you for posting this, TheShwaNerd.

  • "The force of values", ok stop a second! The catholic church has nothing to do with giving values to people, morals are distinct to all humans. The church makes it sound like were all evil before the church teaches us morals or values!

  • @patsybob That's exactly what the Church teaches us, and that if we were ever to leave it, we would burn in hell for all eternity. You may have been able to threaten people like that a few centuries ago, but not anymore. The people of the world are more educated than back then, we know we can make our own way in the world. As I have always said: We have no need of the Church, or even Religion, anymore in this time of Science!

  • That Catholic is lying. They don't give indiscriminately to anyone, a believer or not. My grandfather in WW2 was in Europe doing a forced march, and the Catholics were giving water to people......but only if they were Catholic. There were other denominations doing the same. Really sickens me (what denomination was Jesus? NONE of them). Anyway, the Salvation Army did help him, and anyone indiscriminately, so THEY have my respect.

  • i think that the catholic church should worry less about curing HIV and do a bit more about their stance on condoms which results in the disease spreading in the first place!

  • lol at 3:27 Fry is thinking, "What the fuck is he on about."

  • Comment removed

  • Why would you put Stephen Fry and Christopher Hitchens against Anne Widdecombe and John Onaiyeken. It's like putting Mike Tyson in a boxing match with Stephen Hawking.

  • @IceManSudan cawn i have your turtles

  • FOWCE FOWCE

  • How many battalions has the poop? I understand the accent, but you think he'd be able to properly say pope.

  • i realised at 1:17 that the motion against had already won.

  • Well, so far the first speaker has been at the podium for 3:30 and is yet to make a single worthwhile point...

  • 1.2 billion of 6.6 billion is 10.3 percent?

    derp?

  • @tay11tr I think he said 17.3 percent. The math sounds closer to accurate, but I didn't check it.

  • Who else saw some of the head lines at the bottom?

  • Well, at least religion has given us some nice music.

  • The archbishop is only stating statistics and providing useless rhetoric.. Why is he in an intelligence debate?

  • @andremag74 Because he is the smartest one they´ve got...

  • @makito8best7 Dire times for the catholic church.

  • Read the news ticker at 6:07 sums religion up quite nicely I think.

  • Hitchens and Fry opposite you in a debate must be SCARY AS HELL!! You know you're going to get owned.

  • Hitchens and Fry are fucking awesome!

  • What an imbalanced debate. They'd have been better off getting a washed up politician and the aftershave guy from the toilets to speak. Oh wait...

  • @johnykoop ahahaha aftershave guy! I can imagine him going "No spray, no lay!" now

  • @khazal12 freshen up for the punarnaaay!

  • That fit black woman has definitely slept with Hitchens before.

  • If only all religious people thought like this representative of Catholicism... I have nothing against religion. I have something against the effects it has on people all over the world.

  • Had to skip the priests bit as I wanted to stay awake for the rest of it. Such a dullard, another byproduct of religion.

  • @liamdhardy You skipped half the debate?

I bet you tell religious people they're closed-minded and ignoring evidence, too.

Do all us Atheists a favour and at least use reason to come to your conclusions. Otherwise, you're just listening to Hitchens preach.

  • @molewizard I concede I should have watched it all. I originally skipped his intro but watched the rest of his talk, as that was at least engaging in debate instead of just reading his well rehearsed rhetoric. I have now watched his intro and I am no further convinced of his argument. Hope this is ample reasoning against your contrary assumptions Mr Mole Wizard.

  • @liamdhardy Got to agree, the guy is thick as fuck. But it is a debate, so it's unfair to be biased.

  • @molewizard Isn't that what religious ppl do anyway such hypocrisy

  • @babyranks4 How is deliberately not being biased hypocritical when your opponent is the one that is biased?

  • i wish i could stick my tongue down anne widdecombe's mouth and feel her nether regions and she'd tongue me too, then when we would be done, she'd sing to me sum of her hymns in her screaming/choking chicken falsetto whilst cuddling and i'd get re-aroused and we'd do it again, and on and on til i had to go to work agin, the next morning, at which time all the promises i'd made her the previous night were to be like a rug i'd yank out from under her stubby-calved legs, and i'd kick her to th'curb

  • Stephen Fry and Christopher Hitchens vs these two? lol. U wouldnt put Mike Tyson in a fight against Ronnie Corbett.

  • Thumbs up if you would still do Zainab in her twighlight years.

  • @justnotcricket Is Zainab the moderator?

  • @stoprainingonme ya. journalist zainab badawi. i think old friend of hitchens.

  • @justnotcricket OK. Yeah I'd do her, twilight years or otherwise!

  • de katlic chuch

  • Shit, I would never debate Hitches and Fry even if they were taking a pro puppy killing stance.

  • @tq3eufiy For fucks sake, they win because it's the truth. If they took a pro-puppy killing stance they would not win. People are so fucking obsessed with admiring Hitchens (in particular). Come on, grow up.

  • @mithilag

    U mad

  • @mithilag besides, a pro puppy killing stance is far too easy to argue :) i mean seriously are some animals just to cute to be killed/eaten and worn ;)

  • And after this....UK, September 2010, 600.000 with the Pope......

  • what sort of defence was that? all, ALL religion is a force for BAD, killing in a "gods" name is retarded

  • 1 person is catholic, sucess!!

  • The "force" of indoctrination.

  • 7.30 massive fail

  • lol when he says pope

    it sounds like poop

XD i dont know why thats so funny

  • Stephen Fry is The Lord Of Lords, The King Of Kings, The Conquering Lion Of The Tribe Of Athiests....when he speaks...hear his ROAR.

  • @ddbd yep, and also Dawkins

  • @ProudEnglishman1 nah, dawkins too meek n mild

  • @ddbd here here

  • Do see Chris Hitchens in the youtube vid: 'Christopher Hitchens on Q TV'. Brilliant.

  • 6:24

"islamists in somalia stone a man to death but say they will spare his pregnant wife until she gives birth"

    how merciful!

  • I'm atheist but I recognize a stacked deck. If this is the best the catholic church could bring to a debate, they're in serious trouble.

  • @mormonjoe pedobear approves this comment.

  • @mormonjoe wtf is with your analogy? Is that meant to be funny?

  • @mormonjoe that's quite an image.

  • @mormonjoe Um...ew.

  • @mormonjoe Nice simile there buddy

  • @seaninboise This isn't the best the Catholic Church could bring to the debate. The people who manage these Intelligence Squared debates thought it would be interesting pitting two genii atheists against two imbecile Catholics in front of a heavily prejudiced audience. Would have been interesting if they actually used reasonably clever Catholics. I'm afraid you can't say fairer than that...

  • Nobody can win a discussion against Chris Hitchens, he is a great man!

  • that bishop did actually make a good case, in my opinion, but all his progress was cut back and lost further when anne took the podium. If he had chosen a debating partner who knew how to make a good case then the catholic church wouldn't have had such a hard hitch slapping. However, they were always bound to lose. who can reckon with the combined forces of Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry? Landslide victory for those against the motion. well done steven and chris.

  • this whole debate is one long hitchslap

  • A man that barely speaks english, and a woman with a nasty voice, taking it up against Hitchens and Fry.

that is just not fair people, even if u put a thousand catholics vs them 2 its still gonna be a slaughter/victory for the atheist side:)

  • Ahem... FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!

  • There's little questioning the innate bias from the majority of the audience in this debate. It's indicative of Britain, there's always been an inherent sense of hatred of the Catholic Church in Britain, manifested by fact Catholics weren't emancipated till 1800s and still can't be monarch. If the debate concerned the C of E, this reaction would not be so. Do you see Fry and co. campaigning against sex abuse in C of E? This audience is prejudiced; a sorry state of affairs in UK

  • @trixwiz7, yes because celebrities should campaign for every single issue that they believe in. Oh please.

  • @wander099 Sarcasm appreciated, good point. I'm saying that in England there's a penchant to vilify the Catholic Church, the evidence being that if there wasn't these celebrities would attack the C of E and other denominations as well. Instead all you hear about is the wrongs of the Catholic Church. I think it stems from an age-old bias, I'm just sorry it's so prevalent today. But it's not unique I suppose, among Catholics in Ireland a prejudice exists as well...

  • @trixwiz7 So, the Catholic Church, one of the largest organisations on Earth, is unable to stand up to scrutiny and criticism? Or shouldn't be subjected to it?

  • @Jude2Mahoney Of course. The Catholic Church can be subjected to scrutiny and criticism. A lot of the time this scrutiny and criticism is well founded. But I posit this, should the Catholic Church be subjected to praise and veneration? If you think, it should be subjected to scrutiny and criticism a balanced appraisal requires asking whether praise is deserved etc. Something so many on YouTube and in this audience seem unwilling to do. I think a lot of people are ridiculously biased

  • I like the concept of 'imaginary friends' when you look at religion. We all had them when we were little.

  • Oh dearrrr. I feel sorry for the lady chairing this debate, how difficult would it be to remain neutral in the discussion?
