I saw a clip of this video somewhere, and I could barely make out Stephen's face in the back, and I immediately though "oh my god (lol) is that Stephen Frye and Christopher Hitchens in the same room? I HAVE to see that!".
Whenever I see a debate of this nature (and this one with Fry and Hitchens in particular), I'm always reminded of the old quip, paraphrased: They're entering into a battle of wits with an unarmed man and woman.
Poor Ann Widdecombe, it's no wonder we rarely see her on TV any more ^^
Your Grace? Please. You think talking to a sky daddy makes you special? @Jeditopteam I don't think the world could have found two other individuals who could have replaced Fry & Hitch in their compelling arguments. Maybe Sam Harris could have replaced Fry, but certainly not the great Hitch.
look at the smile on stephen fry's face at the end.he cant quite believe how incredible hitchens is.for him it must have been like taking a bazooka to a knife fight.I love hitch,he gave me hope for the future of mankind.he is the real jesus.
Seriously? Those are the people they chose to represent Catholicism's possible positive effect? Wow. One conservative MP and an extremely conservative Nigerian Archbishop? That wasn't set up to fail in the slightest bit...
Asking if the audience still doubts whether the Catholic Church is a force for good after his anaemic and scatterbrain argument perfectly sums up the arrogance of this disgusting cult.
I'm confused, the Catholic church looks pretty. But that's about it. It covers up child rape in fear of destroying their already heavily tarnished reputation, it condemns the use of birth control, and contraception in countries CRAWLING with the deadly AIDS virus, it condemns the equal rights of women and homosexuals, and aided the Nazis in the time of their reign. Not to mention it's CRAWLING with holocaust deniers.
Honorable mentions are indoctrination and scientific ignorance/oppression.
When 'His Grace' started speaking, I could not believe my ears! His arguments sound like he constructed them with fridge magnets and plasticine the night before - he sounds so childish
@asifthroughsleep I know! Pissweak trying to play the race card. They should've got Rat-zinger to defend the church instead of Urkel and the Hunchback of Notre Dame
I think the Priest deserves the respect for his speech and he does make a few really good points but it's such a narrow view of things. There is no doubt there is good in SOME parts of the Catholic Church but at the same time, there are a lot of things which are bang out of order. There is no 'true' answer which is why there is always room for intellectual debate. I hope Christopher Hitchens' legacy will live on for years to come.
Hahaha I realized Fry and Hitchens were going to win when I heard their names but I got my proof with the priest's opening statement. It was the most ridiculous of appeals to emotion I've ever seen in an official debate.
@TisJokar It's almost unfair, nobody could possibly win against those two. Even if Jesus himself walked in I think he'd have trouble arguing his point.
@ecureuil85 At the risk of sounding presumptuous to those of religious beliefs, its quite possible that Jesus of Nazareth might decide that the Catholic Church ISN'T a force for good in the world. Stephen questions at the end of his argument whether or not Jesus would think kindly of the pomp, authority and hoarded wealth of the Catholic Church and the Vatican. Considering that he was a poor Jew who walked among the beggars, peasants and the sick, that's actually a very good question.
@amida41 True, though I was more picturing Jesus arguing the existence of God in general against two extraordinarily intelligent and articulate atheists. I know that's not the subject of debate, but I still would pay good money to see it and imagine Hitchens and Fry would probably triumph!
@ecureuil85. dont down grade Jesus, He wins all debates bcuz of His perfect saving blood sacrifice. He wins all debates defending His word and His Father.
@ScientificThought hitchen is a right wing fool who used to be on the left and change hes ideas to help hes bank balance. That what people like u and others cant understand
@ScientificThought might have something to do with his sexist views and his unwavering support for the Iraq War despite the fact that there were never WMDs and thus the war was based on false pretenses. other than that, he was a wonderful fellow atheist.
@ScientificThought As long as there are people who are afraid of the truth and ignore self-responsibility, there will always be people who dislike Hitch and their ilk. The day that humanity throws off the shackles of this medieval, illeterate and malignant beleif called religion, this will be the day where they will praise Hitch for what he had accomplished.
@rockermanmatt if you'd be so kind, please provide your proof. i know he was in support of the war in iraq but they were not for the reasons that you state, why would american and british oil interests be of any interest to christopher hitchens? how could he personally profit from it?
@rockermanmatt Have you even listened to Christopher Hitchens discuss his reasoning? Or did you just read something like "Christopher Hitchens advocates war on irag?"
to sum up, the guy says rcc is a globalist organization who takes people's money, throws it around as if it was theirs to give away, and that their mission is really all about money, and no real mention of their endless genocides, inquisitions. They still teach "crusades" are heroic (to the face of the families who were wiped out, the cultures, etc.. Right?
"The force of values", ok stop a second! The catholic church has nothing to do with giving values to people, morals are distinct to all humans. The church makes it sound like were all evil before the church teaches us morals or values!
@patsybob That's exactly what the Church teaches us, and that if we were ever to leave it, we would burn in hell for all eternity. You may have been able to threaten people like that a few centuries ago, but not anymore. The people of the world are more educated than back then, we know we can make our own way in the world. As I have always said: We have no need of the Church, or even Religion, anymore in this time of Science!
That Catholic is lying. They don't give indiscriminately to anyone, a believer or not. My grandfather in WW2 was in Europe doing a forced march, and the Catholics were giving water to people......but only if they were Catholic. There were other denominations doing the same. Really sickens me (what denomination was Jesus? NONE of them). Anyway, the Salvation Army did help him, and anyone indiscriminately, so THEY have my respect.
i think that the catholic church should worry less about curing HIV and do a bit more about their stance on condoms which results in the disease spreading in the first place!
Why would you put Stephen Fry and Christopher Hitchens against Anne Widdecombe and John Onaiyeken. It's like putting Mike Tyson in a boxing match with Stephen Hawking.
If only all religious people thought like this representative of Catholicism... I have nothing against religion. I have something against the effects it has on people all over the world.
@molewizard I concede I should have watched it all. I originally skipped his intro but watched the rest of his talk, as that was at least engaging in debate instead of just reading his well rehearsed rhetoric. I have now watched his intro and I am no further convinced of his argument. Hope this is ample reasoning against your contrary assumptions Mr Mole Wizard.

@tq3eufiy For fucks sake, they win because it's the truth. If they took a pro-puppy killing stance they would not win. People are so fucking obsessed with admiring Hitchens (in particular). Come on, grow up.
@mithilag besides, a pro puppy killing stance is far too easy to argue :) i mean seriously are some animals just to cute to be killed/eaten and worn ;)
A genuine debate would not pit two articulate Oxbridge men against a stammering recent convert and a cleric whose first language is not English and whose talent is preaching not debating. A real apologist or theologian would have gutted the other side. So it was a setup, even the audience was maybe a setup. Anyone must intelligently discern these things before forming any opinion. Unless of course, you're watching the video because you hate the church already and just seeking affirmation.
@seaninboise This isn't the best the Catholic Church could bring to the debate. The people who manage these Intelligence Squared debates thought it would be interesting pitting two genii atheists against two imbecile Catholics in front of a heavily prejudiced audience. Would have been interesting if they actually used reasonably clever Catholics. I'm afraid you can't say fairer than that...
that bishop did actually make a good case, in my opinion, but all his progress was cut back and lost further when anne took the podium. If he had chosen a debating partner who knew how to make a good case then the catholic church wouldn't have had such a hard hitch slapping. However, they were always bound to lose. who can reckon with the combined forces of Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry? Landslide victory for those against the motion. well done steven and chris.
There's little questioning the innate bias from the majority of the audience in this debate. It's indicative of Britain, there's always been an inherent sense of hatred of the Catholic Church in Britain, manifested by fact Catholics weren't emancipated till 1800s and still can't be monarch. If the debate concerned the C of E, this reaction would not be so. Do you see Fry and co. campaigning against sex abuse in C of E? This audience is prejudiced; a sorry state of affairs in UK
@wander099 Sarcasm appreciated, good point. I'm saying that in England there's a penchant to vilify the Catholic Church, the evidence being that if there wasn't these celebrities would attack the C of E and other denominations as well. Instead all you hear about is the wrongs of the Catholic Church. I think it stems from an age-old bias, I'm just sorry it's so prevalent today. But it's not unique I suppose, among Catholics in Ireland a prejudice exists as well...
@trixwiz7 So, the Catholic Church, one of the largest organisations on Earth, is unable to stand up to scrutiny and criticism? Or shouldn't be subjected to it?
@Jude2Mahoney Of course. The Catholic Church can be subjected to scrutiny and criticism. A lot of the time this scrutiny and criticism is well founded. But I posit this, should the Catholic Church be subjected to praise and veneration? If you think, it should be subjected to scrutiny and criticism a balanced appraisal requires asking whether praise is deserved etc. Something so many on YouTube and in this audience seem unwilling to do. I think a lot of people are ridiculously biased

Shit, I would never debate Hitches and Fry even if they were taking a pro puppy killing stance.
tq3eufiy 1 year ago 3
@tq3eufiy For fucks sake, they win because it's the truth. If they took a pro-puppy killing stance they would not win. People are so fucking obsessed with admiring Hitchens (in particular). Come on, grow up.

I'm atheist but I recognize a stacked deck. If this is the best the catholic church could bring to a debate, they're in serious trouble.

Nobody can win a discussion against Chris Hitchens, he is a great man!
atheistfromaustria 1 year ago
that bishop did actually make a good case, in my opinion, but all his progress was cut back and lost further when anne took the podium.

A man that barely speaks english, and a woman with a nasty voice, taking it up against Hitchens and Fry.
that is just not fair people, even if u put a thousand catholics vs them 2 its still gonna be a slaughter/victory for the atheist side:)

This audience is prejudiced; a sorry state of affairs in UK
trixwiz7 1 year ago
@trixwiz7, yes because celebrities should campaign for every single issue that they believe in. Oh please.
wander099 1 year ago
@wander099 Sarcasm appreciated, good point. I'm saying that in England there's a penchant to vilify the Catholic Church, the evidence being that if there wasn't these celebrities would attack the C of E and other denominations as well. Instead all you hear about is the wrongs of the Catholic Church. I think it stems from an age-old bias, I'm just sorry it's so prevalent today. But it's not unique I suppose, among Catholics in Ireland a prejudice exists as well...
trixwiz7 1 year ago
@trixwiz7 So, the Catholic Church, one of the largest organisations on Earth, is unable to stand up to scrutiny and criticism? Or shouldn't be subjected to it?
Jude2Mahoney 1 year ago
@Jude2Mahoney Of course. The Catholic Church can be subjected to scrutiny and criticism. A lot of the time this scrutiny and criticism is well founded. But I posit this, should the Catholic Church be subjected to praise and veneration? If you think, it should be subjected to scrutiny and criticism a balanced appraisal requires asking whether praise is deserved etc. Something so many on YouTube and in this audience seem unwilling to do. I think a lot of people are ridiculously biased

I like the concept of 'imaginary friends' when you look at religion. We all had them when we were little.
