  • The "Arab perfume" tree is Aquilaria agallocha. Its Malay name, gaharu, is derived from the Sanskrit term 'agaru', meaning "heavy." In the 16th century, Portuguese traders in Goa, Malacca and Macao, adapted the word 'agaru' to 'pao d'aguila', or "eagle wood".

Agar trees are very rare, having been severely over harvested. There are now some large plantations in Assam.

  • The "Shake Hands" tree may be a Shorea (known in India as "Sal"), whose timber, known as Merati, is highly regarded as a durable construction wood. In Buddhist tradition, it is said that Guatama Buddha was born under the branches of this tree while his mother was en route to birth him in his grandfather's kingdom.

Some Shorea (but not Shorea robusta) are on the IUCN 'Red List' of endangered species.

US Patent 4534981 is for "Cosmetic compositions containing the fat of Shorea robusta".
