Great group. No argument for me. They were a great combined package that worked for the time that it worked. It would be awesome to see D, M & C reunite, record something really current, and tour. Could just be wishful thinking. Bottom line is that the group must be great to have people still arguing over them.
@jazzscherzo Well said...Mary can't feel victimized because she had the talent, uniqueness, work ethic and ambition to be a superstar. The talent was all there from day one regardless of her screwing the boss.
Flo became consumed by her bitterness and jealousy, instead had she played the cards right - she could have been more successful than Mary. It is really sad things turned out the way they did for her. She made terrible foolish decisions in life, especially that nodogoodink Chapman!
Am I the only one who likes this because the other girls are singing lead as well?? As sweet as Diana's voice was it did get boring after a while of listening to supremes songs.
People need to accept the fact that it was Diana that made the Supremes the success that they became. I don't know why some people don't want to acknowledge that fact. Flo and Mary contributed to the success of The Supremes, but they could have been replaced by others with good voices. But you can't replace the unique star quality of Diana Ross. Period!
@tommiexander You need to understand that Diane was not or ever was the star of The Supremes. She thought she was,but there was that 2000 reunion that flopped without Mary and Cindy. Then she started hitting the bottle and arrested for drunk driving, and just couldn't handle the rejection of SUPREMES fans..Only her fans who don't remember The Supremes bought tickets, but SUPREMES fans stayed home.Learn the difference.
Please, how old are you or were you even born during the days when the Supremes were on top? I am from the ol school so I think that I know a bit more than you do about the Supremes. And yes people wanted to see Diana Ross with the old Supremes, but she had the replacement Supremes on tour with her and people wanted to see all the originals again.

@GGE47 that was just you.Flo and Mary may have had somebody who picked them as their favorite, but most loved all three the same.I saw them on February4,1967 and they were just great.Diana Ross and any two others just wouldn't do.In August,1968 they returned with two shows.I don't want to tell this story again, because I already have on the What's My Line video by LilMissy. The first time I found myself looking at Flo and Mary quite a bit, even Diane was doing the talking.Supremes fans had final say
It doesn't have any thing to do with loving all three the same. It was about who was the main star of the Supremes. And if you are really "64", you should know what the real deal was with most of the Supremes fans back in the day. Yes most fans didn't like it when Flo left but without Diana, the Supremes would have never been as successful as they became; whether you want to accept it or not. End of story...
@tommiexander I doubt that very seriously.Diane's swell head would have shown herself more quickly without Florence and Mary.I wondered what's with all of these faces she makes?I never cared for that and it did seem to be egotistical.I just let it go because I did love them so much.I did not like her rolling those eyes, but let it go.No doubt she was trying to bring extra attention to herself, but was not successful because Flo and Mary were distractions from that and they were a group.Without HDH

Those three slipped into these Beatles numbers and routines so effortlessly... and wherever they were, tired, jetlagged dressed up and shoved on stage - they performed impeccably. Suppose that's what talent is, you can sing or you have to work at it - they just sang - anything!
@nallielove The Beatles recorded this song originally. The Supremes covered it in tribute to them. They also recorded an album in tribute to the British Invasion entitled "A Bit Of Liverpool" but it does not feature a recording of this song - unfortunately.
The Beatles were influenced by motown as They covered the Marvellettes Please Mr Postman, the Miracles You Really Got a Hold on Me. and said Mary Wells(My Guy) was their favorite american singer and had her open for them in 1964(same yr My Guy was No.1 and Wells exited Motown. ironically the same year the Supremes hit big with Where did our Love Go? 1964 was one heck of a year. for the Beatles and the Supremes and Motown.
ross is working the hell out of her vocal and the dance routine while mary and flo look and sound like sleepwalkers. some (jealous) people say that ross walked over mary and flo to become a megastar but early clips like this prove that all ross really had to do was just walk right past them and keep stepping.
That is not true. I will say that Diana had more charisma but Flo and Mary sound AMAZING! All three had great voice. Don't compare them. All three women brought so much to The Supremes.
i love flo and i used to love mary, but the truth is the truth. had it not been for ross' relentless drive, god-given taken, star power and that kittenish voice, the world would NEVER have even heard from those other girls.
What you said is only part of the truth. Yes Diana was the star, she had the "IT" factor, but what really took them to stardom was them as a group. Diana was a major part of the group
success, she was the leader, but lets not forget that she was only one member of the group. Mary, Florence and Diana are responsible for becoming successful, not Diana alone.
It's pretty evident here, in this unpolished performance, that all three girls have quite unremarkable voices. It seems to me that the success of the Supremes was more due to Berry Gordy and his producers' 'Fabulous Motown' sound rather than the girls' raw talent.
I disagree with that. They are singing this song in a key lower than what they normally sing in. Their performance is treated more like broadway then concert. They have to perserve their voices more later, and that pretty much par for the course. But here they aren't giving all they've got, which could be bad as well as good. They were still very talented. Listen to the last recording they did together, "Someday. . We'll Be Together. "
Diana Ross did not record "Someday, We'll Be Together" as a Supremes record. It was intended to be her first solo single; however, it was nevertheless issued as "Diana Ross and the Supremes." Therefore, the Supremes did not back her up on the recording.
I hoped the girls really wanted to do this Liverpool stuff back then, and weren't pressured to do so. There's a big difference between the Motown/Detroit sound they were natural in... to doing this Liverpool/Beatles bit. Was this Gordy's way of them penetrating the huge British (white) market? If so, too bad. The Supremes and the Motown Sound should have sold themselves. Yes, they were talented and could do any kind of music. But knowing the racist 60s, this seems like a kind of sell-out.
its clear we have a impersonator on here. to set the record straight i am the real blkshepherd. and diane has the most unique interesting voice and performance. so for the creep who used my name eat crow. Diane is the unique one here.
Diana has always been the one that smiled the hardest, shook her hips hardest, swung her arms wider... The other two look like zombies compared to her, especially Mary.
I know NOTHING about why so many people hate on Ross, why someone would just explain this to me. But I've noticed it's always the same few YouTube usernames. I agree with you about Diana having the 'edge'. She had/has an very unusual and pretty voice and just look at her eyes, and then the other two girls. There eyes are DEAD compared to what Diana is doing in her performance.
The hate some have for Diana is due to the fact that her oldest daughter is fathered by Barry Gordy. And that was the reason she got the spotlight all of the time, so the story goes. Well, since she and Barry were warm, some believe she was influencing Barry's decision to let Flo go in the mid 60s. Everyone knows what happened to Flo thereafter, and thus the hatred for Lady Di. I know there's more to it than that but since that's the belief, it's why she gets hate like shes does. . .
Thanks for explaining that my friend. I've been trying to get my head around all the gossip and accusations for a long time - so thanks for just writing it out so succinctly. I'm not a huge Diana fan, and have nothing against the other girls - But watching the early clips - It's Diana who's the one you watch. The others girls might have good voices but they could have been replaced by other good voices. Diana has charisma, which means she would succeeded regardless of whatever chances she got.
"The others girls might have good voices but they could have been replaced by other good voices."
YES, that's exactly right!! Name any other good group like this, you could say the same. How else could one tell if they had something extra if not by going solo? That's the test of metal!!!
My implication was when the other girls went solo, they didn't do as well as Diana. I did not say she needed to go solo. One could very well tell she was solo material just by listening.
@hanaysex and Patti labelle left the Labelle and bluebells, Martha left the Vandellas,Beyonce left Destiny Child..and they are not Divas? GET over yourself! you sound foolish
Rhonda was born in 1971!!! After she had left the group. It's hard for people to accept that the bottom line is.... Diana was chosen because she was unique and gave the group a distinctive sound that set them apart from the other black girl groups at that time. It was not about whether or not she sounded better. It was about the unique quality of her sound. But most don't understand the marketing behind popular music.
Now what I wrote was not opinion, it's popular belief. I hate to even think that was believed. Yes, I do agree it was the unique quality she had, the way she sang and moved and was presented. Same with the Temps. David Ruffin stood out more than the others, aside maybe from Eddie Kendricks who himself had a unique tenor voice. This is evident in just about every group. But the Temps spawned more lead singers later on post Eddie/David than others of their peers.
Just wanted to say as well, that Flo and Mary had beautiful backing vocals. They were the ones largely giving the group it's sweet, youthful sound: but one that was possibly peered by the Marvalettes. However, the charisma and the sweetness was owned by Lady Di herself. BTW, Mary was the dark and lovely one, whereas Flo was the "yella" sexy one!! I enjoyed all three for what they were separately and collectively.. . .
That's what I've been saying all along. Flo's voice was soulful which was not unique in those days and Berry chose Diana as lead because her voice was different than other girl groups and would appeal to both Whites and Blacks. (aka more sales). Obviously me made the right decision because with Diana as lead they became the top selling female group ever. And I don't think that if Flo or Mary had been lead singers if they would have become the greatest female group in history.
@tommiexander Thank YOU and YOu are correct..its NOT about who has the loudest and soulfulest..which didnt go over well with the white audiences..diana has Mass appeal to this day..anyone not believeing that had only attend one of her shows and you will see people from all walks of life..mary and flo martha and the vandellas the marvelettes NONE could cross over better than the supremes with diane on lead
ross is working the hell outta that routine. mary and flo just look like the routine is working them. gorgeous girls but m & f are just going through the motions. they're not owning it the way ross does. this early in the supremes legend all the smart money is already on ross.
Well to each his own....that so called "trying too hard" paid off in a legendary career and one that will be referenced for generations to come. Rest to sure....as this group continues to be researched and referenced, it will be Ross as the central focus regardless of any opinions of her.
Maybe that's why Ross went and stayed at number One for so long. Even Mary said Ross always gave her all to any project she was involved in. Great work ethic we could all learn. Look where it got Ross.
all this bullshit about her being so pretty what has that have to do with Singing? Back in the 60s when listening to the radio you didnt give a ratz ass who was pretty. u only heard a voice. that voice was Diana Ross. YOu can hate diane all you want but her name is in the HIstory Books Forever with Two Stars on the walk of fame..when u accomplished a fraction of what she has then come back and talk. Funny None of you haters of ross has 18#1 songs and no one knows who the hell your are Nor care!
all you folks can hate on diane all you want but clearly Diane voice made the supremes Special. Flo this Flo that get if it a rest. Her voice was not a standout and I was a fan since 1964. Loud is NOt always GOOD and Many folks were LOUD but did not make it..Good grief get over IT damn! IF flo was all of that NOTHING would have Stopped her from being a solo star like aretha. If flo was so great how come other record companies like Atlantic, Columbia didnt snatch her up like they did Aretha?
I don't know about the two on the ends but damn that one in the middle need my dick in her hairy nappy black pussy... she can put her frothy juices on my dick any day
I see why they made Diana Ross the lead singer...you need an airy, pop-like voice to cross over to white audience. They wouldn't have had the same succues with whites with Mary or Flo as lead because they have more soulful voices. Kinda like with Beyonce and Destiny's Child, Kelly and Michelle have more soulful voices and Beyonce has the empthy, pop-like like voice.
its florence and mary who make this special. its great to hear all 3 sharing lead vocals, they should have recorded this and put it on one of their albums
Flo was still having fun then and Mary was still wondering if it was real. Diana was already looking toward the future. It was Dianas voice , drive and persona that took the Supremes to the top.
i dont really agree, it was the combination of all 3 which made them special. i know flo and mary had equally as many fans as diana and the contribution to the group by all 3 took them to the top
You are the one that's drunk. Flo and Mary look like ZOMBIES compared to Diana during their performances, and always have. Flo and Mary have always sounded like zombies too
it's the androgyny thing. the supremes were doing a very bold-for-the-times cross dressing beatles thing during this period although they often wore skirts instead of the pants with this look.
I would guess, though she claims to be adamantly against it. It looks like over the years that her skin has gotten lighter, her nose thinner, etc. It's all supposition, but it has weight to it.
I agree with you. Ross's beauty emerged from the inside as she constantly evolved as a woman, a mother and an artist. To this day, she is a very beautiful woman.
Interesting that this is actually a key lower than the original Beatles version considering it's a female vocal here and the original was not in such a high key to begin with.
Actually not, they're singing it at the same octave as the Beatles only 1 step down, from D to C major...not that there's anything wrong with that,I like both versions,I just thought it was unusual considering that they're female voices and that the original wasn't so high to begin with.
just read some comments on here and i have to agree with 2 of them,Mary looks so pissed off in this clip normally she is always beaming.GREAT VERSION!!!!
Your right, and it's your right to like who you want, but it does'nt erase the fact that The Beatles were something special & has not been seen since. THAT IS A FACT! *There is something extra about it when an artist writes the song, sings the song & plays the song. I love The Supremes, and by the way, at one time they were called, The Girl Beatles.
The Supremes were not allowed to right their own songs, Florence Ballard in the early days wrote songs for The Supremes but Berry Gordy, Motown boss would not let them record and release them. Also after the Flo and Diana days Susaye Green (the last supreme) who wrote Deniece William's hit FREE was not allowed to write songs from the 70's supremes. Another thing The Supremes racked up 5 #1 hits in a row in 2 years and have had 12 #1's in total with many more top 10's and top 100's
Oh I respect the Beatles, me hailing from England myself and glad to know the country I live in has such a great history in music. Either way both The Beatles and The Supremes were and will always be remembered - truly unbeatble and utterly supreme!
It was nice to see all three trading off leads with Florence in the middle...nice line-up and a rare treat! They all did great! That's what made them SUPREME!
I n response to "Barebacker", Mary and Florence do have mics, they were an experimental cheaper type used in the "Sixties" for crowd ambience. Miss Ross has the best mic...of course. Flo and Mary still got off..though!!!
this is an excelent example of why this group should have been as it was conceived initially...Three lead vocals!!! Yes this should be digitally enhanced!!
I think if Florence Ballard would have lead this song..it would have been better. listen to her verse then the how the chorus comes right in after she sings it sounded great. Diana voice didn't fit and mary wilson was ok
OMG! What a clip ! Never knew it existed! Yep, spotted the "I need your love, girl" line, and....WHAT were they wearing ??! Thanks for posting this gem!
This is good, but I think it coulda been better. It doesn't give you that crazy feeling that the Beatles' version does, though. It woulda rocked if they had made this a single, and perfected it...
Like, my favorite line in the Beatles' version is:
"Eight days a week is not enough to show I care..."
And they didn't nail it in this version, so that's what killed it for me.
Thank you again lilmissy. This is a Beatles song and they all got to sing. The Beatles said The Supremes were their favorite group.I notice they were standing on Wednesday.Wednesday was the night Shindig came on.
Great group. No argument for me. They were a great combined package that worked for the time that it worked. It would be awesome to see D, M & C reunite, record something really current, and tour.

There eyes are DEAD compared to what Diana is doing in her performance.
aminmontrose 2 years ago
The hate some have for Diana is due to the fact that her oldest daughter is fathered by Barry Gordy. And that was the reason she got the spotlight all of the time, so the story goes. Well, since she and Barry were warm, some believe she was influencing Barry's decision to let Flo go in the mid 60s. Everyone knows what happened to Flo thereafter, and thus the hatred for Lady Di. I know there's more to it than that but since that's the belief, it's why she gets hate like shes does. . .
slimdudeDJC 2 years ago
Thanks for explaining that my friend. I've been trying to get my head around all the gossip and accusations for a long time - so thanks for just writing it out so succinctly. I'm not a huge Diana fan, and have nothing against the other girls - But watching the early clips - It's Diana who's the one you watch. The others girls might have good voices but they could have been replaced by other good voices. Diana has charisma, which means she would succeeded regardless of whatever chances she got.
aminmontrose 2 years ago
"The others girls might have good voices but they could have been replaced by other good voices."
YES, that's exactly right!! Name any other good group like this, you could say the same. How else could one tell if they had something extra if not by going solo? That's the test of metal!!!
slimdudeDJC 2 years ago
Dianna never needed to go solo to prove ANYTHING, she did it because shes a diva, straight up. She dont care bout her sistas
hanaysex 2 years ago
My implication was when the other girls went solo, they didn't do as well as Diana. I did not say she needed to go solo. One could very well tell she was solo material just by listening.

LANORDA9 2 years ago
Now what I wrote was not opinion, it's popular belief. I hate to even think that was believed. Yes, I do agree it was the unique quality she had, the way she sang and moved and was presented. Same with the Temps. David Ruffin stood out more than the others, aside maybe from Eddie Kendricks who himself had a unique tenor voice. This is evident in just about every group. But the Temps spawned more lead singers later on post Eddie/David than others of their peers.
slimdudeDJC 2 years ago
Just wanted to say as well, that Flo and Mary had beautiful backing vocals. They were the ones largely giving the group it's sweet, youthful sound: but one that was possibly peered by the Marvalettes. However, the charisma and the sweetness was owned by Lady Di herself. BTW, Mary was the dark and lovely one, whereas Flo was the "yella" sexy one!! I enjoyed all three for what they were separately and collectively.. . .
slimdudeDJC 2 years ago
That's what I've been saying all along. Flo's voice was soulful which was not unique in those days and Berry chose Diana as lead because her voice was different than other girl groups and would appeal to both Whites and Blacks. (aka more sales). Obviously me made the right decision because with Diana as lead they became the top selling female group ever. And I don't think that if Flo or Mary had been lead singers if they would have become the greatest female group in history.
tommiexander 2 years ago
@tommiexander Thank YOU and YOu are correct..its NOT about who has the loudest and soulfulest..which didnt go over well with the white audiences..diana has Mass appeal to this day..anyone not believeing that had only attend one of her shows and you will see people from all walks of life..mary and flo martha and the vandellas the marvelettes NONE could cross over better than the supremes with diane on lead

LANORDA9 2 years ago 2
Love this version!
Maybe that's why Ross went and stayed at number One for so long. Even Mary said Ross always gave her all to any project she was involved in. Great work ethic we could all learn. Look where it got Ross.
somewhereNtime 2 years ago 4
all this bullshit about her being so pretty what has that have to do with Singing?

If flo was so great how come other record companies like Atlantic, Columbia didnt snatch her up like they did Aretha?

huge10inchdick 3 years ago

It was Dianas voice , drive and persona that took the Supremes to the top.
fwsinned 3 years ago 3
i dont really agree, it was the combination of all 3 which made them special. i know flo and mary had equally as many fans as diana and the contribution to the group by all 3 took them to the top

Diana Ross all made up in this video reminds me of post-weird-surgery Michael Jackson, for some reason.
bcoombs1988 3 years ago 3
it's the androgyny thing. the supremes were doing a very bold-for-the-times cross dressing beatles thing during this period although they often wore skirts instead of the pants with this look.
branchwater7 3 years ago
No, the pants have nothing to do with it. It's the fact that before she got plastic surgery, Diana Ross looked like young Michael Jackson! Hahaha.
bcoombs1988 3 years ago
ross had plastic surgery?
branchwater7 3 years ago
I would guess, though she claims to be adamantly against it. It looks like over the years that her skin has gotten lighter, her nose thinner, etc. It's all supposition, but it has weight to it.
bcoombs1988 3 years ago
my thinking on this is that while ross has some crazy mad makeup tricks, plastic surgery isn't one of them. but you never know.
branchwater7 3 years ago 2
Diana Ross never had plastic surgery. It's all a crazy joke that Diana Ross and Michael JAckson are the same person
oldschool712 3 years ago
I agree with you. Ross's beauty emerged from the inside as she constantly evolved as a woman, a mother and an artist. To this day, she is a very beautiful woman.
branchwater7 3 years ago
Interesting that this is actually a key lower than the original Beatles version considering it's a female vocal here and the original was not in such a high key to begin with.
plectrum34 3 years ago
The difference is the girls are sing an octave up so the key would have had to be lowered
Jamesdavideason 3 years ago
Actually not, they're singing it at the same octave as the Beatles only 1 step down, from D to C major...not that there's anything wrong with that,I like both versions,I just thought it was unusual considering that they're female voices and that the original wasn't so high to begin with.
plectrum34 3 years ago
this reminds me the supremes were the rock and roll muses of the 60s their vocals are awesome

MarvelettesDude 3 years ago
Your right, and it's your right to like who you want, but it does'nt erase the fact that The Beatles were something special & has not been seen since. THAT IS A FACT! *There is something extra about it when an artist writes the song, sings the song & plays the song. I love The Supremes, and by the way, at one time they were called, The Girl Beatles.
bewaremylove 3 years ago
The Supremes were not allowed to right their own songs, Florence Ballard in the early days wrote songs for The Supremes but Berry Gordy, Motown boss would not let them record and release them. Also after the Flo and Diana days Susaye Green (the last supreme) who wrote Deniece William's hit FREE was not allowed to write songs from the 70's supremes. Another thing The Supremes racked up 5 #1 hits in a row in 2 years and have had 12 #1's in total with many more top 10's and top 100's
JonathanLGardner 3 years ago
I'm with you on The Supremes, but don't ever (not to you) match them up with The Beatles.

Still rocks, though.
