@gatortailor Then why did you click on this? Is that what you do all day? I started listening to BOA in 1972 when my friend's brother gave her If An Angel Came to See You Would You Make Her Feel At Home? I've loved JD ever since. Met him in 1997. I don't think he was the Jim Dandy I loved from way back then. Oh well, Rickie Lee Reynolds is cool. Still love the old music.
First time I've seen this clip in 37 years - it was on the UK's Old Grey Whistle Test at the time. I always remembered the tune, and the sheer swagger of Jim Dandy.
@AK2927 Same as you my friend! tried to buy the album on the stregth of this song and performance! however as you can imagine in those days not a chance! nice memory though

Roth-era VH could wipe their asses with BOA. Besides, Dave's jokes and flying kicks arent tricks --- it's called showmanship, dumbo!
@Hunkola &\ I will tell you why Van Halen went Platinum is because they were a girly rock Dont get me wrong they had some good songs but the only reason they made it as big as they did wa because of the fact they were easy on the eye. @BOBCATBIKERBABE --- Girly rock band? You must be thinking of Bon Jovi or some shit. Roth-era Halen was heavy stuff. I first saw and heard Jim Dandy and BOA at the Peachtree Festival at Rockingham speedway NC. It was dead until they took the stage. Caught them again in Knoxville a year or two later.
Theres nothing wrong with showing some penis.Guys see chicks cleavage etc all the time.I say,MORE PENIS.......Whatever happened to the days when guys wore tight pants, jeans?A girl could see what she was in for....haha.Those were the days............
i agree w/donkey dong!! i like it and jim is damnn proud of it. his pants were always as tight as they could cum, and i'm sure he's never wore under wear in his life!! awsome. sebastian bach followed his footsteps in tight pants and no underwear, doing whatever you could to expose yourself through tight leather pants.
no doubt! i never thought about that but you are right on. i grew up in chattanooga, tn and remember on the local wrestling tv production he and terry gordy (pre-freebirds) tried to call themselves the hollywood blondes. funny when you consider gordy was from chattanooga (which is even now one of those cities that feel like a small town)and hayes was from dalton, ga. i guess they figured the good ole southern boy route was a better gimmick, they were right of course.
i dont know what it is about this band but I fucking love them! Saw them live in the mid 80's they put on a hell of a show. Jim Dandy is like a psychedilic redneck shaman. cool motherfucker
i like it they're both very proud of there endowments in tight pants davit lee roth went a step further in assless leather chaps! that was one up on jim!!
Actually it's 1 bass guitar, 1 twelve string rythm guitar and 2 lead/harmony guitars. They did the three guitar attack even before Skynyrd. David Lee made his career on being a Jim Dandy copy, and BOA's drummer Tommy Aldridge played in the great OZZY line-up with randy Rhoads. Too bad there are ignorant people out there that just don't realize the greatness that is BOA.
@vristo Agreed...... BOA was way underrated in its day. When Mangrum went for the novelty of "Jim Dandy", they burned bridges that could never be rebuilt and were left in the dust by the other Southern Rock bands of the 70s.
I saw an interview with Jim Mangrum. He said in early 79's DLR asked him if he could film their show. Jim did it cause he was high, Dave did it cause he thought Jim was cool.
Yeah, you are probably right. And on at least one occasion, I am happy to say, I was one of the audience. I traded some beer for some acid (good trade and good acid) and we all lived happily thru the concert. Rock on!
I saw BOA a couple times back in the 70s, and I am sure I was screaming the loudest; looking back now it is funny to me how those guys always made sure their stuff was showing. haha, the 70's what a world!!!
I watched a movie on Netflix about VH and they compaired DLR to Jim Dandy. They interviewed Jim Dandy, old and dog ass ugly, but he said he didn't mind that DLR copied him, was cool with it. Also said that he was copieing someone else too.
The Royal Albert Hall is the number 1 venue to host concerts in London. You can bet your paychecks that Black Oak Arkansas rocked the Hall that night. Party Time!!!
Been a BOA fan since the early days. They were original, exciting, and just a good time band. Just bunch of hillbilly hippies having a good time. Look how much fun they are having when they play live. One of the biggest live draws in their hayday.
And how LOUD they were. Everybody thought that the Who was the loudest. I wonder, EXPECIALLY when they had those 2 HUGE theater horns. These were about 4' square on front and 16' long, DEFINITELY the biggest speakers I ever saw on a stage! A friend of mine walked right in front of one during a show and his ears "locked" (went silent).
If I have permanent hearing loss, BOA gave me a good time losing it!
DLR said in an interview back in the late 70's that he used to sneak in at biker bars and watch BOA. And JD has said he remembers a young DLR coming to their shows. So Jim Dandy is the original.
Neil, you've got a good memory! I saw HMK on many occasions and recall seeing this film but never matched the two. Guess I was having such a good time I can't remember. However, I do recall see BOA at The Reading Festival.
Oh, God. I just realized how much influence BOA had on my life. Not only did I worship them in the late 70's I still have the JD hair. Blonde, to the waist length. I got to hang out with Ruby Starr one night. In San Angelo, in a bar where she was playing with Grey Ghost. I gave her roadie a pic I had drawn of her, and he gave it to her. Got to hang and party with her. That was great. Sorry about the random, I am sick and taking cold meds. But that is true.
What I love about Black Oak is that there was never an "I'll kick your ass" redneck vibe to 'em. Simply a bunch back-to-the-land, naturalist, commune dwelling long haired freaks with no malice to any. Just a love of music, good weed and a lot of heavy duty balling!
Their old commune "Heaven", in Mtn. Home, Arkansas has been turned into a summer resort.... think I'll make a reservation for the "Dirty Daugherty Suite"!
I think OutKast ripped the boys off..Sounds like Hey ya! They owe ya Jim come up to Ottawa Ontario would love to see yaz been long time since in Canada
I agree with you. I remember first hearing this song in the fall of 2003, and a few days later I heard the song by Outkast, and I said "Wow! Outkast ripped off this song big time!" It's weird.....
I think you're right, OutKast bit this! It's the first time I heard this tune here on Youtube, as soon as the chorus came on it was evident. - Hey Ya! is a faster slight take on this chorus. That's funny.
What are you talking about... This has nothing to do with Hey Ya by Outkast. Another clown trying to steal more music... But what should I expect from you people.
HEY YA'LL!Yea,i'm all for some nice dude crotch.Man,i miss the days when guys wore tight pants and you could tell if they were happy to see you or not.HA,HA!Long live BOA!!!Those were the days my friend,we thought they'ld never end!!!
I saw Black Oak at the first California Jam. Drum wars were in full swing then. I also went to the second Cal Jam. Thats me on the album cover in the lower right corner without my shirt on looking toward the stage.
It's funny that the so-called "new guys" are so damn ingenious that the best they can do is rip off a song from the early 70's. Outkast can slink away and rot in a pile of shit like they deserve.
Back in the day, DLR admitted in "Rolling Stone" magazine that he stole his stage act from Jim Dandy himself. If you don't believe me, research this fact in RSM!!
Why in the hell don't any of these videos on YouTube show the vocal "intro" by Jim Dandy??!! Come on, You 'all - you're missin' rock & roll history here!!!!!
...one of the greatest ever!

I saw an interview with Jim Mangrum. He said in early 79's DLR asked him if he could film their show. Jim did it cause he was high, Dave did it cause he thought Jim was cool.

Of course you just know the band members had enough drugs between them to put down a herd of wild buffalo! lol
Bombeni 2 years ago 2
Not too mention the audience. Saw in 1973 Evasnville IN. Awesome!
TerryOlinger 2 years ago
OMG, the audience woulda had enough drugs between to put down every breed of animal in Africa!
Bombeni 2 years ago
Yeah, you are probably right. And on at least one occasion, I am happy to say, I was one of the audience. I traded some beer for some acid (good trade and good acid) and we all lived happily thru the concert. Rock on!

I saw BOA a couple times back in the 70s, and I am sure I was screaming the loudest; looking back now it is funny to me how those guys always made sure their stuff was showing. haha, the 70's what a world!!!
Bombeni 2 years ago
Looks like they got their chores done so dad let them do the gig. I love the common man aspect of BOA.

I watched a movie on Netflix about VH and they compaired DLR to Jim Dandy. They interviewed Jim Dandy, old and dog ass ugly, but he said he didn't mind that DLR copied him, was cool with it. Also said that he was copieing someone else too.

Jim Dandy said that Chuck Berry did it first.

The Royal Albert Hall is the number 1 venue to host concerts in London. You can bet your paychecks that Black Oak Arkansas rocked the Hall that night. Party Time!!!
bayouboy49 3 years ago 4
Been a BOA fan since the early days. They were original, exciting, and just a good time band. Just bunch of hillbilly hippies having a good time. Look how much fun they are having when they play live. One of the biggest live draws in their hayday.
SLH787 3 years ago 4
And how LOUD they were. Everybody thought that the Who was the loudest. I wonder, EXPECIALLY when they had those 2 HUGE theater horns. These were about 4' square on front and 16' long, DEFINITELY the biggest speakers I ever saw on a stage! A friend of mine walked right in front of one during a show and his ears "locked" (went silent).
If I have permanent hearing loss, BOA gave me a good time losing it!

i would bet ol jim was much higher than any kite in history. looks like he is havin a blast. and who better for roth to steal from.

peacehonesty - Dave Lee Roth got his moves and his singing from Jim Dandy. I love both of them but let's not get confused about who came first!

Wow, every time I see this singer...He looks like he's a copy of David Lee Roth.
It's just Roth with Van Halen sounds better

DLR said in an interview back in the late 70's that he used to sneak in at biker bars and watch BOA. And JD has said he remembers a young DLR coming to their shows. So Jim Dandy is the original.
scruffy2112 3 years ago 2
What an idiot. Roth grew up watching Jim, where you think he learned his moves. Jim learned them by just being his self and having a good time.

When I saw the Heavy Metal Kids/Nutz tour put on by Sounds for 50p in 1975 they showed this on film at the gig! Well worth 50p!
NeilThompson30 3 years ago 2

Do you agree with me that Ruby had the most "presence" of anyone?

You can throw in Ted Nugent also. Saw him im Memphis with the Motor City Madman. Yeah Tommy is great. I love his style.

Tommy played with Ted ? I did not know that. I'll add that to my memory banks.

David Lee Roth's main influence was this singer. There's definatly a resemblance to their stage presence.
floatfloaton 3 years ago
No Doubt. When I saw them (Van Halen), on their first tour in '78, Roth also paraded flashing the "V" peace sign,AKA a young Ozzy Osbourne.

This song is just cool. Compare to a vast majority of the weenie rockers out there...
Just checkout the lyrics. What more do you demand people?

After sampling BOA material, one can only assume their songwriters must have been the roadies??

What I love about Black Oak is that there was never an "I'll kick your ass" redneck vibe to 'em. Simply a bunch back-to-the-land, naturalist, commune dwelling long haired freaks with no malice to any. Just a love of music, good weed and a lot of heavy duty balling!
Their old commune "Heaven", in Mtn. Home, Arkansas has been turned into a summer resort.... think I'll make a reservation for the "Dirty Daugherty Suite"!

I agree with you. I remember first hearing this song in the fall of 2003, and a few days later I heard the song by Outkast, and I said "Wow! Outkast ripped off this song big time!" It's weird.....
CrazyDiamond5321 3 years ago
I think you're right, OutKast bit this! It's the first time I heard this tune here on Youtube, as soon as the chorus came on it was evident. - Hey Ya! is a faster slight take on this chorus. That's funny.
hellotommy 3 years ago
What are you talking about... This has nothing to do with Hey Ya by Outkast. Another clown trying to steal more music... But what should I expect from you people.

JD cracks me up. One of the best front men ever. No doubt DLR got his moves and wardrobe from JD. Is this the same Hey Ya, that Outkast did?
Thanks for posting the video. Love it.
PaBasser 4 years ago
It's funny that the so-called "new guys" are so damn ingenious that the best they can do is rip off a song from the early 70's. Outkast can slink away and rot in a pile of shit like they deserve.
gripguy41 4 years ago
Back in the day, DLR admitted in "Rolling Stone" magazine that he stole his stage act from Jim Dandy himself. If you don't believe me, research this fact in RSM!!
