I love this mod, oh god, only if they could make a Battle Grounds 3 which will be like Empire Total War, I mean with the nations/teams, for example Sweden, Russia, Poland etc...
The first round is a clear example of why it is important to synchronize firing. And also of why you must be quick and cooperative to form up your battle line.
If you don't synchronize, the volume of fire (the weapons are inaccurate so you need as much musket balls going down range as possible to compensate) is not enough to take enough enemies out before they start returning fire.
And if you aren't quick, by the time you've formed your line and start firing, they've fired off some volleys...
@Varyalover That tactic doesn't work very well. It just makes a big blob for the enemy to fire at and when the first rank fires the smoke will obscure the second ranks aim. Plus it will take time to get people in position and once they are you lose any mobility so you can be easily flanked.
A better strategy is to have 1 line. Break it into 2. 1 part of the line can break off at any time and flank the enemy. As one line you can still do the constant firing line but not worry about big blob.
@Varyalover In real life, that worked well if one was defending a fortified spot, and the term for that is volley fire by ranks.

So they bot make a smaller target for the enermy plus they can fire by rank so it would seem a constunt fire. Which would mow down the enermy. Or when they charge they go in a formation the napolan used like 4 across and the rest behind them so when the enermy open fire the maximum they can kill is 4 people

@Harvest8888 why not just not have lines? you can be seen a mile away so whats the point? if you stand in line with 10 or so other people then you can get picked off by a jaeger or two, it doesn't really matter if you're firing 11 balls at the enemy if they can hit you miles away.
last time i played this, the last person to kill me was the guy telling everyone to get in line, i killed 2 and injured 3 when they were in a line, i didn't manage to kill anyone outside of the line though.
@ParkWayDrive011111 It is a line battle server there are no jagers or any other classes allowed. Everyone knows it isn't an effective tactic given that the game does not contain the elements of real life that would have made it effective but it is still fun to replicate it as best we can.

Line battles are pretty much reenactments of battlees in the 1800's. if you dont follow the rules its like signing up for a ww2 reenactment then running by yourself into the enemy lines, not pretending to die and ruining everyones fun. then you will be removed from the battlee like you do in bg2
@Meteora999 1. real line battles were not fought like that, they would fire in a cycling motion, not all together, it allows you to be constantly firing upon your opponent.
2.they most likely would have a small attack force strike at the sides whilst the main force suppresses them into a state of panic but since the effects of panic or surprise cant be simulated well on a source mod, why not just ACTUALLY go to a reenactment then?
@ParkWayDrive011111 Cause reenactments are scripted events where no one is being killed. Plus...you are just watching not actually able to take part in one. It really depends on the servers, the number of players available, and the admins. Most smaller line battles consist of people leading a line and doing what they want with them while still observing the rules.
Larger ones sometimes have 2 lines with 1 fixing the enemy and the other coming behind for a volley to the flank and a charge.
@ParkWayDrive011111 you are right about #2. but in bg2, any group with more than 40 people lags horribly so multiple groups is hard to do sometimes. 1 is only for elite units, not for regular infantry and especially in the revolutionary time in which the game is based. We still do it in the bg2 regiments for training and tournaments tho.
@ParkWayDrive011111 and ACTUALLY going to a reenactment probably happens once or twice per year and requires you to get OUT of the house. I would love to go to a reeactment but i dont know when they are, and playing a game is much easier.

@jordandraper11 napoleon copied the attack in column from Frederick the Great, which worked great for freddy but it was outdated by waterloo. With faster reloading attacking in column meant you were slowed down climbing over your own dead and it was suicidal. look up enfilade fire, then you will realize how ludicrous it was by this time

Eh this video doesn't show all the dickheads. But they do mess stuff up regularly. The thing is that these servers are maintained by an army of admins who police everything and aren't afraid to ban or kick.
Because in CSS one man can kill a lot of enemies, because of automatic weapons. Here, a dickhead could run at the enemy, shoot one, and get stabbed fifty times by the enemy team during the half hour it takes to reload.
And by the way, dickheads who opened fire as soon as the enemy was visible are now known as snipers:P
Its kinda stupid that royal army runs like goblins (hl2 standard). They should make the units look like more vigorous. And they should make maps with artillery, or artillery class.
It is a mod so you have to buy the base game which is half life 2 first. Then you download the mod for free from the mod site. Half life 2, or any of the other source games will run the mod.
I believe that the sdk base or orange box sdk base is all that you need. You must have some sort of source game to install the sdk though. I would just make sure that the sdk is installed. I believe the orange box one might be needed...but if you have a source game you have access to both even without owning orange box. Just download it and see if it works.
It was last night around 9-10 eastern on dynasty server it ended with the server crashing when the admin asked who wanted to be commander and like 15people used their mics at once lol.

Each team has three classes
regular infantry with a musket and bayonet
officers that have sword and pistol and move fast
frontiersmen/hessian jaegers with rifles which are very accurate but slow to load and no bayonet just a crappy butter knife or sword
only regular infantry are allowed in line battles as officers are useless at distance and too fast for the line and the sharpshooters are cheap
Overall the most effective and easiest soldier to use is the regular infantry.

You have to pay for a source game. Any of these will work Half life 2, Day of defeat source, team fortress 2, orange box, counter strike source etc.
the mod itself is a free download. There are also a bunch of other great mods you can get. A very worthy investment of only like 10-20 bucks.
