I know what this is, I have seen this several times in CA when I was stationed in 29 Palms. It's a naval missile. From time to time the US Navy fires missiles off the coast of CA towards the Mohave desert. The first time I saw it, it looked like it was coming right at our base. Then it exploded in the air and spun outta control. I saw it a few more times after that and the navy said they were testing a new system. Nothing to fear.

Launches from Vandenberg Air Base are common from the south central California coast. Growing up in San Diego I saw several. They all looked very much like this. In this case, I would have to say Minuteman launch from Vandenberg. Don't give up though. Keep that camera handy and trained on the sky and you've got about a 75% chance of capturing a "UFO" someday.
