@zimjordanj No, I think the actual reason is that they tried to have a sequence of stages, just like the old Castlevania games did, but since linear stages are either boring or hard to make in 3D, they tried to imitate Super Mario 64 and have mission-based gameplay.
They should have instead gone with Symphony's formula and simply made a castletroid with atmospheric and explorable areas rather than silly level- and mission-based gameplay.
This game was just poorly reviewed because the C64 version was rushed and didn't come out as good as hoped, so this game which added more of what was originally planned but critics still viewed it as much of the same game with not too many improvements (but it's a dream come true if you liked C64). I think it was overlooked and would have scored better if this was the original C64 game. But also, the N64 Castlevania games are kind of empty and there is no level up system.
Lol 3 levels that do some more damage IF you find powerups/sub weapons and NOT die... it's way different than your regular rpg game where you get to level 99+ by killing enemies, getting experience, and increasing hp and mp (that's what I mean by levels, and btw Paper Mario has this and it's on the N64 too). Later Castlevania games have this and more weapons.
I said the levels are empty because all there is is gold and health in torches and enemies in big areas.
I thought the Art Tower was cool but to be fair, all the time of day doors (and you have to go back through some) are annoying and if you don't know how to manage the camera then the mine cart and elevator areas could be even harder. This level is almost like a dull maze at first and it takes extra time to get items. Just be glad that the 4 time of day doors after the first one didn't lead to yet MORE time of day doors! I still think Cornell should have a bad ending.

Although the Art Tower sucks, you have to admit it has some pretty good music. I love this game. Dunno why there's all the hate around it...

@crapheadandidiot The music is actually from stage 2 of CastleVania Bloodlines for Mega Drive/Genesis.

@satan915 You have a level up system with the weapons. This game is awesome. It's not empty in the least.
