If the Luftwaffe had committed to building large four engine bombers in significant numbers early in the war, it COULD have had a significant impact on the outcome of the war.
They would have been able to bomb Soviet production when it was moved east of the Ural mountains.
They would have been able to hammer London and the rest of Britain, possibly ending the war before America could get in it.
The fw 200 was prone to breaking up because of stress on its frame only 280 odd planes were built. They were effective until the catapult launched hurricrane were brought into service.
I wonder if the germans had developed a proper anti shipping bomber to replace fw 200 by 1942 1943 .How the battle of the alantic would have been affected?
@daggers93 Plus it also had a dodgy breaking system that usually set the wheels on fire. This particular incident is shown in two newsreel films of Hitler visiting his then Finnish Ally, Marshal Mannerhiem. The German film shows two Luftwaffe men rushing towards Hitlers Condor with fire extiguishers, whilst the Finnish newsreel footage shows the Condors wheels smoking away.
In military development, it was designed as a four-engined long-range airliner, the fw 200 was adapted to fill a Luftwaffe requirement for a maritime patrol aircraft. The awesome looking aircraft was only built in small numbers though, but the fw 200's effect on Allied shipping earnt it the sobriquet "Scourge of the Atlantic."
great airplane...poor mission...what wings could have that bird have earned if it wasnt a high range reconnaisance and bomber plane...This plane could have been I great passenger plane in ntercontinental air traffic...but that insane Hitler and his tools must have started that WW2 cruelty...it looks good in camouflage...but its missions wasnt..the missions were stupid
I just love the wistful, waxing romantic bullshit of ignorants talking about the war. It's fucking war. Nothing romantic about it.

@harrow233 I think you mean the old Revell FW 200 kit as Airfix never produced this aircraft as a model kit.

Given the amount of resources devoted and tied to its neutralization, it was a quite efective weapon.

Some great action footage. The Condor also used as Hitler's personal plane.
