As for religion stopping him from killing himself. That doesn't seem true, either, as just after his wife died he tried to induce a heart attack by running up and down the stairs. What stopped him from committing suicide in his grief was a beautiful message left in a poem by his wife that told him to ''not to be hasty to leave” until he had lived the life that was his.
@MehemetAkir '“I could not take away my life, because that would be letting Helen down. But I would be so happy if I could die tomorrow.” - Peter Cushing.
actually i read somewhere that the reason he didnt commit suicide after his beloved wife's death was because of his strong religious beliefs. He also loved his wife very much that he described living his life after her death was just killing time...he said that his only joy was being reunited with her after death...God bless him and his wife...great peron and great actor...
@pookinapooky He seemed to be more spiritual than religions. His communing with his wife on a mountain top is not very generically Christian. I mean, I do not know what faith he was, I will guess he was Anglican, but English people have traditionally been more spiritual than overtly religious.
Ethical might be the right word: ''I am not a religious man, but I try to live by Christian ethics. Helen has passed on but she is with me still. She is all around. What I am doing is merely existing – longing for the day when I shall die and join her for ever. We will be together again but time does not heal.” So he was not religious, as some claim, merely ethical and a nominal Christian, like most older people of his era. His ethics do shine through as he was known as a friendly guy.
This is one excellent scene, probably the best in the film. We have John Bannerman (Peter Cushing) using a religious insult to get Mehemet Bey to reveal himself as possibly the man behind The Mummy's vengeful return. Great acting by both Cushing and George Pastell and a real highlight of Peter Cushing in one of his many heroic roles. Thanks very much for posting this.:-)
I don't think that Peter Cushing's (RIP) character is insulting his religion, only looking at it for what it is using rational and logical thinking. The way an intelligent person should! Look at the guy that believes in it though! WOW! A little on the nose don't you think? No matter what religion one believes in... If you don't believe the same as they do...You're the enemy! Freakin' religious people...They'll be the death of us all! Perhaps they can peruse the non-fiction section at a library.
Je me permets de rappeler que ce n'est pas Peter qui parle mais son personnage. Ne mélangeons pas tout. Pour avoir entretenu une correspondance avec lui je peux dire qu'il était un homme de Dieu, profondément croyant et bon.
I'm a huge fan of Peter Cushing--I have a slew of his movies but this one is one of my top three favorites, alongside Hound of the Baskervilles and Brides of Dracula.

@MegaUncleDude Except that, in the context of the film, the rational and logical doctor is wrong. There is a big shambling mummy walking about.

@CoryTheRaven True enough. In the context of the film.

I'm not sure what SpiderShaman3323 is on about. Peter Cushing has been dead for 15 years.
