Whale research is important. Recent population growth, abnormal weather and diastrophism may cause food shortage in the future. It is not wise to depend only on livestock industry or fish farming for meat or fish. Whale meat can be important food. Further, if there is no whaling, a number of the whales will grow too large and they will eat too much fish damaging fish resource considerably.

2% of the japanese population eat whale meat, 40% of shelved whale meat in Japan is in fact dolphin meat but is packaged as whale meat, both dolphin AND whale contain toxic mercury which is the cause of many deaths and over half a million birth defects effecting both child and mother. So frankly if they do continue to whale they're just hurting themselves short and long term. The japanese whale industry ended off 2 million dollars in debt last year anyway.

Every single species out there has been affected, they are inbreeding because their population is so low. i dont mind that they are a food source but the main reason people are against whaling is the inhumane way they kill the whales. It takes over 30 mins for a whale to die and up to 5 harpoons or more. Also the whaling ships from japan come into the australian whale sancutary. That is illegal.

People need to stop bitching about Japanese whale hunting. They are responsible enough that they hunt whales/dolphins at a rate that is not threatening their population. It is sustainable. It is not like the all-out, unchecked whale hunting done in the 1800's and earlier for blubber and baleen. Whales are animals. It is fine to kill animals to sustain a human being, for food. No difference between killing a whale and killing a deer for food.

After the nuclear accident, Japan have a radiation problem. But we support Fukushima farmers. Not all their products are dangerous, so lots of people buy their products, of course there are radiation checks. Some time ago a TV program made a joke about radiation there, they got huge criticism.
