I love the part where the seal sees the waves then starts booking across the beach as fast as his flippers will take him. Hope he's doing well out in the wild.
you can tell a true seal for an otariid or "false seal" a few ways:
1) Otariids have ear flaps. that's where the name comes from
2) Otariids have slimmer bodies than seals
3) Otariids have larger front flippers that are weight-bearing on dry ground. Otariids propel themselves with their front flippers and steer with their back ones, while true seals are the opposite
It is awesome how she takes a second to look at the people as if to say "Gotta Go" and then she just runs for the ocean like it's a long lost friend. In fact, maybe she knows her friends and family are out there just waiting for her return.
This was an absolutely inspiring video. It's incredibly refreshing to watch a beautiful scene such as this one. Thank you to the dedicated people who help rescue, rehabilitate, and release these adorable creatures!
Northern Fur Seals are in groups at rookeries before they are weaned and again later you will find them in groups when they reach sexual maturity. There are 2 or 3 years, when they are sub-adults, when they are very much loners staying deep out at sea. PeeWee has just as good a chance to survive as any other Fur Seal her age.
Doesn't seals live in groups?! And she has been away from the free sae for several months. How is she going to manage a life on her own?! No seal friends at all. Hmm. She seemed happy to see the ocean, her home, but maybe she comes back and realise the humans are gone....at the shore..
I'm just wondering how it's going to survive, how will it even know where to get food when it's led such a comfortable life being consistently fed by humans?
@harmyk1 This Northern Fur Seal was not raised in captivity, but merely came into a marine mammal hospital for a 2 1/2 month stay. She foraged successfully for nearly a year before stranding and she will continue to forage after her release.
For everyone calling this a sea lion: you are correct, but the name "Fur Seal" is still valid. This is because Peewee is classified as a False Seal, and is a seal in name only.
@AkaTako88 This IS a Northern Fur Seal. They are closely related to California Sea Lions, Stellar Sea Lions, Guadelupe Fur Seals, etc. all species of Otariid. True seals such as Harbour Seals, Gray Seals, Harp Seals, Hooded Seals, etc. are all species of Phocid Seals. Otariid are also known as eared seals and Phocids as earless seals. Phocids along with Otariids and Walrus all make up the family of Pinnipeds.
OMG look how it happy to return its home... really heart touching! I think this must be the same hope on every animal, locked in the cages. Return in to the home...
Canada's commercial seal hunt costs more money than it makes. The worldwide demand for seal products is shrinking, and the European Union has joined with nations around the world who have decided that they don't want Canada's dead seals.
This is truly an historic moment - a moment that marks the beginning of the inevitable end to Canada's commercial seal hunt. But the Canadian government continues to prop up this dying industry, encouraging the slaughter to continue.
@suzhuz10 Yeah, because Canadians are known to be real assholes../sarcasm. Take a hard look at your own country before you get on your high horse, you ignorant clown.

And then I'd try not to imagine the little dude going to make friends and his fellow animals thinking he's autistic or otherwise not-quite-right-in-the-head. /all Im sayin
