@ASwiftHippie not really I would say Defragging your hard drive or disk drive of any kind helps moreso than formatting. I would recommend downloading a free ''defragger'' for your operating system. Watch a tutorial on youtube showing you how to use that program. Defragging doesn't remove data although an error could occur therefore you should backup! Good luck!

I wish I knew this a few years ago. I kept trying to format my HDD using windows while it was running. The whole purpose of the CD is to allow your computer to run off the CD so that your HDD will not be in use while it is being cleaned. Thats why when you run an OS install or recover CD you need to run it from the BIOS so you don't use your HDD.

@BIG96SMOKE It seems like I don't understand you right, but assuming you got the same copy as your friend installing two *same* licenses of Windows XP is illegal according to Microsoft. As an answer to your question, yes it will wipe off your OS, and how. Seems like you better should download Eraser and destroy any unneeded sensitive data to save you from that pain. PS: You should look at your license sticker on the back, it is a different license and, therefore, legal.

I only asked because the computer has viruses, which i think may be the more dangerous viruses... and instead of trying to fix it (which would be tedious and fiddly) i wanted to find an easier way... that was why i asked, and what i meant... i just didnt give enough info...

Do you have to have the program that you use before you restart your computor? I have tryed restarting the computer with the disk in and nothing happens, I have tryed booting from disk and it boots normally, and I cant open the file that I have saved to the disc as its an .iso... What do I do?

@Davey16350 I think you should get a tech brain first. Download an ISO burning program and burn the ISO to the CD using it. If you save it as an ISO, then it won't work because the computer does not understand *single* ISO files floating on a CD.

If you have a genuine windows disc and its cd key you can put it in and choose the format hardrive option. then install a fresh copy of windows.

it is very easy :)

just put the disk in your computer and restart it.

then when it is restarting press something like F12 to go onto the Boot menu and select boot from disk. then choose which hard drive you want to install windows on and click ok :)

click upgrade if you want to keep all the stuff you already have or custom if you want to start with a " New " computer ;)

Here's what to do if you have a virus...

1) Go to Window's site; download Windows Defender even if oyu have it.

2) Run many scans with it.

3) Download Spyware Doctor, JUst search it on google and look for a valid download site.

4) Run scans with that also... I preer full system scan.

5) Both antivirus/malware should find viruses and delete them, but only Sypware Doctor will make you restart your computer after it deletes so many. Once you restart your computer it should be good.

Most of you who say you have a "virus" that won't let you do anything like download things... have malware. Look it up and search what it is. It's a program that usually is designed to look like an antivirus program that says you have infections.... which you most likely don't but it says you do so it won't let you do anything in those pgrograms until you buy the product and "remove" the "viruses". It's a way for hackers to make money.
