These people are not just ignorant of; where an ignorant person may will ask why it's impossible and actually listen or just not care ether way, they will ignore any information that contradicts the idea that they can make a perpetual motion machine.
@krapptacular we dont need to make hydrogen, its the most abundant element in the universe. Trouble is, here on earth, most of it is locked up in water molecules. We have to put energy in to unlock it, then when it is burned back into water, we simply release the energy we initially put in. We still need to get the energy from somewhere (eg sunlight or by burning oil)
@frosty956 I know what hydrogen is and know how much there is. Water comes from burning hydrogen.Solar is the way, but no one can afford it. But burning oil is toxic for life. We need something clean and i know this.
@krapptacular It seems the best option is 'solar thermal' use sunlight for heating water to run steam engines in ordinary power stations, apparently an overall better efficiency and much cheaper than PV cells, hydrogen could be used for energy storage for when the sun isnt shining at night or when it is cloudy. The problem isnt so much expense, but lack of investment by business, who would much rather invest in the presently more lucrative coal and oil business.
@frosty956 Sounds good and i agree with you on lack of investment in this area, not to mention china has sucked up some u.s solar companies with there perks. I'm a machinist and can progam c.n.c or make any parts we need. Send me some ideas and we can start a business and make some money. Yeah if only i could. Need money to make money. LOL
@truthisouttheir Ha! But he probably *did* have access to a good education. It's just that many people -- tens of millions; indeed hundreds of millions -- refuse to accept the good educations afforded to them. :(
@NotSoOldHippy i know what ur saying but i will say the education system doesn't really let you pick the classes you want. I have just been thinking about how much useless shit ive had to learn for school that doesn't help you get a job at all and have been told i cant take classes because i wasn't declared a certain major or needed a gym class... then when u declare a major u have to take a list of classes they pick which usually don't include organic farming or permaculture or homebrewing...
Christo, its possible but impractical because resistance must be present and acted against in order for energy to be generated. There is almost no way for such a system to exist on earth.
Here is a free energy idea. The sun doesn't charge you to shine, and the wind doesn't charge you to blow(shut up perverts). All you got to do is be able to harvest it. Isn't that a novel idea?
@TheAtheistPaladin Ha! Plus the amount of energy expended trying to make "free energy" among believers is enough to push every car from one end of Europe to the other end.
Why is perpetual motion impossible, it isn't in theory. All you need is a system with zero resistance, noise or any other consumer of energy. Getting more out than you put it in theoretically impossible, but a perpetual motion system seems at least theoretically possible.
Perpetual motion isn't impossible, in an environment where there is 0 friction. Orbiting planets, galaxies, etc, are pretty close, though there is hydrogen and dust and crap floating around in space. If you could create a perfect vacuum in some location in space and then put a mass inside and get it spinning, it will never stop of its own accord.
However, that is irrelevant down here on earth, in an atmosphere, where we want it to do work.
@OccamKant "Perpetual motion isn't impossible, in an environment where there is 0 friction." - Sure, but these people want to generate energy from it, thus introducing friction. I am sure if you could harness power from the planets you would be extracting energy from somewhere.
@TheSpankymonkey We do -- I mean scientists do. The Voyager and other spacecraft use planetary gravity assists to accelerate and to chage direction, altering the trajectories of the planets as well.
@OccamKant The moment we make it do work, it loses energy, regardless of where it is. In space engineering they use carbon fibre flywheels floating on ~frictionless magentic bearings - a great way to store energy, but if they do any work they slow down.
Somehow I'm reminded of the people in sailing boats, but more often people in canoes and kayaks who thinks they're leaving energy in their wake, and that by pulling a water turbine they could tap into this "wasted" energy.
It get's pretty cumbersome explaining time and time again that you will only add more drag. Common sense isn't as common as it ought to be. Or perhaps scientific literacy isn't what it ought to be.
@NBM397 Heh, I'm reminded of trying to fly by pulling up on your own bootlaces! I agree about scientific literacy, but I'm also somehow glad that there are people who genuinely have a go. And maybe some people just need to experience it not working before they'll accept it won't work. It would perhaps be more worthwhile if their experiments tackled something we don't know, but in principle there's nothing wrong with challenging even our most fundamental ideas.
@Squagnut "The moment we make it do work, it loses energy, regardless of where it is. "
I know. I was just pointing out an example of where you could have "perpetual motion" - but of course you could never actually draw "energy" off of it, or at least any more than is stored in its current momentum. So you could "store" energy by getting it to move, and it will continue moving forever, until you draw that energy back off, and then it will stop.
But if you get out more energy than you put into a system, then you've actually invented a device that creates energy, and energy can't be created or destroyed. That's why it's impossible.
@dudev That is why I said perpetual motion with 100% efficiency is theoretically possible, but as others have pointed out, a 100% efficient system is likely no possible on earth. But worse still, a perpetual motion machine is useless because it does no work. Even if it could be accomplished, it would just be a curiosity.
@christo930 "Why is perpetual motion impossible, it isn't in theory."
Finding a system with zero friction, zero noise is just barely possible - the ultra cold realm is the closest you can get - super fluidity and superconductivity. Send a current around a loop of superconducting metal and it could circulate forever - or as long as you continue to provide the kilowatts of energy maintaining the system near -273Celcius. Of course the "free energy" people need to do even better than perfect. (1)
Even with that endlessly circulating current - how do you *know* its circulating? By measuring the mag field it generates - and your measurement will take away a little energy. Every time you look there will be a little less energy - because it costs energy to "look". So as long as you never look and you never turn off the refrigeration - it will keep circulating. The "free energy" people want to do more than look they want to extract useful energy - which is just nutty.
Has there been, even in the distant past, significant increases in energy efficiency as a result of R&D into perpetual machines? It seems to me that increases in efficiency, taken to it's logical conclusion, would end up with a machine that once endowed with energy would run forever, but do no work. So even if a perpetual motion machine doesn't work, couldn't they discover increases in efficiency thereby requiring less fuel? Obviously, the low hanging fruit has been discovered already.
@christo930 "Has there been, even in the distant past, significant increases in energy efficiency as a result of R&D into perpetual machines?"
No, probably not. The big leaps in energy efficiency has been increasing pressures and/or temperatures to make friction losses relatively smaller. "Research" into PMs is usually focused on some flawed understanding of some basic principle, not on reduction of friction.
@FredricF I am talking about the distant past where they might have increased efficiency. I have heard of a number of ancient perpetual machines that were able to operate for much longer periods of time than the modern junk science of magnets.
@christo930 ; Many hobbyists face built extremely low-energy devices. There was Cook's Clock "Perpetual Motion" which ran off of the energy in barometric pressure (using a large volume of mercury). Better bearings may have been invented in the attempt to build perpetual motion devices; I have no idea.
But it is interesting to see every try I have to say, and it would be really exalting if some of them worked then I would be impressed lol ;-P coz then we have a scientific problem. Regards and have a skilful time. Pinge
Mistake seems to be not getting that the 'bouncing magnet' will only go to previous high level if given a push from the rotating magnets. The best he could hope for is near equilibrium. Gravity is just acting as a spring.
However he could spend years never quite figuring it out before adding more springs, solenoids & rechargeable batteries to baffle himself even more.
It's like when my cat wanted me to open a door, yet the one next to it was already open.
the "driver" magnet is also pointed in a bad direction; such a position opposes the forward motion - not that you can eventually get it to run forever on its own
Rubber bands, a thing to hold water on the side, a large ramp to roll it all down ...has he tried all of these things? I doubt it. Electro-magic perpetual motion is impossible without some sort of spring and some tape. Does he have tape? Sweet Jesus man, put some duct tape on the thing.
Friction, gravity, etc. In deep space, it might perform differently. IF this theory could be suspended in a magnetic field, floating, it might be different. But it would take SO much energy just to suspend the rotor, I doubt it would ever power itself without a nuclear reactor to supplement the whole thing.
It might amuse you to know that a name such as Ord-Hume would be called "double barrelled" in the UK. Then again maybe not...
Even an engineer as well grounded as I K Brunel was fascinated by perpetual motion and spent a good deal of time and money on it. He tried to use a temperature differential rather than magnets but it amounted to the same thing.

There's a huge error in your video: You expecting these people to actually look something up. That is like telling a creationist to look up genuine facts about evolution they're not going to do it. These people are not just ignorant of; where an ignorant person may will ask why it's impossible and actually listen or just not care ether way, they will ignore any information that contradicts the idea that they can make a perpetual motion machine.

If there was only a way to make hydrogen cheaply, we would be set.
krapptacular 5 months ago
@krapptacular we dont need to make hydrogen, its the most abundant element in the universe. Trouble is, here on earth, most of it is locked up in water molecules. We have to put energy in to unlock it, then when it is burned back into water, we simply release the energy we initially put in. We still need to get the energy from somewhere (eg sunlight or by burning oil)
frosty956 5 months ago
@frosty956 I know what hydrogen is and know how much there is. Water comes from burning hydrogen.Solar is the way, but no one can afford it. But burning oil is toxic for life. We need something clean and i know this.
krapptacular 5 months ago
@krapptacular It seems the best option is 'solar thermal' use sunlight for heating water to run steam engines in ordinary power stations, apparently an overall better efficiency and much cheaper than PV cells, hydrogen could be used for energy storage for when the sun isnt shining at night or when it is cloudy. The problem isnt so much expense, but lack of investment by business, who would much rather invest in the presently more lucrative coal and oil business.
frosty956 5 months ago
@frosty956 Sounds good and i agree with you on lack of investment in this area, not to mention china has sucked up some u.s solar companies with there perks. I'm a machinist and can progam c.n.c or make any parts we need. Send me some ideas and we can start a business and make some money. Yeah if only i could. Need money to make money. LOL

@truthisouttheir Ha! But he probably *did* have access to a good education. It's just that many people -- tens of millions; indeed hundreds of millions -- refuse to accept the good educations afforded to them. :(
NotSoOldHippy 5 months ago
@NotSoOldHippy i know what ur saying but i will say the education system doesn't really let you pick the classes you want. I have just been thinking about how much useless shit ive had to learn for school that doesn't help you get a job at all and have been told i cant take classes because i wasn't declared a certain major or needed a gym class... then when u declare a major u have to take a list of classes they pick which usually don't include organic farming or permaculture or homebrewing...
truthisouttheir 5 months ago
Christo, its possible but impractical because resistance must be present and acted against in order for energy to be generated. There is almost no way for such a system to exist on earth.
SCRulerShinoda 5 months ago
Here is a free energy idea. The sun doesn't charge you to shine, and the wind doesn't charge you to blow(shut up perverts). All you got to do is be able to harvest it. Isn't that a novel idea?
TheAtheistPaladin 5 months ago 3
@TheAtheistPaladin Ha! Plus the amount of energy expended trying to make "free energy" among believers is enough to push every car from one end of Europe to the other end.
NotSoOldHippy 5 months ago
Why is perpetual motion impossible, it isn't in theory. All you need is a system with zero resistance, noise or any other consumer of energy. Getting more out than you put it in theoretically impossible, but a perpetual motion system seems at least theoretically possible.
christo930 5 months ago
@christo930 "Why is perpetual motion impossible"
Perpetual motion isn't impossible, in an environment where there is 0 friction. Orbiting planets, galaxies, etc, are pretty close, though there is hydrogen and dust and crap floating around in space. If you could create a perfect vacuum in some location in space and then put a mass inside and get it spinning, it will never stop of its own accord.
However, that is irrelevant down here on earth, in an atmosphere, where we want it to do work.
OccamKant 5 months ago
@OccamKant "Perpetual motion isn't impossible, in an environment where there is 0 friction." - Sure, but these people want to generate energy from it, thus introducing friction. I am sure if you could harness power from the planets you would be extracting energy from somewhere.
TheSpankymonkey 5 months ago
@TheSpankymonkey We do -- I mean scientists do. The Voyager and other spacecraft use planetary gravity assists to accelerate and to chage direction, altering the trajectories of the planets as well.
NotSoOldHippy 5 months ago
@OccamKant The moment we make it do work, it loses energy, regardless of where it is. In space engineering they use carbon fibre flywheels floating on ~frictionless magentic bearings - a great way to store energy, but if they do any work they slow down.
Squagnut 5 months ago
@Squagnut
NBM397 5 months ago
@NBM397 Heh, I'm reminded of trying to fly by pulling up on your own bootlaces! I agree about scientific literacy, but I'm also somehow glad that there are people who genuinely have a go. And maybe some people just need to experience it not working before they'll accept it won't work. It would perhaps be more worthwhile if their experiments tackled something we don't know, but in principle there's nothing wrong with challenging even our most fundamental ideas.
Squagnut 5 months ago
@Squagnut "The moment we make it do work, it loses energy, regardless of where it is. "
I know. I was just pointing out an example of where you could have "perpetual motion" - but of course you could never actually draw "energy" off of it, or at least any more than is stored in its current momentum. So you could "store" energy by getting it to move, and it will continue moving forever, until you draw that energy back off, and then it will stop.
OccamKant 5 months ago
@OccamKant That's kind of what I figured, thanks for the clarification.
christo930 5 months ago
@christo930
But if you get out more energy than you put into a system, then you've actually invented a device that creates energy, and energy can't be created or destroyed. That's why it's impossible.
dudev 5 months ago
@dudev That is why I said perpetual motion with 100% efficiency is theoretically possible, but as others have pointed out, a 100% efficient system is likely no possible on earth. But worse still, a perpetual motion machine is useless because it does no work. Even if it could be accomplished, it would just be a curiosity.
christo930 5 months ago
@christo930 "Why is perpetual motion impossible, it isn't in theory."
Finding a system with zero friction, zero noise is just barely possible - the ultra cold realm is the closest you can get - super fluidity and superconductivity. Send a current around a loop of superconducting metal and it could circulate forever - or as long as you continue to provide the kilowatts of energy maintaining the system near -273Celcius. Of course the "free energy" people need to do even better than perfect. (1)
richo61 5 months ago
Even with that endlessly circulating current - how do you *know* its circulating? By measuring the mag field it generates - and your measurement will take away a little energy. Every time you look there will be a little less energy - because it costs energy to "look". So as long as you never look and you never turn off the refrigeration - it will keep circulating. The "free energy" people want to do more than look they want to extract useful energy - which is just nutty.
richo61 5 months ago
Has there been, even in the distant past, significant increases in energy efficiency as a result of R&D into perpetual machines? It seems to me that increases in efficiency, taken to it's logical conclusion, would end up with a machine that once endowed with energy would run forever, but do no work. So even if a perpetual motion machine doesn't work, couldn't they discover increases in efficiency thereby requiring less fuel? Obviously, the low hanging fruit has been discovered already.
christo930 5 months ago
@christo930 "Has there been, even in the distant past, significant increases in energy efficiency as a result of R&D into perpetual machines?"
No, probably not. The big leaps in energy efficiency has been increasing pressures and/or temperatures to make friction losses relatively smaller. "Research" into PMs is usually focused on some flawed understanding of some basic principle, not on reduction of friction.
FredricF 5 months ago
@FredricF I am talking about the distant past where they might have increased efficiency. I have heard of a number of ancient perpetual machines that were able to operate for much longer periods of time than the modern junk science of magnets.
christo930 5 months ago
@christo930 ; Many hobbyists face built extremely low-energy devices. There was Cook's Clock "Perpetual Motion" which ran off of the energy in barometric pressure (using a large volume of mercury). Better bearings may have been invented in the attempt to build perpetual motion devices; I have no idea.

Mistake seems to be not getting that the 'bouncing magnet' will only go to previous high level if given a push from the rotating magnets. The best he could hope for is near equilibrium. Gravity is just acting as a spring.
However he could spend years never quite figuring it out before adding more springs, solenoids & rechargeable batteries to baffle himself even more.

the "driver" magnet is also pointed in a bad direction; such a position opposes the forward motion - not that you can eventually get it to run forever on its own

EartherZero 5 months ago
@EartherZero Seriously. The whole idea that free power generators could possibly work without duct tape is nuts!
NotSoOldHippy 5 months ago
Friction, gravity, etc. In deep space, it might perform differently. IF this theory could be suspended in a magnetic field, floating, it might be different. But it would take SO much energy just to suspend the rotor, I doubt it would ever power itself without a nuclear reactor to supplement the whole thing.

Even an engineer as well grounded as I K Brunel was fascinated by perpetual motion and spent a good deal of time and money on it. He tried to use a temperature differential rather than magnets but it amounted to the same thing.
