Lol... When I went to disney world, a guy from japan who was VERY japanesesat next to me on a ride. Now, I'm blond and pale as the snow, and I guess he liked that. So he was stalkin me for the rest of the day O.O
When I went to work in Japan in 2009 I ended up staying in a hostel in Tokyo for a while. One of the biggest misconceptions I came across with the tourists that came through was "Where are all the flash racing cars like in Fast and Furious - Tokyo Drift", They thought that at least every second car they saw would be flash and speedy.
Lot's a Japanese people in Japan who misrepresent Japanese people, who use the ignorants and stereotype of Japanese people, to humour foreigners or manipulate them.
Sadly, there are tons of ignorant foreigners who make us all look bad. No wonder they have developed such a bad image of us. But yeah. Pretty much everything that they associate with westerns is true. Just be yourself, and show that you care about Japan, and it's people. Make them see that you're not just another foreigner, but rather someone, who has chosen to stick with Japan's culture, because you see yourself as a Japanese person :) I do ^^ And I'm proud to have chosen that path.
I felt so special when you said anime fans... because I am one :)! But I'm thinking of moving to japan not because of my anime obsession but because I've been thinking of becoming an English teacher. Ya know I want to live there too.
Hm, why always horses indeed? I'm not entirely sure how I came about this video but I found it awesome. I'm studying abroad in Japan next year and I'm very excited to hear their crazy ideas on Texan life. :) Yes, buy me food indeed... I like food. Food is my friend. I live off of ramen enough as it is now... Great videos!
I think my misconceptions about Japan come from reading manga too much. However before people start typing the words "freak" and "loser" into their keyboards, I have mastered the art of filtering my mind so that manga-like concepts don't dominate my ideas of Japan as a whole. Though I will admit I learned some things from manga like what seppuku is, the language has a lot of puns/words with more than one meaning, and that guys have Valentine's Day and girls have White Day. But i am not an otaku!
worst kind of foreigner in japan is the "know-it all gaijin". This is the sort who believes he and only he has a "special" understanding for the japanese, which apparently is unobtainable for other gaijin...
got news for you guys,....you're all gaijin, one way or the other. So if you know a little more about Jpn, help ur fellow gaijin out a bit...the smart ones, when clued in, will be able to catch on
@JapanIsDoomed As much as I roll my eyes at these "Japan is different" videos, You guys give valuable info to people going there. Mad props. I'm American, so It took more of an effort to separate myself from the barbaric stereotype that my countrymen have earned.

Bit of a biased vote since I would most likely fall into this category if I ever saved enough money to go to Japan. Damn you Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon, my gateway drug into the addicting world of Japanese comics and cartoons! XD
You left out the guys who just came here cause their jap gf dragged them here from their home countries (like me) and now they are single and loving it? lol.
My favourite type of foreigner in Japan is the type that says, "Man, I love Jackie Chan, now where the Great Wall at?" before realising they aren't in China.
Things I appreciated in this video:
Horses.
Common misconceptions about Japan by other people:
That by being foreign, you will be cool and get a Japanese girlfriend. Lame.
My misconception about Japan:
That they had Power Rangers instead of Police. Can't describe the dissapointment. It was a sad day.
I noticed one thing...people in tokyo are quiet/shy! but when i went to visit my friend in nagoya...especially on the trains are quite loud...people talk casually, the same in kansai areas, very open and funny...
@alicecaiello It's 'big city' syndrome I think. Tokyo is a mishmash of people from all over Japan - the cultural things they share that would lead to friendliness in the street are lost there. Osaka etc seems to have retained it's 'feel' that Tokyo lost when everyone from all over Japan descended on it. At least, that's my take on it.
i'm a number 5, i like numbers 1 &2, make fun of number 3 and hit number 4 with horses daily. you also forgot to mention number 6- the missionary (usually mormon) and number 7- the JET english teacher. both come for a year or two, do what they come here for, then go back to their own country and settle down. personally i prefer number 6 to number 7, they aren't anywhere near as pretentious and difficult to talk to, especially if you're a number 5. just don't take any of their leaflets.
Have encountered every single type, and the students are my favorite one. Because I am. hell yeah. creepy sex tourists on the other hand are ridiculous. they sneak around in sleazy clubs wearing their bro shirts waiting to attack an unsuspecting naive japanese set of genitals. screw them. or rather dont.
misconception: that there are robots walking all over the place... then I went to Akihabara and there were robots walking all over the place!... jk jk anyways, nice video
what about the foreigners who give other foreigners dirty looks or whatever while walking by for no reason? I always think that they're thinking in their head "NO I'M THE SPECIAL FOREIGNER HERE IN JAPAN, GO LEAVE, NOW!" but I don't know, weeeiiiirrrdddd.
1) I have never laughed this much during any of your videos! 2) I didn't even hear the music until you mention it because you are in fact very loud. 3) I'm going to dear Sophia uni in t-1month! P.S. Neither of the former two comments were meant to offend. If you are offended please just stop rea-
Dude, first time I have had the pleasure of checking out any of your videos. You are hilarious man, thanks for posting... going to subscribe on your channel and watch more of your other stuff now. By the way, I am a new J-Vlogger so have a look at my channel if you have time =)
i don't really fit into any of these groups but i enjoyed the video ^-^
i think that people who work here could be split into several groups too...people who come to japan for no real reason (escape, random passing interest, seems like a good idea), partiers, guys who want japanese wives/girlfriends/flings (it's a stereotype, but there are a lot of them), people with a real interest in the culture/teaching...oh and JETs...xD;
Well, no, not really. In a lot of ways, you were spot on. You can add one to the list: "I'm the only foreigner in Japan that really understands the Japanese" Foreigner.
I would add to the list, Cultural Tourists. Those that are there for some Japanese martial or esthetic art, that they hope to learn. For me, I would be one of the Religious Tourists. Every year thousands of my fellow SGI Nichiren Buddhists, go for religious training. When we were still attached to the Temples, we would go on Tozan to TaiSekiji at the foot of Fuji. I never got to go to the Head Temple, but I will go for a trip to the SGI headquarters in Shinjuku and Soka University.
My media teacher worked in japan for around 2 years and the first time he went there he was asked to have a picture taken with some Japanese guy. Also on Halloween his friend dressed up as a mayonnaise bottle (lol?)
Hopefully i will go to japan next year to make a documentary for my media lesson as well ;)
The misconceptions video seems like a good idea. :D
I was in Nikko, Tochigi for a couple weeks and then Tokyo for a few days this past summer on a homestay program.
I was really surprised at how the teenagers aren't that huge into cutesy fashion and makeup like you see in a lot of magazines that are popular with foreigners.
In fact, I bought a makeup/circle lens magazine and all my Japanese friends asked me if I had been embarrassed to buy it in public.
@tamarasgoingtoeatyou If you went to Shibuya, Shinjuku or Harajuku while in Tokyo, you should have been able to see all the cutesey fashion your heart desires.
Now that the smartass comment is done, hilarious video as always!
On the csp (creepy sex tourist), I've heard girls mention them every now and then, but I have never ever actually encountered one myself. At best, I've talked to men who are in Japan for other reasons (business usually), but can't stop rambling about Japanese women and sex. But one where the single important goal was: go on plane -> exist in Japan -> have sex, has still alluded me to the point where I thought they were a myth.
@TokyoZeplin As I mentioned in the video, I met a real life one who was taking his 14-15(ish) girlfriend everywhere. He was about 26. It was honestly one of the worst things I've ever seen.
@JapanIsDoomed Surely if he actually had a girlfriend (and I certainly hope not 14, since even for Japan, that would be highly illegal ^^) he was not the worst kind there is? I mean, I imagine them as these sleazy crawlers that go after one women after the next, not "settling down" so to speak.
Fack no, hardly anyone says gaikokujin these days :s All I heard was "Gaijin" or perhaps the rare "jingai" for the Japanese that think that if they switch the sounds, you won't get they are talking about you :-/
Oh, and btw, at any given moment there are actual more "permanent" foreigners in Japan than tourists ^^
The music put me on! ROFL
