Mod, I would love to get your opinion on dowry (สินสอด). A lot of foreigners pay exorbitant dowries to their in-laws when marrying their Thai brides, but I get the feeling this is mostly the case with ladies from poor families, most of them presumably from the Isaan region of Thailand. It seems to me many of these marriages end in divorce shortly after the wedding when the farang realizes he's been taken advantage of. What's your opinion? Is it reasonable to expect to pay a dowry?
@bozotheda Dowry payments are a long tradition in Thai and other cultures. This is now slowly changing and in some families the dowry payment is only part of the wedding ceremony and often the monies are returned back to the couple. In each case this is naturally a discussion between the family and the couple i.e. whether a dowry payment is needed, and if it is, how the situation is handled.
@bozotheda In case the family insists on the dowry payment, everyone needs to make their own assessment about the situation and circumstances related to the marriage. Unfortunately there is no simple yes/no type answer I can offer, but you need to use common sense and listen to your heart to see if all the elements around you are supporting what you want to achieve.
@LearnThaiwithMod Thanks so much for your input, I do appreciate it. I realize this varies from case to case, but nice to know your opinion. In my view, for a man to pay sin soht is a bit like paying for love. Also, it seems a different "price list" applies to westerners vs. Thai men. Anyway, sorry to hijack the comment section. Keep up the good work and I'll keep following it.
@Basilisk1989
There's is a single New Year celebration in Thailand on 13 April.
But because Thailand is a touristic country, we celebrate January 1st,too.
We call it American New Year or French New Year but not Thai New Year!!!
