Closed-core verticle axis turbines wouldn't do that. Besides, that would put the generator works on the ground where it's much more accesible. VATs like that generate more horsepower than spindly three blade turbines.
@sct1886 - "Wind farms are highly subject to lightning strikes, have high mechanical fatigue failure, are limited in size by hub stress, do not function well, if at all, under conditions of heavy rain, icing conditions or very cold climates, and are noisy and cannot be insulated for sound reduction due to their size and subsequent loss of wind velocity and power."
@oracle2world What makes you an expert on this subject matter? Ever climbed one or serviced it. Noisy, how noisy? The ones I serviced were very quiet. Mine operated quite well at -22 below zero. Our park availability averaged 99.7%. What the hell would I know?
@sct1886 - The info was in quote marks, it is from an article on the internet that sounded very authoritative. The bottom line? Wind is intermittant, and electricity cannot be efficiently stored (or stored at all in large quantities). Hydro, nuclear, coal, oil, and gas are 24 x 7. Now if folks want to lower their standard of living, live in mud huts freezing and starving, and watching their children die before age 5, have at it.
You gotta lose something to get something. I rather lose a bird then lose a person getting cancer type of disease cause by polluted environment. When we cut trees to make something no one says a word. Trees has life too like us. Why worry about birds? Some people just worry about small stupid things. I don't understand who fund those university graduate freaks. No wonder we are in recession. Just install a Ultra sonic or bird can hear instrument on those blade. It might help to scare away birds.
@Mandalay Wind: So you're saying that 29% of all cats in the US die every year from cars. Wow, sounds like entire population will be wiped out in about 4 years. Do some research before you publish idiotic numbers.
Please do not forget "survival of the fittest"; wherein, you will adapt or die as the way of life. I love the wind power around where I live. Oregon just passed a law that wind turbines here can kill eagles and raptors, to clarify the law. Wind power is a beautiful power. Please see my videos about the ones here. I do have sympathy for the idiots there, who built them right in an eagle birthing place or whatever. At least, they do studies these days on what birds could be effected.
@Sedryn If you happen to study wind turbines, you`ll get to know how much tons of carbon dioxide are prevented from being released to the atmosphere when you use wind energy. Burrowing Owls and Golden Eagles are endangered species, and this video shows that measures have been taken to reduce avian mortality.
People need energy as well as they need to breath, you should thank for these people for building such a wind farm, generates power and keeps the air clean.
Wind Turbines are an answer for the short term. Yes they will kill some wildlife, but less than a lot of other forms of energy. GROW UP FOR FUCKS SAKE
@MackridgeMountain how much oil and coal do you think is burned by steel factories and trucks delivering the tons of steel needed to build one turbine? Hint: A lot.
Birds have been a major success in terms of evolution. Wind turbines will not wipe these birds out. More birds are killed by family pets, pollution, and skyscrapers than windmills, yet the birds survive.
Wind Turbines are NOT GREEN. They are Blinking Robots that destroy the beautiful natural landscape, kill birds, and take away ground water for all their foundations. They must be STOPPED!
The idea that turbine birds kills are collateral damage for "human progress" is a callous, robotic attitude. A lot of technophiles automatically praise wind turbines and trivialize their looming impact on nature.
Any species that continually kills off others for its own survival is functioning as a parasite. That's exactly how modern Man is operating in the full context of life on Earth. Deliberately in some cases and passively in others; those who just consume energy from any source offered.
Looks like there are problems with all forms of energy, But if I was a Fox I would be happy, :) I would sleep beneath the wind turbines all day then wake up and eat. lol
7.2 million cats in the UK is killing a serious amount of birds. Perhaps there is something out there that is able to scare of the birds before they strike?
it all comes down to sacrifices. Sacrifice a few birds for some energy. What really needs to happens is california needs to sink into the ocean. Way too many people live there and way too much energy is consumed. My state, for example prduces a lot of electricity that goes strait to LA. What the fuck? We make it, we should use it.
I realise that birds die in many ways stemming from humans (buildings, cars, plastic bags, pop can holders) but at least the effort to reduce dependencies on fossile fuels should, in theory, be saving all forms of life, including birds.
I just find it very irritating that the word turban was used over and over again... let the record reflect turbans are worn on heads, and turbines (pronounced like carbine, lupine, pine) are what are displayed here. Learn to pronounce the word properly!
@squibblejack The problem with nuclear power is it is pretty inefficient. Second law of thermodynamics tells us that the temperature of the hot reservoir (fission reactor) plus the cold reservoir (large body water near power plant) divided by temperature of the hot heat source (times 100). Since the danger of meltdowns, nuclear power plants must be run at a much lower temperature, hence you bang for your buck is much smaller.
@MandalayWind A) where did you get those numbers? they sound pretty inflated.... B) when you get the true statistical data, try dividing the number of animals killed by the total number population of that animal living in the United States. Multiple by 100. Do the same for the eagles killed by those wind turbines and the population of the that species of eagles in the country C) Now that i have shown how to think, its up to someone else to teach you how not to sound like an idiot on the internet
Free inexhaustible energy is real! But the powerfull Oil business won't alow common ppl to know this,Find the real deal, a free energy device at LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM ,Start the energy revolution!
my 2cents worth. A few months ago, Suncor Canada was fined $3.2m for the deaths of approximately 1200 birds in a tailing pond for TarSands Oil/Gas production. In the past year, more birds have been killed by the various IWTs near Wolfe Island. I'm having trouble rationalizing that. Everything we build kills wildlife. Unfortunately, around the Great Lakes, the windiest areas are some of the shorelines... which happens to be where the birds are.... mitigations are clear and must be done.
NUMBER OF ANIMALS KILLED IN THE UNITED STATES BY CARS ANNUALLY: * 41 million squirrels * 26 million cats * 22 million rats * 19 million opossums * 15 million raccoons * 6 million dogs * 350,000 deer
NOT TO MENTION INSECTS AND BIRDS.
NUMBER OF BIRDS KILLED BY DOMESTIC CATS IN THE US ANNUALLY:
1 BILLION, AND THAT IS A CONSERVATIVE NUMBER.
SORRY IF I'M BORING YOU WITH THESE NUMBERS BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE PICTURES OR VIDEO.
@MandalayWind Your numbers are pointless. Hazards are hazards. We're talking about the impact of IWTs not the impact of domesticated cats. See my post elsewhere about the Suncor fine for bird kills. P.S. What is source of this data? I've been looking for it and can't find the models/studies that provide this. (Serious question)
@MandalayWind Thats because BIG OIL owns us and wipes out any funding for science to come up with a better means of transportation than cars and trucks. Everything in this world today revolves around Big Oil and the car and truck. By the way the gas burning engine is 1890's technology, i wonder Y were still using it, heheheheheheheheheeeeee
@MandalayWind What's your point? The video shows the stupidity of environmentalists clammering for 'green' energy and then endangered birds getting killed because of it and the wind farms are shut down for months at a time.
@MandalayWind What's your point? The video shows the stupidity of environmentalists clammering for 'green' energy and then endangered birds getting killed because of it and the wind farms are shut down for months at a time.
How many cats are killed by birds? How many eagles and owls are killed by cats?
Isn't it amazing how no one who has a turbine on their land ever complains of health problems. Magic cure = the fee you get from the companies for hosting them. This is nothing but local politics of envy translating into psychosomatic whinging.
I believe that climate change will have a much more vast and detrimental effect on bird populations that a few wind turbines. It is a really hard question to answer, whether to keep the turbines or not. I believe the are better alternatives emerging.
It's the cumulative impacts that worry me. Wind farms are just adding one more impact, we aren't giving anything else up. I am in favor of solar, for now, but will there be any unintended consequences of that too?
Ok here is an idea that I think might help. Maybe you could paint large eyes on the blades. I think the birds would see the eyes and fly the other way. I have used this idea in my car for 40 years. I always have my lights on when driving, I think it helps the deer, dogs, ect keep out of my way. I have only hit one deer in my life.
@netster007z There are clips here on YouTube if you search. You'd be surprised, it's no wonder the birds can't avoid them; in the clips it hardly appears the birds are close to the blades and the blades SEEM to be moving slowly, but then . . . well, you'll see for yourself.
Actually, the whole idea of using wind power has been proven useless decades ago when Belgium and Holland invested millions in their use, only to find that they are high maintenance and low yield. Belgium ended up with the highest utility rates of any country. The amount of power produced by the wind is a drop in the bucket anyway, regardless of what new technology has to offer.
That is a huge oversight. I am a big fan of wind power but we need to be clever about where we put them. The wind farm owners should pay to help preserve these species.
@cag66 : Wind power is absurd and it does nothing but kill birds and cost the consumer millions in wasted funds. There is no way wind power can meet the enormous demand for power no matter how many windmills they put up.
@PleasureTV : You're absolutely correct. Vertical-axis turbines won't kill birds, and there is much less danger of damage in high winds because the heavy generators are on the ground, and not at the top of a giant pole. All that weight at the top makes them vulnerable to high winds. Hopefully, you don't live near one. The only question that remains is: why did they use prop windmills in the first place, and why won't they change to vertical-axis windmills now?
stealthbeastility....yep that pretty much sums up who you are...
to bad you're never spent a day in a wildlife clinic working to rehab these injured
birds! I started and ran the only wildlife clinic on the weshingtons coast, for seven years..and it's a real shame you have not one clue about what you're raving about...you have a future with the tea baggers but that's all.
You make energy with coal, environmentalists yell at you for CO2 emissions. You make energy with nuclear power plants, environmentalists yell at you for irradiated waste. You make energy with wind, environmentalists yell at you for killing bird life. You make energy with dams, environmentalists yell at you for bottle-necking freshwater from rural communities. You make energy with geothermal vents, environmentalists yell at you for dispensing methane gas.
@stealthbeast Its not as simple as that. Im a big fan of wind farms but you need to place them in areas where there aren't endangered birds and set them up in such a way to reduce deaths. Its the details that are important and companies need to do their due diligence.
@stealthbeast "You can't win with Environmentalists" - thats because the term itself is so useless. What is an environmentalist? I have a degree in Environmental Management so would consider myself environmentally aware, however because I am for nuclear power some would say I can't be an "environmentalist". Likewise for my views on wind power. Truth is terms such as "environmentalists" are only good for labelling and pidgeon-holing people...
@stealthbeast that's because "Enviromentalists" are really against energy production. It's about keeping people enslaved & powerless to a socialist government then protecting the ecology. notice that the "Enviromentalist" uses Suv's, private jets, limo's, several thousand trees worth of paper & tend to live in extravagent houses. socialism is for the people, not the socialist.
@stealthbeast , what a short-sighted and ignorant comment. We need an intact, functioning ecosystem in order to live on Earth. Humans are reproducing like rats, and no energy source can ever meet this bottomless hunger if we don't curb our birth rate. We have no right to exterminate the planet's precious biodiversity so selfishly nor will we be able to survive if we do. Everything is INTERCONNECTED. Green energy must be wildlife-safe or it's not 'green'.
@cathytai Unless you've got a method for convincing everyone to stop procreating, meeting our energy needs is the only plausible action we can pursue right now.
@stealthbeast Self control, education, contraception. There are many programs now to reduce birth rates. The Center for Biological Diversity is just one.
@stealthbeast Wherever there has been overpopulation of any species, suffering, hardship and collapse have followed. While we have thus far been able to overpopulate far beyond the carrying capacity of our planet because of, and through the use of, 'progress and technology', the associated destruction of planetary systems is now catching up with us.
@stealthbeast In other words, we are overpopulating better and worse than any species before us. The only difference between us and, say, rats, is that our overpopulation is far more serious, not self-limiting (yet) and capable of causing quite irreparable damage to our fragile biosphere & life as we know it.
@cathytai Actually, global birth rates are declining drastically. I just read a study that said that "peak population" will occur between 2040-2050. Doesn't look like we're breeding like rats anymore. As the big countries (China, India) increase their wealth, the birth rates are dropping.
@jcobaltss2005 I don't believe that. I believe there is a solution to the problem that requires far less extreme compromise that we simply haven't discovered yet.
@stealthbeast what is really nuts is look at how many vehicles on the road kill all sorts or animanls. Environmentalists don't complain about that because they don't want to have to ride a bike. Hipocrits.
@stealthbeast like the old electric fans, the wind turbines should be placed inside screens. alternatively, they could emit a sound audible to the birds to scare them off.
the same should be enforced on boat propellers to prevent them from chopping up the aquatic lives, like the manatees in Florida's ever glades.
The cost of placing such screens should be absolutely minimal. Man is smart. Let him improve on his technology.
@hotboyclarence Whats the point? For every 1 bird killed by a wind turbine a human kills 10. More birds die from running into windows in the u.s. than being killed by wind turbines. Look up the stats, people are just making something out of nothing. We have to act on this energy crisis, they are very nice looking, make very little noise, and dont kill animals! lol
@CVK92 so, just because we are even more of killers in other fields, then we should not bother do anything about it, even if it is cheap and easy? c'mon dude. lets improve life on this planet--including the animal life. after all, we were appointed the stewards of the animal by God. Some stewards are we!!!!
@hotboyclarence No no my point was, no matter what is done things are still going to die, people are still going to complain. So do the most we can, theres no point in putting up screens, we should focus more on the positives than the negatives because fact is wind is cleaner than oil and is renewable. Worry bout that after we get them going.
@stealthbeast So true mate, they've got to make some noise, or they'll just be obsolete. We can't stop them so the best way is to improve the technology and minimise their discomfort. For me, personally, they are just haters..
@stealthbeast You can "win" with the extremists by not making any energy by any means ever. Basically, go back to an age when humans didn't do anything to get more energy other than eating food that was foraged from plants. Of course this condition can't support a population in the billions, so about 90% of the human population would need to starve or freeze to death. Yay. Thankfully, most of us environmentalists aren't extremists.
@stealthbeast, it's easy to make canned comments about environmentalists, but the real issue is Man living outside the Earth's carrying capacity and wrecking the landscape in the process.
The economy couldn't exist without "the environment," and those who try to protect it are not the enemy, even if they show some hypocrisy.
Why not take offense at the insane ethic of perpetual economic growth in a finite world? The financial debt situation is just mirroring Man's physical gluttony.
@Antithropocentric Because this isn't a video about unreasonable, idiotic men following the insane ethic of perpetual economic growth in a finite world. This is a video about birds.
@stealthbeast, so says your monomaniacal mind. Spend 30 seconds considering the full picture. Wind turbines are just another cumulative insult to nature from a species that thinks it owns everything.
We wouldn't need so many turbines if a smaller population & economy was being served. 2 billion people has been cited as an optimum sustainable population. Too many people have become "useless eaters" and/or greedy Republicans who think they don't have to respect nature (morally useless).
YOU look at the full picture man. We DO own everything. We own everything. We are the supreme race of the planet. We are virally effective. We are a consequence of nature, and thus, everything we do is natural, including your childish rebellion.
Humanity will eventually be forced to reach equillibrium with the environment. Wind turbines are a desperate attempt to do that in a non-catastrophic way.
@stealthbeast I had nothing but grief from eco mentalist with large solar panel arrays and plans for a wind farm. Mainly, they are jealous because I can afford the panels & obtain revenue from the turbines. I went through hell trying to get planning approval for a farm building clad with solar panels and I won because i said "Nobody owns the Sun. It never fails to appear. No banker or oil supermajor will ever own or control the beautiful natural phenomena it is and is a natural nuclear reactor"
I feel like choking some of these people, especially that blond bitch with the blue shirt....oh how proud she is to see her efforts shutting down turbines, tearing them down and hauling them off...oh DON'T hurt the birdies...we have to stop sea-level rise, but not if it means killing some of her birdies!
These people are never satisfied. Watch goof-ball California juggle one tree-hugger wish list after another...only human extinction will make them happy.
@WiiPTV everything on this planet lives in a symbiotic relationship including us. You start un balancing this relationship and everything suffers. We as humans live very short spans compared to this planet. Just because there isnt an immediate effect doesnt mean there will not be one. By elminating species we loose a life form. As far as we know the only life we know is here, the universe is pretty empty and dead so far. So whate we do now may effect future generations 50 yrs,100,200, who knows
Bravo StarNationVideos, well said....and absolutely a 110% true. You are obviously well educated and have done your research. Solar is the way to go. Research solar cells and start covering rooftops and large buildings with them. Imagine your house roof covered in solar cells, you would be self sufficient and totally green. With the right research (no corporations allowed) they could be very efficient and look sleek and not an eyesore.
Solar cells are very expensive to make, and generate a TON of toxic chemicals. When you look at total pollution generated vs actual levels of energy output, you'll find solar energy is highly overrated. Nuclear energy, despite everyone's misplaced and somewhat ignorant trepidation of, is the way to go, until we learn to harvest fusion energy efficiently.
Also, consider how much energy it takes to create a solar cell vs its output. Solar energy is far less attractive when you take in the whole picture, and realize it's not just a matter of setting up some sunlight collectors.
We need to do a full winter shut down to continue polluting the earth in exchange for a few birds. ..Sure.
This is provably one of the most annoying videos i have seen in years. And Im pro green planet. But im against extreme sentimentalists and pro save everything on earth which is an unrealistic view of the world.
Their inconvenient thinking aint what is going to create cost effective n pollution free energy sources anytime soon.
Typical example of Liberal Unintended Consequences. All "Green Technologies" should have to be compared to safe Nuclear before they are implemented. After the horrors of the deaths in Africa because of Liberals trying to outlaw DDT, causing the death of millions of children, ANY of their claims of trying to "save" anything should be view with a "prove it" attitude. I want full Environmental Impact Statements and Fines for every dead Federally protected bird. After all, that is only "fair".
We are messing up this planet. Try taking the trash that JUST YOU and your FAMILY produce on a daily basis...keep it all in your house, and live in it for 6 Months. Then maybe we'll realize what we are doing to this planet. This is "GREEN"...I think not.
These birds are a TRAGIC loss caused by greedy business men!
Do your research, the death of birds isn't the only problem with turbines. Try looking at the health problems, dangers and binding contracts that come along with turbines.
Only liberals try to live in their own trash to "save the planet". Liberals love to murder millions through Compassion, like with DDT while talking about their "concern about the planet". Millions thrown out of work through the enforcement of Green regulations and CAFE standards. Europe enjoys crisp Alar Apples while Liberals used a Scare of Alar to outlaw it here. It never ends with Liberals till regular folks are living in the dark while people like Al Gore live in Mansions lighted by power.
O ya turbines is killing birds and all that its terrible considering how many more birds are killed by cars every day ya we should get rid of them too shouldnt we.
Wind Power, is the most costly, un-reliable, and has a 24 hr. run time of only 20%. We need a cheep surplus of energy, nuclear is that, and since Obama thinks Iran can handle nuclear why does not he think USA can. If he likes France & Europe so much go Nuclear They Have!
@darrylmueller : The real problem is that they won't use the vertical-axis wind turbines, instead of the bird-killing prop turbines. Propeller turbines are dangerous to live near and they self-destruct in stormy weather from high winds. Since they only make less than 2% of the power needed, there is no justification to suffer with their bird-killing ugliness. Solar panels produce much more power, present no hazards, and are hardly noticeable on the roofs of homes. Vote NO to wind farms!
Hmm...if you do your research, you would see that it's not JUST killing birds. It's causing health problems for PEOPLE too. You obviously don't have any personal experience with these wind generators so perhaps you should just keep quiet on the issue.
cant let it go can ya? well if ya wanna play that game.... yes i do have experience with them. i have one about a half mile from my house... i also have a personal 100 foot turbine powering my house. i havent had any health issues at all. the things are as quiet as can be. i dont really understand what your problem is. ive had my windmill for about 3 years now so please do tell me how harmful they are. with our 1 kw personal turbine weve removed over 32 tons of carbon from the atmosphere
No, it's not playing a game bluepanther... I am speaking on the HUGE wind generators. Not your little one at your house. Those are great I'm sure. My WHOLE problem with these things is what happens when large CORPORATIONS (who show no responsibility nor concern for anybody else but themselves and their MONEY) try and produce this ENERGY on a larger than life level. That is where the problem is. If we were all doing this on a smaller level as you are, we wouldn't be having these problems..
Problems come with large scale production with ANYTHING.... It's the greed of large corporations that put up these monsterous machines that are destroying the earth. Not you and your small scale turbine. Sorry if you felt you were being challenged or attacked, that was not my intention.
the way i see it tho they need to work on making the smaller wind turbines a lot more accessible... maybe even do things like what some cell phone companies are doing and have a company rent your land to place a few small to medium sized wind turbines on your property.... idk could be handled a lot better than it has been. but it is always nice getting a check from the electric company each month tho.
1,300 a year OMG!! i kill about 200 crows a year while hunting...... and i dont produce energy... i build turbines went and have done repair work on turbines.. yet to see a dead bird.....
what planet am I living on???? one that is so fucked up I am ready to get off it, by the name of Earth over run by in infestation known as homosapiens!
Good grief!!! I'm a wildlife lover and all, but come on now. What do they expect? Even the greatest of solutions have drawbacks whether environmental, social, or economical. I especially liked the pathological study of the blackbird... qualified environmental biologist- "it would be complete guesswork"...ditzy intern...."but it's injuries do suggest that it could have been a turbine strike because it doesn't have a head..." Her condition suggests she may have incurred a turbine strike.:oP
Always knew college educated greenies always try to over think things. When the simplest solution is always the best, Just put a hemp oil plastic over it, just like the fans we have in the houses, to keep kids from sticking their fingers in it. Now just have to work on the noise issue. Especially in suburban neighborhoods. logically would think something in an double s shape.. & wham both problems solved!
Not in the Birds Back Yard either eh!? So Exxon gets fined $100,000 for killing a handfull of birds with oil and collissions. Similar for power companies electrocuting birds, what does the wind farm get fined for killing them? Answer: not one penny! They ought to be fined a set amount per bird just like other industries are! I love it when greenies fight themselves, more wind, no less wind, no more wind!
Gov. says we actually have fossil fuels to last another 200 years, problem is it's gotten too cheap, not enough profits and not enough control. IF we really wanted to get serious we'd go nuclear but hollywood has left too many scared and filled with false concerns.
really a link would be epic... nuclear would be helpful tho.... jus need to figure out a way to reliably shoot nuclear waste into space without the high cost of it....
LOL Yeah I think we should all stop driving because skunks, racoons, deer etc etc get killed on the roads. We should walk everywhere! Right guys? Oh yeah and let's cut out all hunting seasons because we can't kill any animals to meet any of our needs...We also gotta be vegetarians for the rest of our lives, K?
Youd really want this God-awful mess in your backyard?! Careful what you wish for. We have them sprawled across our once peaceful and beautiful scenic county, and now you cant leave you home or look out your window with out seeing one of these green monsters. Do your research, theyre not as green as the developers would lead you to believe. Dont buy into their nonsense. Its all about profit, and not about energy savings!

Law of unintended consequences. And why not tear down ALL the turbines? The energy they produce (not squat) isn't worth chopping up birds.

Birds have been a major success in terms of evolution. Wind turbines will not wipe these birds out. More birds are killed by family pets, pollution, and skyscrapers than windmills, yet the birds survive.

Multiple by 100. my 2cents worth.

Vertical Axis turbines won't kill any bird , while producting much more energy
PleasureTV 1 year ago
@PleasureTV : You're absolutely correct. Vertical-axis turbines won't kill birds, and there is much less danger of damage in high winds because the heavy generators are on the ground, and not at the top of a giant pole. All that weight at the top makes them vulnerable to high winds. Hopefully, you don't live near one. The only question that remains is: why did they use prop windmills in the first place, and why won't they change to vertical-axis windmills now?

You make energy with geothermal vents, environmentalists yell at you for dispensing methane gas.

stealthbeast 1 year ago 35
@stealthbeast Its not as simple as that. Im a big fan of wind farms but you need to place them in areas where there aren't endangered birds and set them up in such a way to reduce deaths. Its the details that are important and companies need to do their due diligence.
cag66 1 year ago
@cag66 Cag... wind turbines need to be placed where there is a lot of wind, and where there is a lot of wind, there are a lot of birds.
You can't substantially reduce deaths without substantially reducing wind farm outputs.
stealthbeast 1 year ago
@stealthbeast "You can't win with Environmentalists" - thats because the term itself is so useless. What is an environmentalist? I have a degree in Environmental Management so would consider myself environmentally aware, however because I am for nuclear power some would say I can't be an "environmentalist". Likewise for my views on wind power. Truth is terms such as "environmentalists" are only good for labelling and pidgeon-holing people...
...lets see people as people, not labels.

@stealthbeast that's because "Enviromentalists" are really against energy production. Green energy must be wildlife-safe or it's not 'green'.
cathytai 1 year ago
@cathytai Unless you've got a method for convincing everyone to stop procreating, meeting our energy needs is the only plausible action we can pursue right now.
stealthbeast 1 year ago
@stealthbeast Self control, education, contraception. There are many programs now to reduce birth rates. The Center for Biological Diversity is just one.
cathytai 1 year ago
@stealthbeast Wherever there has been overpopulation of any species, suffering, hardship and collapse have followed. While we have thus far been able to overpopulate far beyond the carrying capacity of our planet because of, and through the use of, 'progress and technology', the associated destruction of planetary systems is now catching up with us.
cathytai 1 year ago
@stealthbeast In other words, we are overpopulating better and worse than any species before us. The only difference between us and, say, rats, is that our overpopulation is far more serious, not self-limiting (yet) and capable of causing quite irreparable damage to our fragile biosphere & life as we know it.
cathytai 1 year ago
@cathytai I've never denied any of this.
stealthbeast 1 year ago
@cathytai Actually, global birth rates are declining drastically. I just read a study that said that "peak population" will occur between 2040-2050. Doesn't look like we're breeding like rats anymore. As the big countries (China, India) increase their wealth, the birth rates are dropping.

stealthbeast 1 year ago
@stealthbeast what is really nuts is look at how many vehicles on the road kill all sorts or animanls. Environmentalists don't complain about that because they don't want to have to ride a bike. Hipocrits.
jcobaltss2005 1 year ago
@stealthbeast like the old electric fans, the wind turbines should be placed inside screens. alternatively, they could emit a sound audible to the birds to scare them off.
the same should be enforced on boat propellers to prevent them from chopping up the aquatic lives, like the manatees in Florida's ever glades.
The cost of placing such screens should be absolutely minimal. Man is smart. Let him improve on his technology.
hotboyclarence 1 year ago
@hotboyclarence Whats the point? For every 1 bird killed by a wind turbine a human kills 10. More birds die from running into windows in the u.s. than being killed by wind turbines. Look up the stats, people are just making something out of nothing. We have to act on this energy crisis, they are very nice looking, make very little noise, and dont kill animals! lol
CVK92 1 year ago
@CVK92 so, just because we are even more of killers in other fields, then we should not bother do anything about it, even if it is cheap and easy? c'mon dude. lets improve life on this planet--including the animal life. after all, we were appointed the stewards of the animal by God. Some stewards are we!!!!
hotboyclarence 1 year ago
@hotboyclarence No no my point was, no matter what is done things are still going to die, people are still going to complain. So do the most we can, theres no point in putting up screens, we should focus more on the positives than the negatives because fact is wind is cleaner than oil and is renewable. Worry bout that after we get them going.
CVK92 1 year ago
@stealthbeast So true mate, they've got to make some noise, or they'll just be obsolete. We can't stop them so the best way is to improve the technology and minimise their discomfort. For me, personally, they are just haters..
MrMushedup 1 year ago
@stealthbeast You can "win" with the extremists by not making any energy by any means ever. Basically, go back to an age when humans didn't do anything to get more energy other than eating food that was foraged from plants. Of course this condition can't support a population in the billions, so about 90% of the human population would need to starve or freeze to death. Yay. Thankfully, most of us environmentalists aren't extremists.
LotsOMovies 1 year ago
@stealthbeast, it's easy to make canned comments about environmentalists, but the real issue is Man living outside the Earth's carrying capacity and wrecking the landscape in the process.
The economy couldn't exist without "the environment," and those who try to protect it are not the enemy, even if they show some hypocrisy.
Why not take offense at the insane ethic of perpetual economic growth in a finite world? The financial debt situation is just mirroring Man's physical gluttony.

stealthbeast 8 months ago
@stealthbeast, so says your monomaniacal mind. Spend 30 seconds considering the full picture. Wind turbines are just another cumulative insult to nature from a species that thinks it owns everything.
We wouldn't need so many turbines if a smaller population & economy was being served. 2 billion people has been cited as an optimum sustainable population. Too many people have become "useless eaters" and/or greedy Republicans who think they don't have to respect nature (morally useless).
Antithropocentric 7 months ago
@Antithropocentric As if Democrats are much better.
Again: We ARE nature.

With the right research (no corporations allowed) they could be very efficient and look sleek and not an eyesore.
dinglenutzz 1 year ago
Solar cells are very expensive to make, and generate a TON of toxic chemicals. When you look at total pollution generated vs actual levels of energy output, you'll find solar energy is highly overrated. Nuclear energy, despite everyone's misplaced and somewhat ignorant trepidation of, is the way to go, until we learn to harvest fusion energy efficiently.
callistopwns 1 year ago
Also, consider how much energy it takes to create a solar cell vs its output. Solar energy is far less attractive when you take in the whole picture, and realize it's not just a matter of setting up some sunlight collectors.

@darrylmueller : The real problem is that they won't use the vertical-axis wind turbines, instead of the bird-killing prop turbines. Propeller turbines are dangerous to live near and they self-destruct in stormy weather from high winds.

I'd like a link to where you got that information from.
DigiTan000 2 years ago
really a link would be epic... nuclear would be helpful tho.... jus need to figure out a way to reliably shoot nuclear waste into space without the high cost of it....

Its all about profit, and not about energy savings!

here here!
If ANY wind mill was put on our lovely countryside id rip it down.
They are evil nasty looking things that are an eye sore.
Tell me...
How "eco friendly" is it to produce one of these, the materials used, the process to make the materials used!..

And what are you going to do when all fossil fuels run out eh? You're stupid.
IdRatherBeOutRiding 2 years ago
Im not., how would you like it if all you saw in your back yard was Wind mills!
There are other solutions, the government cant be bugged to do anything about it!
Don't call me stupid! I know what im talking about!

Go in your front garden then!
IdRatherBeOutRiding 2 years ago
and yet you complain about how expensive gas and your electric bill is.
Buddyb309 2 years ago
Because the company's are greedy!
There is no need for a 35% increase in rates!
Except for fat cats to get fatter while the poor and needy are left to choose food or heat!

what's funny about this is that wind turbine accidents make up about 1% of all bird deaths.
bell0942 2 years ago
I love wind turbines but i dont think they should put them there!
