This "Money Pit" they call the C.B.C. is already funded by the taxpayers to the annual tune of $1,200,000,000,00. What a complete waste of taxpayer dollars. As for "Corporate Welfare" for private broadcasters, that's what "Social Services" is for.
Heres another way to look at the sophistry local TV broadcasters are trying to force feed us:
Dont we, the television viewing audience, deserve a cut of the $400 million that local broadcasters made last year? Without us theyd have no advertisers. We (the audience) are the one and only reason they were able to bring in hundreds of millions, yet they share not even a single nickel of that profit with us. Is this fair? Bottom line: Wheres my bailout?
"Local TV Matters" claims we already pay cable/satellite companies to watch local programming, but local broadcasting has always been delivered over the airwaves for free. The cable/satellite companies are doing local TV a favour by dramatically increasing the size of their audience, which allows local TV to charge more for advertising.
Keep in mind: We, the viewers of local TV, are the product. Local broadcasters sell us to their customers, the advertisers.
Look "zigspective", I have zero love for the Cable and Satellite companies as I know these greedy companies are also ripping me off to no end but ultimately any fee / tax is going to be passed on to the consumer and I refuse to pay anymore then what I am already being gouged. I'm fighting back this time and I'm refusing to pay "Corporate Welfare" to these "Private Broadcasters". If this tax passes, I'm going to cancel my cable and go total Black Market for my TV. By the way, where's my bailout?
Can't believe people are falling for this. Have you seen who is sponsoring this? Rogers complaining about local channels "taxing" (aka cable actually paying for the broadcasting rights) because they made 400 million dollars is pretty funny, considering Rogers alone made over 4 BILLION in profit last year. For those who care about the math, Rogers could easily pay "tv tax" for every citizen and still manage more than $3,900,000,000. Really? If they can't steal it, they want you to pay for it.
If this tax is allowed to go through, it will set a precedent for future corporate businesses in Canada. By that I mean dont rule out the newspaper industry lobbying the federal government next to tax the internet to give them Corporate Welfare also. If you think that cant happen, just look at what is happening already in Canada with T.V..
To clarify the last statement about Torrents, what I meant to imply was that these torrent downloads of your favorite shows are free and are put up for everyone to download. You see folks, there are always alternatives to putting up with ever rising Satellite and Cable fees and government Corporate Welfare Taxes.
Another good way to fight back at the C.R.T.C. and the Federal government if this "TAX" goes through is to cancel your satellite or cable subscription and download your favorite T.V. shows off the internet Torrent sites. The quality is great and it doesn't cost you anymore then what you are already paying for your internet anyway. Unfairly try to tax me C.R.T.C., I don't think so. I've had enough, I'm fighting back.
Sir, I have zero affiliation with any satellite or cable company. What I am sir is just one of many pissed off Canadians who have had it with "Corporate Welfare" and all at my expense as a taxpayer. I can barely afford T.V. as it is. E-mail the C.R.T.C. and your member of Parliment and tell them that if this "TAX" goes through, you will go "Black Market" for your television like I did. I know I certainly will go "Black Market" if this "OUTRAGEOUS TAX" goes through.
Ppl has to be extremely stupid not to c that all this "Stop the tv tax" BS is done by companies like Rogers, they don't pay shait to any local channel yet they charge ppl for watching those free channels, go to any rogers store and ask what channels do u get included in the basic pack...all the local free channels...so is it ok to pay for something that is free, BS, I recommend nowdays pp, to get High speed inet and use pages like justin tv or youtube or veoh..they still have these free channels
Imagine that, my tax dollars from a proposed tax, going to help boost the profits of private broadcasters. Insanity. I will told the C.R.T.C., that if this proposed tax goes through, I will cancel my cable subscription and I will go total "Black Market" for my television viewing with an "FTA - IKS Satellite Box" and I will never again pay another dime for Canadian programming ever in my life. I HAVE HAD IT. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. STOP THIS INSANITY NOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My contempt for the C.R.T.C. and this current federal government is growing. How dare you try to steal more money out of my pockets like this. This is supposed to be a free market economy. If these private broadcasters can't make it on their own, then it's time to do what every other free market company in Canada has to do in these hard times and that is down size your company or close the damn doors.
SEE ON CABLE BILL, CANCEL SERVICE!!! I ain't paying no more money to help out any of these greedy corporations!!!! Everyone's cable and satellite bills have been climbing and they have done absolutely nothing to improve the quality of shows whether it be national or local. Maybe if everybody just canceled their service they would be forced to improve the quality of the programming. whats next on our monthly bill a 3% RRSP contribution for the broadcasters and cable/satellite execs?
nice how we are FORCED to pay for channels that we don't want... all channels should be on a pick and choose basis only, not packages with tons of garbage channels we don't want. The cable companies have the technology to make it work, but they don't..
You already pay for local television, the broadcasters want the BDUs to negotiate the values of their signals. The broadcasters want to reregulate cable rates. So basically, if the broadcasters win, you win.
Its funny that Rogers and Bell are against this fee for carriage like we are in their best interest, but they go ahead and charge their customers the 1.5% CRTC LPIF fee on our cable and satellite bills which is something the CRTC states on their website is NOT required, nor regulated by them, because the providers should be able to absorb these contributions without passing it on to their subscribers. so call your provider to have these charges removed they are just hoping you don't for profit
Cogeco is not charging their customers at this time, but I think the cable companies should absorb the cost themselves, they make enough money as it is.
Rogers = CityTV
Shaw = GlobalTV
CTV = Bell , oh sorry, they use to own them. :P
CBC = Telus , lol
As you can see the tv and cable companies are either ripping themselves off or ripping you off.

Canadian consumers can continue to be a part of the problem by keeping the service or cancel and be a part of the solution.

Tax: a sum of money demanded by a government for its support or for specific facilities or services, levied upon incomes, property, sales, etc.
***Fee*** for carriage or negotiated value for carriage is not a tax.

I guarantee that all the compensation CTV and Global would receive from a fee for carriage will go to AMERICAN SHOWS.
Sorry CTV and Global, I ain't payin' ya so I have the "privilege" of watching shows I can already watch on CBS, Fox, ABC and The CW.

The FCC regulates not only local programming, but ALL, its in its title, and yes american content is regulated by our FCC too.
