I will gladly pay an extra 5 bucks for the un-edited original score show, but I wont buy the dvds without original music. The musical score is just as important in telling the story and setting mood as is the dialog. Does anybody know if DVDs without substitute music is available? P.s. One of the best T.V. shows ever made.
This was one of my fave episodes... out of many. And my fave show ever. Even if the last season was odd without Joel I loved the series finale, while some woman sung "time to say goodbye to my town" you could see, for the last time, each one of the characters at home at the end of the day. (I mean the ones that really counted, not that I cared about that new doctor and his wife). A perfect moving goodbye for a show that had wonderful endings for the individual episodes too.
Amazing show and ahead of its time really. This show was a great escape for a lot of us. To me, the characters were more real than a lot of people I knew. The storytelling was superb. But, at the end of each episode, for me, it was the mixture of poem, narration or acting with just the right music that, in a moment, seemed to bring everything together, teach a lesson or remind us of what's really important and reveal the true hero of the show... a little, magical place called Cecily.
This show was pure poetry. So many people tell me that it was their favorite TV show of all time. That makes me feel good, and confirms that it was the right place & the right time for me. HM, film crew member for the first 2 years of No. Exp.
Thank you for your contribution to this fine show. Have crewed indie films a wee bit myself, and know what grueling work [of which audiences are blissfully unaware] it is; the hourly-drama schedule is Grueling-Work-Squared. This was one of my favorite shows, and whatever your position on the crew, it wouldn't have happened without you. THANK YOU.
It came out when I was in high school, and going through many a rough patch in my own life. Cecily was my perfect escape. I often wished I could runa way and live THERE !! It was Beautiful.
me too, but I found that if I tried I could make the people around me a litttle like the show. I find that music and poetry can help. It also helps that I'm tall and covered in muscle, cook, can fix cars and knit, and Box. And love women, really love them
Yes, this is exactly why. The producers worked hard and many record companies gave permissions but there must have been some holdouts. I tried to watch the DVDs but the substitutions took too much away for me.
Here's my question: If the record execs/artists/whoever allowed the use of their material for the original broadcast, why would they object to its use on the DVDs? Does anyone know?
It must have been a pain in the ass to go back and strip out the old back music, then put in new tracks. It's even a little amazing that the separate source materials necessary to replace the music still exist.
@ameroux The first season DVDs have the original music, but it was too expensive to profitably sell them, so the powers that be decided to replace it all with muzak. It's a travesty and a horrible thing to do in the name of greed.
But you can download all of them. Original music and the show in all of it's glory. It's about 23 gigs. The video quality is somewhat lacking, but there are no commercials and the music is as it was intended to be.
@LKDisney Thanks for letting me know! I loved, loved, loved this show and for me, the music was always integral to the story -- that's one of the things that made the show stand out from the usual TV dreck. I'll check this out. Thanks again!
@ameroux Check out the word Legion as in the "mysterious, magical" Legionnaire's Disease that killed a bunch of people in days of yore. I told you that Washington politicians have the mad cow disease. That's the whole point of Sarah Palin parading her Down's Syndrome baby all over everywhere, even to the bloody site of her most recent wildlife kill. Neurologically challenged, that's Washington. And they let their fingers do the walking all over the nuke button.
@etbella3 I don't know what you're on about with all this political stuff, but leave me out of it. I don't know you and I don't care to hear your opinions. This is a Northern Exposure thread; take the politics somewhere else.
I cannot believe how wonderfully good this show was. i mean, it had everything. This ending is so. . . . Shakespearean, so profound and poignant. I miss this show and its cast.
My wife and I own all of the episodes and greatly enjoy watching them. We have also traveled up to Roslyn, WA. which is beautiful, though hot, in the summer. We miss the show - especially Chris, thanks for posting.
I have the entire series on DVD and I've watched them to an inch of their service lives. I must say that Marilyn does look rather pretty in that scene as Bob goes away in the bus. Rob Morrow is so Dustin Hoffmann-esque chasing the dog who took his ball.
FYI onelove1968, I believe that actress Peg Phillips (Ruth-Anne) past away back in '02.
Sadly, Ruth Ann and Walt have both passed away ... Peg Phillips died 7 November 2002, Seattle, Washington, USA (lung disease) age 84.... Moultrie Patten died 18 March 2009, Beaverton, Oregon, USA (pneumonia) age 89
not the best "Chris in the Mornings" ending, but it's nice to see one again. someone should string a "greatest hits" together and post it...! i forgot that Marilyn had a thing with the "mute guy." that was so sweet:) i also forgot how wonderful Maggie's "neurosis" was;) i don't know if she and Chris ever hooked up, but by the time "Fleishman" left i couldn't watch anymore. the writing just became atrocious, and there was no replacing him. so it went....
awesome.... but not in that one episode where the whole town expects them to, for that curse or whatever, right? Amazon is DANgerous;) glad about netflix, though *^_^*
I loved John Corbett on this show reading his poetry over the radio and of course Rob Morrow too who made the show great. This was an excellent, memorable show. I have some seasons on DVD now. Thank you for posting.

@Xiroi87 the woman singing the special version of: 'Our Town' during the final episode of Northern Exposure is Iris Dement.
