If I'm in the suburbs, conventional fire-making items will be much easier to find. Box of kitchen matches, book of matches from that over-priced restaurant I ate at, Bic lighters from the over-priced gas-station mini-mart, and so on.

Heck, it's the suburbs . . . I can walk a few yards to my neighbor's house and ask to borrow his phone to order a pizza. Survival completed.

I do question the utility of this technique, though, as if I'm ever in a place where I can get water balloons, it'll probably mean I'm in a place where I can get something that will work better for starting fires. If I'm out in the wilderness, there's not much chances I'll be carrying water balloons. I'd be carrying a dedicated fire starting device or two.

That is strange, Katrina, 3 days no food and water, Northridge Quake 7 days no utilities, Mexico 200 rescue workers killed in the city trying to help, Uganda hundreds dead because water was bad, Volcanoe eruptes Mt St Helens, City missing, Remember there is only a few people deep in the wild, So even if there is a disaster it won't be destructive because there is such a low % of people.

it's amazing, isn't it, how people conveniently forget stories about people more or less stranded in an urban/suburban area and have to do for themselves until help arrives? Then there are the city dwellers who've actually posted on boards, "I don't need to carry a flashlight 'cause I'm in the city and there are lights everywhere." Yeah, okay, but when the power grid goes down and you find yourself in the dark for a few days, don't ask to borrow MY flashlight.

As someone already correctly stated: if you're in a place that has a supply of waterballoons, you'll probably be able to find much more useful utilities than just that. Besides, the water incident in Uganda could not have been resolved with the "techniques" demonstrated in this video. And, all of these things are natural, they're something anyone would/could do in a "suburban" survival situation.

This can be done with a condom as well and I'm sure you know why a condom is useful. It's not going to be a preferred way of starting a fire but if it got to that point you could.

what? for one you dont know where he lives and some places the threat of animal attack is so high that it makes sense to carry a long knife for offense and range. two, magnification fire starting of any kind needs a pretty intense sunlight so you couldnt start one in the home unless u opened a window in direct sunlight. and three, a plain balloon is rly tiny, like penny size, and if ur hiking in a place hot enough to allow mag fire starting, u probably have water, which u pour back after.

I always carry fucking balloons when I'm out camping , I mean who doesnt. Sometimes I don't even pack anything but balloons. Red balloons, Blue balloons, and sometimes yellow ones too. Quite often I pre-fill them with water and just pack my car with them for the drive. Balloons fucking rule!
