It's true, but actually getting first place gets you a lot more stars.

Yeah, and it is actually like that in all races, but I think you get like 50 stars for coming out first :).

You should, it's only $39.99 so it's not a full priced game. Unless you want to get it with the Wii Wheel but the game plays just fine without it.
