our bio teacher has a lizard that looks like this, but eats meat and sleeps all day. he does not like to be handled, and enjoys hibernating under rocks. is this the same lizard?
@Saccillia these only hibernate when they have the wrong temps, they need small whole prey items & dusting with vit d 1 / 2 a week depending on age, mice should be fed as treats, but most old school still feed mice as main diet, insects are the way to go, but may take time to wean then over to insects after long term mice.
@MDFMONITOR well, he has been giving him some shredded meat, and feed him once ever couple of days. what sort of insects would be given? would cockroaches be good?
@MDFMONITOR what about live ones? we have an overpopulation of them continuously breeding. the only thing i'm concerned is that they would be a little too quick for the lazy guy
@Saccillia they probably would be to quick that's were you put them in the fridge to slow them down! ( before feeding gut loaded), also after eating large mice for years it may take some time to convince the mon crickets/locust are better!!
@stett99 all depends on age & how many you have, at one time i was spending something like £60.00 a month when they where young on 3 mons, but it goes down as they get older!
I have a savannah that has now lost weight (which hes supposed to -obese-) i think 2 lbs , now hes got extra skin, he is now on insects only with mice as a treat every now and then. I moved him outside to get natural sunlight, and he seems super! i take him out to his outside cage and back in in the evening. His colors were nice and bright , i havent seen those colors in a long time, sense he was a baby thats how he got his name "Sunny" from sun like colors. He is peeling here and there ?, okay?
@MDFMONITOR : thanks, i house him outside during the afternoon hours and its been hot/humid, i heard about crtain signs of dehydration in reptiles, if he needs fluids on his next check then it should be no problem with him getting some, thx, btw i was wondering - feeding him earthworms is a good weightloss food right? thats what i got him only eating to lose weight and he seems way healthier now. I give him a mouse treat once or twice a month though...
@txturtlelytiger sounds like your heading the right direction!! not sure about earthworms not tried them myself, if you inject water into the mice before feeding that will hydrate them.
cut a hole in a dead mouse belly & inject room temp water in.
@EDDAYY01 ultimatly no, he will be to big for a 70 gallon, if you have a 70 gallon right now then ya sure put him in it, let him grow in there, but when he gets older u must build or buy a custom cage that ruffly 5-6 feet long, 2-4 feet wide and ruffly 3 feet tall ...the bigger the better but a good size is 5x3x3. their easy to make, cheap and do the job quite well. :)
@TheProtoBalla as much as they'll eat upto a year old with the right temps etc/ basking spot. after that reduce the amount of days you feed as they get older, keep mice & chicks as a treat though & feed bugs & insects mainly.
Mine is just over six inches long, and just getting over impaction problems he had eaten some of own substrate, i thought i was going to lose him but he's well now eating and crapping fine, he's a good lizard too, started to train him to eat of his rock and loves to have a wonder around the living room for five minutes then back into his viv.
@MDFMONITOR Thanks! Can you tell me do recommend using UVB lights as i'm put one in this week, there seems to lots of conflicting care sheets for and against. But just to be on the safe side i will put one in as want to avoid MBD.
@fatyowls yes it can't hurt, just remember the biggest problem is the right basking spot in order for them to process their food & d3, 125f small savs & 130/140f large savs round about measured with a temp gun, good luck!!
hey dude ih vae a black throat he is about a foot long he has 150 degree basking spot and eating a hopper a day with a side of eiter (all dusted) crickets, superworms, egg, or ground turkey today he only ate the rodent but yeah how am i doing with him?
Once they hit 3foot plus it becomes harder to get more growth & less belly, just watch his belly towards the 3.5 mark, but that's a good growth for 5 months!
Oh yours are savannahs I forgot they dont get as big as Black Throats.I guess being as though BT have more length to grow they tend to grow faster sort of like burms and retics who grow from a foot to 8/9 foot in a year
What is the song?

do u have any building tips im currently in the process of making a viv great thanks! hope to see more vids!
Adam4850 2 years ago
Basically your making a box with a glass front & doors, aim somewhere near that & you won't go far wrong.
Mine are built into the loft space, so there not much help to you.

clashito 2 years ago
Keep your temps / humidity right & basking spot at right surface temp, feed small whole prey items that can be digested easily.
MDFMONITOR 2 years ago
I have an exanthematicus also, the thing is that i bought some larvas but it doesnt want to eat them, how should i do it to? thanks
clashito 2 years ago
just find something else it likes, crickets locusts etc you can't go far wrong with crickets.
