They look like Death Masks; some cultures used to make masks for the dead. More ceremonial in nature than ritualistic. Considering that in the past there were not the embalming & funerary techniques that we have today, it may have given people in grief a sense of peace. By nature, they do not seem to appear very realistic. Probably involving a superstitious desire to not have the visage of the dead imitate life.
