@Cossettar sure, and so do the pink, the orange, the grey, the yellow, the green, the thin and the fat, the tall and the small, the clever and the thumb girls....
Lionel Richie originally sang the lead in this song. But this live performance was after he left the group. Walter Orange does a very good job. This sounds and looks great.
@MrMarla123 To me, Walter was the better lead on uptempo tunes. Out of all of the guys in the group, Walter was the only music major coming out of college. Course, Lionel still had his moments on the mike - the love tunes!!!!
@MrMarla123 Yes, Lionel's version was better. He kind of crooned a little halfway into it when they originally recorded it. I also liked Lionel's vocals on most of the "Hot On The Tracks" recording, . . 'High On Sunshine', 'Fancy Dancer', and of course 'Just To Be Close to You'!
I don't know if it's widely known. But Walter Orange is the original lead singer on this particular Commodores smash. And no disrespect intended not Lionel Richie as a lot of fans, non fans might think., there's only one other original member William King on lead guitar in the band. I like the dancer., Like it or not. Showgirl's have been around since the start of "Showbusiness." L.O.L., Thanks.
@amory0115 No, I disagree! It was Lionel on this tune. But he and Walter had similar voicings depending on the pitch. Walter's was higher. On some tunes when they were live, he reached into Minnie-type registries. Whenever Lionel tried what Walter was doing here, you could hear the strain in his voice. But he still had soul, anyway. This was my fav group as a teen-ager!
This is another bad ass song. That came out around 1974 when I was employed @ the old Philadelphia Naval shipyard. And I was recently reminded by a post I saw by Zachgreen4. Is that "Back In The Day" before the record came out. Me and all men generally would say "Built Like A Brick Shit House". In talking about a gorgeous/voluptous well built female. No offence ladies, l.o.l.for the memories.
I always wondered why the Commodores replaced lionel Ritchie with a another light skinned guy! and on top of that! he's not even a Brother, what's up with that ? that's why ,can you say! where are they NOW?>>
Refused to play with his boys when they traveled to South Africa in 1989. Milan was one of a kind, I felt the same way after his death regarding the reunion.
When they reform for the tour make sure lionel keeps them Paul Mcartney moments to a minimum and ya'll funk like the Commodores do funk. Funk it up Lionel keep 3 times a Lady ,Penny Dancer etc. for your own concerts
OMG I love that clip. Cracks me up how he turns around then goes "Listen Well" in a really dejected voice. And how Foreman and Cameron just stand there.
except "slippery when wet" was released before "play that funky music". the commodores' "caught in the act" album (on which this song appeared) came out in february 1975. wild cherry's self-titled debut containing "play that funky music" was released in early 1976. more interestingly, that same wild cherry album featured a cover of "i feel sanctified", which was originally a hit for the commodores.
Wild Cherry simply borrowed the riffs and overall chord structure that were used in "Slippery When Wet" for "Play That Funky Music", which explains the similarity. Covering "I Feel Sanctified" on the same LP was, I believe, a respectable nod to the Commodores.
I've looked on Google and Ultimate-Guitar and haven't found anything. But since it was on that House episode, I think some people may start listening to it more and then tab it.
In an interview, Lionel Richie stated that Thomas McClary, the guitarist wrote this song and he played the riff as if he was playing a ukelele, squeezing his strings and playing a scratch sound in between. He said that when they recorded it, it was the funkiest riff that anyone had ever heard. Then at the end, Richie doubled the guitar line on his Tenor Sax at the top of the register. Outstanding!

tedkay----------the reunion that might have been probably ended w/Milan Williams death..
this was (like alot of '70s group) a great band..all the members wrote.
they graduated from opening for the JACKSON FIVE to SUPERSTARS !!
For the last half of the 1970s and early part of the 1980s there were few bands larger..
there live shows were on par with the BEST OF THEIR ERA!!
where are they now u ask ??
RECOGNIZED AS 1 of the BEST GROUPS EVER w/their hits STILL BEING PLAYED/SAMPLED !!
