I think its funny when people buy Really nice Cameras, thinking they are going to make awesome movies, but then they realize that IDEAS dont come in the box. End up not making any movies/short/films etc.
I hope i get an answer :) But what were all the lenses and adapters you used for this video? I saw in the discription but i dont quite understand how the nexus fits on a 72mm canon? i have the xh a1 and want the letus extreme but im not sure what i need for it all, could you help! thanks
Hi. I'm interested in purchasing these two items (XHA1 and Letus 35mm) to start shooting some shorts and maybe one day a feature. I tried watching this in 1080p and it was jumpy and never quite flowed. In 720p it flowed nicely, so I wonder if because the max this camera can manage is 1080i (interlaced not 1080p - progressive) does this mean that you will never get smooth videos at 1080p?
Having made short films with both a 5D MKII DSLR and a Canon XH series, both are perfectly workable solutions. I think the DSLR HD looks crisper but then you need a way to record better sound, zooming is more difficult, and you can tell that DSLR's ergonomics are not designed for video. However, once to add a DOF adapter to a video camera an extra layer of complexity is introduced making a DSLR somehow simpler. For run-and-gun shooting, though, the video camera probably the best bet.
Maybe this is better on an LCD TV because it looks like you applied Gaussian blur on the computer display. These days the "film look" is about sharpness. This footage looks like my old Panasonic DVX100. Do you have any raw footage posted? Good depth going on, but the coloring degraded the quality this time.
What an exciting age we live in. 4 thousand dollars will buy you the ability to make video that's comparable in quality to a feature film or a TV show. Crazy stuff.
@intriguedgorilla It's a good camera to get your point accross. Even with the best Gaffer in the world, you can still tell it's a small censor. To one extent it matters who the DP is, but I would still trade it for a 16mm machine if I was serious. Good for weddings, nice toy.
i've seen many changes of focus, is automatically? i have a eos 7d but i've to do manually and is too hard. The focus change at 0:47 is an auto function?
@LaDolceLingua I have only had a little experience shooting on a DSLR. From what I can see in good lighting conditions there is no difference in quality between the two. If you prefer the small DOF then by adding a DOF adaptor to the XH A1s will give you exactly that. In low natural lighting you would have to say a good quality DSLR like the Canon 5D mkII wins out though. In saying that I would not go on a film shoot with just a DSLR. I can see a place where using both would be beneficial though
@LaDolceLingua I shoot with a Canon 7D and a XH-A1s. I wouldn't say that one was better than the other, but they do compliment wach other quite well. The 7D has some moire/aliasing issues. It also doesn't handle fast moving action well. It is small though and easy to maneuver with. It also performs great in low light if you have the appropriate fast lens. The XH-A1 Handles fast motion better and doesn't have the same moire/aliasing, and has decent low light performance.
@LaDolceLingua A DSLR is superior in many ways... Mainly in the cost and quality of DOF. The Canon Rebel T2i goes for about $800 with one lens, when the XHA1 goes for around $3000 (Not including the cost of the DOF converter) I would much rather get laughed at while on set for having a little DSLR rather than a prosumer camcorder like the XHA1, because I know the quality of video will be much better. It also helps knowing I saved over $2000 dollars getting my camera, as opposed to theirs.
There's something about a camcorder through a 35mm adapter that I feel beats out even Canon's 5D mkII or 7D. I think it's the flat DOF that the DSLRs just don't seem to have to me. Even with their ISO's high enough so the DOF is deeper, there is just this bit of an unnatural bloom and blur to the DSLR DOF.
Not to mention the nitty and gritty bits of grain and noise that just add on to the character of the Canon XHA1S. Sure, you can add grain in post to the already crystal clear DSLRs, but it just isn't quite the same. I don't know. There's something about it.
@bestamerica this was the first time I had ever used my camera with a letus extreme, all together the rig is very heavy and i was using it handheld as i was just mucking around for my own benefit so yeah it is very shaky! these days i use a shoulder mount or a tripod depending on what i'm shooting
if you want the most versatile lens out of those two i would say go for the 50mm hands down. The 135mm is a portrait lens and was only used in this test for the close up shots of her smoking.
@Lomito yeah thats right. ebay is full of Canon FD lenses as they seemed to go a bit out of favour a few years ago so they are also relatively cheap. you need to make sure you have the Canon FD lens mount for the letus so you can attach it to the adaptor.
@pr12WingYin No as long as I have all my import settings right I don't have any problems importing video into final cut. The camera uses HDminidv. Hope that helps :)
What lens are you using with the LetusExtreme. I have this same setup and I think this look is great. This is great, super impressed with your video.
@tubetoprocker I used two different lenses here, most of it was filmed using a canon FD 50mm 1.8 and the closer up shots were filmed using a canon FD 135mm 2.5, thanks for watching
@ceciliapotenza the camera cost me about $6K when I got it about 6 months ago. you'll need to fork out about another $2K though for an adaptor if you want a shallow depth of field as the camera cannot achieve that on its own unless of course you were to zoom very close in. thanks for watching
@simmoDH oh wow! i didn't expect it to be that much. i think (at least for now) i'd be willing to spend up to $3,500 for the camera itself and up to a thousand on other equipment. thanks for the info!
