I had the privelege of seeing Mel live in Newcastle England in an intimate night club. He was unbelievably wonderful. This video brought back such happy memories to me. It only lasts 10 minutes. I wish it were 10 hours! RIP Mel.
I think that Mel and George (who died yesterday) had a wonderful partnership. You see, George was a brilliant accompanist who listened to singers and was prepared to place himself second to them whilst doing this. It is Berkeley Square by the way and not Barkley, but who cares? the music is sensational.
Has anybody got a clip of him singing "Lullabye of Birdland"? His version is the best I've ever heard--nobody else gets the rhythm quite right on that one.
Mel shows just what depth and sensitivity wallows around in an intellgent man. A great voice, a wonderful personality and a true lover of jazz. Who the hell can replace him?
I think I can. I began my career in entertainment by astounding the world with my act as a masturbating trapeze artist. Since achieving international recognition, the frustrated youthful anger evaporated from of my act, to be replaced by an autumnal richness, which has won both the praise of critics and the affection of audiences.
So very true, he is the ultimate jazz vocalist, he could sing anything and hold his own with the best jazz musicians in the world - no one will ever achieve his standard again.
Trivia: Mel did write "The Christmas Song" and a BIG hit for Nat Cole, Irving Berlin wrote "White Christmas" at one time THE biggest selling record of all time recorded by Bing Crosby. "The Christmas Waltz" a hit for Sinatra was written by Sammy Cahn.
Interesting note: All 3 guys were Jewish! And of European heritage.
I could write an essay on Mel Torme' the first time I heard him I was listening to late night radio it had to have been 3am or something.... I'm a pretty light sleeper and his Nightingale Sang in Berkely Square came on and I woke up from my sleep and just listened to it. And it was so amazingly soft and I felt I didn't need that pillow I was laying my head on he was enough for me.
Its the combination of George Shearing's piano playing and Mel Torme's improv that really makes this great!!
