  • are laser disks analog?, wow that frame by frame is reely good if i try that with dvd you see half frames and stuff because of the compression

  • or just jump forward

  • Just because the disc was so huge and the tray too, I gasped and laughed.

  • You could probably kill someone with that remote.

  • HORRY SHEET

  • i saw a handful of LDs at value village mixed in with the LPs. unfortunately the assholes individually priced them at $10 each. if they would have left them as is (i.e. priced the same as the LPs at $2) maybe I would have bought them.

  • Laserdisc: when you'll see it, you'll shit bricks

  • Imagine how much a dual layer blu-ray would hold if it were that size

  • @Randomaited an entire library of movies

  • That is possibly the wiredist thing to use as a substitude as a DVD,

    But its a FUCKING LASERDISC!

  • @magewart at one point dvds did not exist, so these were the sudstitute to VHS

  • Ahh, my dad was an early adopter of LDs. However, the only thing I remember him using it for was karaoke.

  • "THIS IS A FUCKIN LASER DISC!!!"

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is a big laser disc

  • that is one badass motherfucking laser disc.

  • LOL "brick" of a remote control

  • I think the reason for Laserdisc's "organic" look is that it's analog. Like vinyls, as opposed to digital like CDs.

  • I remember watching laserdisc movies in the 70's (it wasn't called laserdic then, I forget what it was called he says in this video). You couldn't record with it like you could with VHS (video tape) thats why it didn't take off like tape did. People wanted to be able to watch movies and record from TV as well.

  • @JefVinZed, I believe "Disco Vision" was another name for Laserdiscs.

  • THIS IS A FUCKING LASER DISK , THAT IS BADASS haha

  • I remember when they tried to make the laser disc the next big thing and i remember the video being really good but even then when i was a kid i remember thinking "i'm sure they'll make it smaller some day" so never thought about bugging my folks to make the switch. i can't belive that you had to flip them over! man how annoying

  • i lol'd at the laser disc tray coming out for the first time. jesus

  • The reason why it looks so good, James, is because it's uncompressed video. In other words, better resolution than Blu-ray :)

  • @TheTigerStrike Woah woah there, you're only half right. Uncompressed video does indeed look better in image quality, because it saves every bit of information per frame (colors etc.), BUT the resolution is basically the same as a DVD.

  • @Eval555 Well yeah. However if players had an HDMI output, then it would be :)

  • @TheTigerStrike "Resolution" is a poor choice of word in this case, Laserdisks had almost twice the tvl lines of a VHS (they had 425 tvl lines for NTSC), but that's way, way lower then the kind of resolutions blu-rays offer. Not to mention that compressed and uncompressed videos have actually nothing to do with resolutions at all : / Videos on VHS had no compression technologies yet they can hardly be called "High-res". Laserdisks had an analog output, which explains why it feels so smooth : )

  • I remember at my elementary school the teachers would use them and they're interactive.

  • I went out and bought a laserdisc player and collection after watching this video for the first time... I'm a sucker. :p

    But I love it. xD

  • i literally :O when i saw the laserdisc

  • Analog is the word you were looking for.

  • mix a laserdisc and a cd that would be like 5 movies in one at least

  • laser disks remind me of vinyl records

  • OMG JURASSIC PARK !! I HAD THAT MOVIE ON VHS AND I LITTERALY SAW IT LIKE 100 TIMES! THATS HOW MUCH I LOVED THAT MOVIE

  • "This is a normal DVD" ok, I've seen that already

"and THIS, Is a LASERDISC!" *opens tray*

    Me: *shits bricks*

O_O THATS A HUGE FUCKING DISC!

  • HAHAHAHA HOLY SHIT I HAD NEVER SEEN SUCH A MONSTROSITY EVER BEFORE IN MY LIFE!

  • KRILEN USE YOUR DISTRUCTO DISC!!!! xD sorry i had to lol

  • its like a ced kinda

  • 0:52 made this video awesome.

  • at first i thought the laser disc would be a bit larger, untill i saw James picking up one. Man they are big (never seen one in real life)

  • hey james why dont you introduce us to your wife

  • I wanna see jessica rabit's well, you know

  • that thing looks like its gunna beat me shitless

  • THIS is a FUCKING LAZERDISK

  • @opsan50 really????

  • sweet

  • Just click here 0:14

  • I've never seen one before!

  • what the fuuuuuuck! that's a huge disc!

  • @pairostrike lol! Was that a deuce bigalow reference.

  • We had a Laserdisc player that could play both sides without manual flipping. It was a Pioneer I think. I also liked that Laserdiscs had smooth fast forward and rewind. Our player had a disc on the remote where you could finely control the fast forward and rewind with it.

  • i know what he mean about the video.he's using a video camera without a whole bunch of them.it's like my videos i put on youtube but he's using a video camera.i use a digital camera that uses the video feature.my videos are gaming through.

  • the more expensive later players would do some amazing things. framebuffers were used to give the same functionality on clv discs as cav discs. automatic swapping of sides as mentioned. dolby digital and dts were commonplace. u could also scratch the crap out of laserdiscs and they'd still plar fine thanks to the much lower data density of the disc.

  • I have an LD player, and I'm IN LOVE WITH LD!!! They are FUCKIN SWEET!!!

  • what is he talking about Jessica Rabbit scene? o.e

  • holy fuking christ....:P...i literally LOLED

  • I never had even Heard of Beta Taps or CEDs before this. Were they rare or something?

Laser Discs I heard of though because of the special features being able to change from Dubs to Subs and vice versa for Anime.

Maybe they should make Mini-LaserDiscs that run like the big ones, seems smoother than DVDS/

  • that must be a fucking bitch to clean

  • My first LaserDisc Player is Pioneer too

  • Comment removed

  • @xXDaFtxZoMbIeXx Umm... It's called a VHS.

  • @SomeGuy3217 NOOOOO it is not a rectangular prism, its a square and it has stuff on all 4 sides and doesnt have tapes its like a cd but it is a square prism. dumbass

  • fuck yea.

  • E.T. probleh only has the cameo do tuh the fact it has collectors edition on the front yelling in ure face bytch

  • 0:14 that should get you past 12

  • james has to reupload this video, it keeps stopping on 12 seconds and later on again.

  • I still own LaserDiscs for karaoke!

  • There are still people that swear by LaserDisc and think DVD didn't beat it in quality.

  • Laserdisc and CED are awesome if only for their box art. I'm glad the Nerd made these videos.

  • 346,000th viewer FTW.

  • Sylvester at 1:09 looks like he's posing as a male model

  • Woah, a Laserdisc looks like the unholy child of a CD and an LP.

  • @NationalVideoWatcher Your comment made me laugh :P but indeed it looks like it

  • I guess the name "Metal Blade" was already taken huh?

  • OMFg i got laser disc too lol but more disc :D

  • When that thing opened at 0:37 I was like WTF??? So exaggeratedly HUGE! Just look at the way he holds the damn thing!

I bet you could never be able to have a collecion of LaserDiscs due to the amount of enormous space a couple of those could take...

  • Hey, turn on the automatic captions.

    They're actually accurate for once!

  • whoo shiny death frisbee

  • why does the video just top after 12 seconds?

  • Now imagin if they brought back the design and made it like a Blu-Ray. It could probably hold 4-5 times as much as a Blu-ray. The purpose? For when Blu-Rays end up like DVDs and there's a new, even higher quality format for Home Theater viewing.

  • Oh, no need to apologize for the video quality, James! It doesn't matter since the video's still great and interesting!

I liked when he discussed missing footage on dvds that laserdisks have, which is very true. For a more intense example than the 'missing cameo' described, my Urotsukidoji laserdisks are clear and are unedited with all missing footage, while the dvds (except the "perfect collection") are all edited with a large number of missing scenes.

  • bad ass!

  • HUGE

  • Wtf Is wrong with this video it stops at 12 seconds

  • @DOMIPS Maybe it's CAV upload that ran out of time LOL.

  • @DOMIPS I just bypassed it by clicking at random and went five seconds ahead, and it worked like magic. If you try it and it works, you 'tubers can TML. Z out.

  • @DOMIPS not at me :/

  • @DOMIPS Switch to 240p when that happens and when it continues on from the 12 second mark switch back to 360.Works for me.

  • @SRV1DOORS1HENDRIX1 THIS VIDEO WORKS FUCKING FINE ON 360p !

  • @SRV1DOORS1HENDRIX1 ...or just scroll 2 secs ahead on timeline

  • @SRV1DOORS1HENDRIX1 what if u cant swotch to 240p wut happens when the max qulity is 240p

  • @brocks1564 Dunno I never had that problem,What would Jesus do?Probably skip a few seconds of it.

  • @DOMIPS It didnt stop or me idk what happened

  • @DOMIPS Are you from US?

Because i just have started the video works fine right now on 13 seconds and fully loaded

But maybe it is because i have a faster connection: 54 MB/Second

  • @Keeltsies1000 No, and i have a 56 MB/sec connection but nevermind it works now i dunno how i got it to work.

  • We have a ton of those at my house!

  • Can i ask you something?Whats wrong with this video?Everytime i want to see it,it either stops at 10 seconds or it says a error occured. Please tell me WTF is going on?

  • Wow!

  • Imagine a blu-ray disk in that physical size, that would be amazing! Imagine the quality :-D

  • Good old laserdisc. STILL to this day the best way to watch the original star wars series w/o the digital bs. George loves to ruin his favorate movies it seems.

  • LaserDisc is basically full analog composite NTSC recorded more or less directly to the disc.

  • THAT THING IS HUGE!!!!!!!

  • @RockBand971 thats what she said

  • i wonder why its so huge and you still have to change it

  • @beyblader11000 Because the video is uncompressed, unlike DVD. It's also why the video quality is better.

  • @beyblader11000 I was thinking the same thing.

  • @beyblader11000 It's huge because the video digital file is not compressed like DVD (that's why it looks better), also disc tracks could had been closer to eachother but at that time they didn't knew that; you have to flip sides and change discs because Laser disc has 1 only layer per side of disc, not like DVD or Blu Ray where compressed video fits in 2 or more layers on 1 single disc.

  • Were can I buy these

  • 118 peole are idiots

  • @janekittysmith Please stop doing these, please. They're not funny anymore.

  • @KoolThing14 This one wasn't meant to be funny...

  • @janekittysmith Okay. Well even so, its becoming tiresome seeing them on EVERY fucking video, and I'd like them to die quietly.

  • I wanna collect vinyls and laserdiscs, while owning dvds and blu-rays and even vhs.

  • laser disc never saw a light a day in Canada

they where like : oh ok we don't want that shit here

  • @vadont I'm not usually a gramar nazi but "a light a day"? Jesus titty fucking christ.

  • Fucking throw that shit Dark Sector style! >:D

  • Laserdisk does what DV-Don't.

  • @ddr4taffy Hooray for SEGA references!

  • James, how can you connect all those outlets to just ONE tv? I Have 5 Consoles and I Need to know so i can switch between consoles.

  • The head of Criterion Collection talked about the challenges of DVD compression, especially in preserving grain, versus the uncompressed video of laserdisc. Words to effect of, "laserdisc was uncompressed, analog, but uncompressed." Audio, in 1985, became digital and eventually multi-channel.

  • Everytime i saw one o those discs i could not stop thinking this falling from someones hand, smashing on the floor and then the pieces on a perfect rounded shape. An by the way, one disc/side could hold how much data? Like 300 mega, 400 mega?

  • @zeprefel for the versions that didn't have the frame by frame feature, an hour of a film could be on each side.

For the CAV versions (frame by frame versions) only a half hour of film could be on a side.

  • It's just a huge cd so it is still digital

  • @sonisphere098 Laserdisc isn't digital

  • @SPkx1 Trust me it is

What do you think it's any way

  • I thought he was gonna lift the top

  • why dont they fucking put all the disc format tech together into a totally badass machine

  • If your having trouble get the video to play try 240p instead

  • whn he opened the laser disk tray i went HOLYSHIT!

  • @lylatfox4

so did i.....in fact my jaw dropped! D:

  • At 0:41 i see James's wedding ring

  • @99909absol damn, i wonder why his wife isn't around..if hes even married that is. :) i wonder what she things of AVGN. ^^

  • @Saiyuki204 He is married and she has posted on Cinemassacre.

  • I have the et DVD with Harrison ford on

  • ihave 4 laser disks but not player :(

  • @heartlessMD:

take good care of em and store them safely!

wikipedia says laserdiscs havea technical design flaw that causes some onner materials to

rot or something and it makes the laserdisc skip scenes, fucks up the audio and stuff so laserdiscs in perfect condition can be a sought-after collectors item.

  • That looks like a fucking car wheel or a wheels rim holy fuck that disc is huge

  • I own one and love it, the getting up to change sides is minor but it gives you a good reason to go to the washroom or get some more popcorn while watching a movie :)

  • i was like "pfffth i dont give a shit eith lazor discs" then i saw the disc and i took a shit while my mouth was wide open ready to eat buffalo shit vomit and piss

  • WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!THATS A HUGE ASS DISC

  • WTF! thats a fucking chrome record

  • i thought laserdisc started out in 1980s

but what is the difference between a DVD and Laserdisc???

  • @TheLetsplayerswin well he just explained it

  • how can something thats 1s and 0s not be digital? then what would make it digital? anyone?

  • @LordHines420 I think that only computerized devices run binary code. As far as I know, since all discs are read by a laser, that makes them analog.

  • @RedSandStudios CDs and DVDs use lasers too, but everything is in binary code on both.

  • @LordHines420 the audio is digital, most the time. the video is composite analog. Kind of a hybrid format.

  • when u said this is laser disk i thought it might be smaller... then the entire front of the thing pops out...

  • IT'S... A FUCKIN' LASERDISK!! : O

  • HOLY. SHIT.

  • When I had Driver's ED in 1996, we used to have to drive in "a simulator." The simulator consisted of a plastic wheel and pedals that we pushed while a laser disc played of a car going down the road. Man that was some sweet technology at the time...

  • when you opened the laser disc, my jaw dropped to the floor and I haven't been able to pick it up yet.

  • i think you can actually kill people with that shit!

  • @0mgwtfbbq21

Its like the Razor Disc from Half Life 2!

  • @0mgwtfbbq21 like a light disc from tron

  • I remember my school these big fuckers you bringin back memories of watching Mortal Kombat 1 on LD

  • The best way to watch these was on an S-Video cable back then, and I remember only filthy rich folks had widescreen TVs. Ahhh, those were the days.

  • Oh man, I remember Laserdisc. I remember watching the original Jurassic Park, Star Wars, and a whole bunch of other movies with my dad. Good times, good times. Plus, IT'S FU*KING HUGE!

  • 4:53 Go on... :D

  • I remember those from when I was in school, they used those a lot in Sex education class...

  • Wow, the ability to skip through the copyright-crap is awesome. I still dont know why the fuck we have to watch these - we already bought the damn thing! And if I really wanted torip it they sure would not stop me, would they? Pointless annoyance.

  • Too bad that those aol-garbagediscs were not around back then... would have made one hell of a frisbee.

  • hey is James married?

I see a ring on his ring finger so Im wondering now

  • I'm only 13 but i own the LD version of Roger rabit (it was my dads) and I saw the, Uh, well, you know...

  • Lol who laughed when the big mother fker came out?

  • The last laserdisc movie I saw was Aliens director's cut. A very very long time ago.

Imagine if they used bluray format on a laserdisc. They could have all six Star Wars movies on one disc with special features.

  • The Cheat's playing somethin' on Laserdisc!

    Everything's better on Laserdisc!

    Whatever happened to the Laserdisc?!

    Laserdisc! Laserdisc!

  • @MetaGrave

    Homestar Runner much?

  • @TheShadowBrigade C'mon.... you know it was coming. =P

Actually, I thought they were exagerating about the size... yeah. x.x

  • i see a ring, hoo hoo! XD congrats!

  • To me, this is what you get when you combine a VHS with a DVD.

  • I was surprised at how big that CD was! It was almost as big as a large pizza!

  • I still remember the Laser Disc, it was so awesome!!

  • With today's technology, they could probably remake the Laserdisc and make it more convenient, and then more people would have the incentive to watch that rather than DVD.

  • @DonZabu meh get a blueray player XD

  • That laser disc looks totally awesome I'd love to get one of those, it just reminds me of a big vinyl album, except for a movie. pretty cool stuff, i can't believe I'd never even heard of it before.

  • After watching this video I wanna see Jessica Rabbits....well, you know

  • Thumbs Up If You Clicked On This Becuase ET Was On The Thumbnail

  • lol. super C... yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

  • What the F? It froze at 1:46.

  • I still have a laserdisc and about 40 or 50 movies.

  • His left hand has a ring.
