i saw a handful of LDs at value village mixed in with the LPs. unfortunately the assholes individually priced them at $10 each. if they would have left them as is (i.e. priced the same as the LPs at $2) maybe I would have bought them.
I remember watching laserdisc movies in the 70's (it wasn't called laserdic then, I forget what it was called he says in this video). You couldn't record with it like you could with VHS (video tape) thats why it didn't take off like tape did. People wanted to be able to watch movies and record from TV as well.
I remember when they tried to make the laser disc the next big thing and i remember the video being really good but even then when i was a kid i remember thinking "i'm sure they'll make it smaller some day" so never thought about bugging my folks to make the switch. i can't belive that you had to flip them over! man how annoying
@TheTigerStrike Woah woah there, you're only half right. Uncompressed video does indeed look better in image quality, because it saves every bit of information per frame (colors etc.), BUT the resolution is basically the same as a DVD.
@TheTigerStrike "Resolution" is a poor choice of word in this case, Laserdisks had almost twice the tvl lines of a VHS (they had 425 tvl lines for NTSC), but that's way, way lower then the kind of resolutions blu-rays offer. Not to mention that compressed and uncompressed videos have actually nothing to do with resolutions at all : / Videos on VHS had no compression technologies yet they can hardly be called "High-res". Laserdisks had an analog output, which explains why it feels so smooth : )
We had a Laserdisc player that could play both sides without manual flipping. It was a Pioneer I think. I also liked that Laserdiscs had smooth fast forward and rewind. Our player had a disc on the remote where you could finely control the fast forward and rewind with it.
i know what he mean about the video.he's using a video camera without a whole bunch of them.it's like my videos i put on youtube but he's using a video camera.i use a digital camera that uses the video feature.my videos are gaming through.
the more expensive later players would do some amazing things. framebuffers were used to give the same functionality on clv discs as cav discs. automatic swapping of sides as mentioned. dolby digital and dts were commonplace. u could also scratch the crap out of laserdiscs and they'd still plar fine thanks to the much lower data density of the disc.
@SomeGuy3217 NOOOOO it is not a rectangular prism, its a square and it has stuff on all 4 sides and doesnt have tapes its like a cd but it is a square prism. dumbass
Now imagin if they brought back the design and made it like a Blu-Ray. It could probably hold 4-5 times as much as a Blu-ray. The purpose? For when Blu-Rays end up like DVDs and there's a new, even higher quality format for Home Theater viewing.
Oh, no need to apologize for the video quality, James! It doesn't matter since the video's still great and interesting!
I liked when he discussed missing footage on dvds that laserdisks have, which is very true. For a more intense example than the 'missing cameo' described, my Urotsukidoji laserdisks are clear and are unedited with all missing footage, while the dvds (except the "perfect collection") are all edited with a large number of missing scenes.
@DOMIPS I just bypassed it by clicking at random and went five seconds ahead, and it worked like magic. If you try it and it works, you 'tubers can TML. Z out.
Can i ask you something?Whats wrong with this video?Everytime i want to see it,it either stops at 10 seconds or it says a error occured. Please tell me WTF is going on?
Good old laserdisc. STILL to this day the best way to watch the original star wars series w/o the digital bs. George loves to ruin his favorate movies it seems.
@beyblader11000 It's huge because the video digital file is not compressed like DVD (that's why it looks better), also disc tracks could had been closer to eachother but at that time they didn't knew that; you have to flip sides and change discs because Laser disc has 1 only layer per side of disc, not like DVD or Blu Ray where compressed video fits in 2 or more layers on 1 single disc.
The head of Criterion Collection talked about the challenges of DVD compression, especially in preserving grain, versus the uncompressed video of laserdisc. Words to effect of, "laserdisc was uncompressed, analog, but uncompressed." Audio, in 1985, became digital and eventually multi-channel.
Everytime i saw one o those discs i could not stop thinking this falling from someones hand, smashing on the floor and then the pieces on a perfect rounded shape. An by the way, one disc/side could hold how much data? Like 300 mega, 400 mega?
wikipedia says laserdiscs havea technical design flaw that causes some onner materials to
rot or something and it makes the laserdisc skip scenes, fucks up the audio and stuff so laserdiscs in perfect condition can be a sought-after collectors item.
I own one and love it, the getting up to change sides is minor but it gives you a good reason to go to the washroom or get some more popcorn while watching a movie :)
i was like "pfffth i dont give a shit eith lazor discs" then i saw the disc and i took a shit while my mouth was wide open ready to eat buffalo shit vomit and piss
