i always thought NY was called The Big Apple because some people refer to The Empire State Building as the core of NYC, core like an apple. or its the way people refer to areas like Lexington as the rotten core...i really dont know...
i went there and it was really great, we saw 42nd Street,
Really miss New York and all the wonderful entertainment, good food, and the great people. Hope you enjoyed your stay there! At Christmas time I get a sad feeling knowing I won't be there to celebrate. It's a beautiful place to visit during the Christmas holiday.
Ha, interesting stuff about the buskers there, Terry. They've only just started licensing them here, after booting them off the streets for years. But most are so pathetic, in my mind, LOL!
Looks like you and Tony are having such a good time together! :) <3
They call it "The Big Apple" because back in the twenties, they referred to theaters as "apples" (can't exactly remember why), and New York City was famous for having many theaters, hence, The Big Apple.
Phil took you to a church? Who woulda thunk it? $9 a pack is legalized theft! I thought $5 here in CA was bad. So glad I quit. You know, this Dec it will be 28 years since John was shot and I still choke up at certain things. What a guy he was...
The Big Apple was first popularized as a reference to New York City by John J. Fitz Gerald in a number of New York Morning Telegraph articles in the 1920s in reference to New York horse-racing. The earliest of these was a casual reference on May 3, 1921
Various accounts have traced the "Big Apple" expression to Depression-Era sidewalk apple vendors, a Harlem night club, and a popular 1930s dance known as the "Big Apple." One fanciful version even links the name with a notorious 19th-century procures! In fact, it was the jazz musicians of the 1930s and '40s who put the phrase into more or less general circulation.
Well I went to a Rutabegie Festival. I ate Rutabegie sausage & other stuff. Watched a parade & people square dance. It was better than sittin home. I gotta get out more. Glad you have fun!! PammieKay
wow, what a fun time with Phil. $9/pack? wow. must be a ton of tax dollars rolling in on those. shouldn't be one pothole or broken fixture in a school with those cig taxes. Is the original stonewall Inn still there? what a fun trip and visit with Phil.
I love John Lennon seeing where he died would just choke me up and so would strawberry fields. Sounds like you had a good time.
Hey maybe that lady was singing Elton John because he and Lennon were good friends? Hmm either that our she just didn't know many Lennon songs. Who knows.
That was a beautiful church. Love your little joke at the end though, you are too cute
I'm pretty sure the Big Apple came from a musical term back a long time ago, they referred to it as the Big Apple as like the place to be if you were a musician
I went into that church once. I'm pretty sure it was that one... A beggar came up to me and asked for some money to buy lunch, so I took him to lunch. He seemed unhappy about it.
In the 1920's jazz musicians began calling the City "The Big Apple" to refer to New York City (especially Harlem) as the jazz capital of the world. Soon the nickname became synonymous with New York City and its cultural diversity.
That's all I got....
Never been to NY....I'm stuck down here in Texas! One day...I'll make it!!
New York has been known as the "The Big Apple" only since the 1930s. Jazz musicians -- particularly bandleader Fletcher Henderson -- made it part of their slang, but the term seems to have originated with New York sports columnist John J. FitzGerald. He reported having heard two stableboys at a race track in New Orleans talk about making it to the Big Apple, by which they meant New York.
Back in the 1920's a newspaper reporter termed "The Big Apple" and got it from jockeys from New Orleans who wanted to race on NYC tracks. Jass musicians also called NYC "The Big Apple". Then in the'70's, NYC adopted it for their tourism campaign.
Great video Zip! I can still remember where I was when I heard that John Lennon was shot! I really miss him, what a shame a very talented artist in many ways. I have never been to New York, sounds expensive! Anyway, glad you had a great time! :)
OMG that one guy in the with the violin was on America's got talent - I just saw it a couple of weeks ago as they were showing last season's show over here in the UK. See? you really did see some celebrities! LOL

Alittle trivia for the day.

they call it the big apple because some one is waiting to take a bite out of your ars. you made it to church and yet i would have burned. i didnt know he was poor. peace. gregg
I have an online friend that I talk to once a week on the phone so we have gotten pretty close over the last 8 months or so just because of those little 40 minute conversations lol anyway they live in new york and if I ever go to visit which they beg me to go visit if I ever go I am visiting the Dakota I am 26 and got into John Lennon's music just a couple of years ago but that definitely is on my mental list.
I had a GF invite me to attend Catholic services during the time I was still healing damage in my knee. All the up and down turned me agnostic pretty darn quick, too. ;)
No wonder everyone is begging for money when cigarettes cost $9 a pack. That's expensive in the States. Over here in good old Blighty it costs around the equivalent of $12! Jeez!

It has to do with Depression-Era names, such as Apple vendors, night clubs, and some dance from the 1930's.
Jazz musicians also used "Big Apple" for titles of big-hit songs, from what I've read.
There are several reasons why it's called "The Big Apple", but those are 2 I read.
