Well they arent poppunk because Dereck tends to shout rather than sing, and punk is an offshoot of the rock genre, so calling them punk rock is silly. Also california punk is called that because it started in california around the early 90's, influenced by bands such as Nirvana and Green Day. The band doesnt have to be from California, its just a name. But i suppose it is easier to call them a rock band, just dont say they're emo.

Well of course they dont shout in EVERY song, that kind of variety is what sets them apart from lesser acts, but at the same time, listening to albums like Chuck (The Bitter End) and Does This Look Infected? Cali punk bands only have to have a sound similar to Nofx, Bad Religion, Pennywise, Pulley, Millencolin, early Blink 182 (all originally from cali) and these types of bands. Combination of fast punk interlaced with melody--Unlike Hardcore, or StreetPunk for instance. They don't have to be from cali, btw.
