They're related to felines and viverrids in terms of evolution, but BEHAVIORALLY, they're close to canids.

However, hyenas are neither canines nor felines. They have their own family; the Hyaenidae. (Which, btw, are still a sort of Feliformia)

suprisingly hyena's are more closely related to moogose (which are in the cat family). They tend to be similar to wolves' b/c their ecological role is similar to wolves'. FOR ex: Their both are second top predectors in their area.

Hyenas have a much stronger bite than Lions but lions are faster, stronger, and have bigger and sharper claws/teeth. Hyenas are not dogs! Hyenas are not cats. Hyenas are hyenas. They have their own family. Just thought I would help clear up some facts.

No animals are physchotic killers, they just respond to their instincts.

Wolves dont kill eachother in territory disputes, neither does most mammals, this happend extremely rarely.

Territorial disputes are usually solved through the intimidation factor

This is because of the survival instincts imbedded in all animals.

Wolves do kill each other at times, and of course hyenas do to, but from what i have read and seen, wolf territorial fights usually get more violent...

I was only pointing out that humans are much worse when it comes to this kind of thing. I was just trying to get people to look at their own species before bashing others at things we do more of. I also thought that my comment was simple enough for people, I don't want to get too technical or people get confused.

Hyenas should be the true "Queens of Africa". Afterall, they are savage ruthless killers...capable of putting terror in lion prides and often killing lions.

The pics @ nite are awesome...showing hyenas with their glowing eyes make them look scary.

Btw this footage is from "eternal enemies" where lions and hyenas battle for the prize. Hyenas can kill lions when they are in packs and lions have the advantage 1 on 1 due to their size.

And yes, they have ONE of the strongest jaws in the animal kingdom, it is untrue that their jaw is THE strongest, other animals such as the Saltwater Crocodile, and the American Alligator, mostly aquatic reptiles, have much stronger bites than hyenas

I saw this documentary. The new Matriarch was brash and careless. She was pissing off male lions by following them and re-marking their territories with her own fluids.
