Lets not forget that we can be both traditional and gain from the global exchange. Japan did it brilliantly, you can hear two things at one time without missing one conversation for the other. My mother decries the Kofi Olimode stuff but the Zaire music of the seventies is electric but tribal, open to the world but africanist. The future is both not one or the other.
you have to see this live though i think to truly appreciate the acoustic power as the sound bounces around the atmosphere and itno your mind and soul
How complex and subtle these rhythms are. Just when you think you "got" it, it goes off on something totally unexpected. What anchors me is that regular "shush" sound, but even the clapping of the women throws me off. The rhythms of most traditional African music are so sophisticated, it makes one listen all the more closely! Still love this video; what mesmerizing music. Gorgeous! Thanks again.

Before rock 'n' roll, before jazz, hip hop, etc, from ancient times there was music in Mali - the origin and source of all these and more.
