the conductor used his voice because ther was no horn.I can imagine modern train horns would say that to idiots who try to beat the train if they could talk.
I have read that work has slowly started on the 4501. Apparently some firebox work has begun and some staybolts have been removed. No word on when the 4501 will be completed, but look for the Southern 2-8-0 630 out of the TVRM Soule Shops relatively soon.

People like her are one of the main reasons we don't see many mainline steam excursions anymore. These people are a public nuisance, and a security nightmare. As a result we all loose. Thanks random woman for crushing so many hopes and dreams. I hope your smashed penny sitting in a dusty box somewhere was worth it.
Green is nice, but she looks pretty sharp in this black with white trim and yellow numbers. Hey lady! Train coming! Taking a chance just to mash a penny?
@switchstand yah she does look good in black and I really must agree with you that women is an idiot doing that hell thats what gets us railfans in trouble with these railroads both mainline and tourist is stupidity like that I have seen alot of it they figure the train will stop for them its a wonder that conductor didnt throw that train into emergancy when he saw that women I have been on several trains that we hasd to do that to incluing a few Amtrak trains
Actually she never had anything to do with the Crescent and, being a freight locomotive, she was black until used in excursion service. She will probably be restored to her original black livery.
@wippydobo321 you do realize she never was green in regular service? She was painted green to make her look like one of Southern's famous passenger Pacifics. No shame in black. It's how she rolled when she was at work.
Does anyone know the origin of this whistle? This sounds like the same whistle 4501 carried between 1991 and 1993. Then in 1994 and 1995, she carried a different whistle and then on her last trips she carried what I've been told was a copy of a Southern Ps-4 whistle. I've always liked this whistle and of course the 4501. I hope she steams again one day, but until then I'm looking forward to Southern 630's completion. That's a locomotive I've never seen in operation.
I haven't seen Silver Steam. I have a copy of The Color Purple which has a short appearance of her and she did a TV movie once called Summer of My German Soldier. And, of course there is October Sky with O. Winston Link at the throttle. I also have a number of railfan videos dedicated to 4501.
Of course you know that 4501 is a freight locomotive, the first of her class on the Southern, and thus wore black before her reincarnation as The Green Machine.
4501 is being EVALUATED for restoration. In other words, they're having a boiler survey done to determine the scope of work that the locomotive will need to run again. The survey is being financed by private donations, and no money has been donated for the actual restoration. 5288 is on display at Grand Junction, and there are no plans to restore her any time soon.
Old 4501 will be restored. She is #3 on the list. At the time she is in pieces on the shop floor. $200K is needed to bring Old 4501 back to steam, but the Railroad is too busy with engine 630, so old 4501 will run again, just not anytime soon, and she won't run very often because she is a big engine that takes on a lot of water & coal.
630 will be done sometime next year, hopefully. I don't think that K&T 10 is in the plans. 4501 is currently torn down for evaluation, and may be restored at some point, but certainly not until after 630 is complete.
People do a lot of stupid and often cruel things. At the end of one of these trips years ago we encountered a dog, surrounded by her puppies, tied to the center of the track in East Chattanooga. Fortunately the train was moving very slowly and was able to stop in time. The police were called to investigate.
I don't think they ever will restore her. Although she is so much more beautiful, she used three times as much coal and water to do the same job as 610. I have another runby that I shot the same day. It has a 4501 and 610 doubleheader. I guess it's time to upload it.
Man what it would have been like to run a steam engine

That's because this runby was done within a few minutes of the 4501 / 610 doubleheader runby shown in the "1996 Chickamauga Doubleheader" video.

what about Kentucky Tennessee # 10 and US Army # 611
Strasburg1991 3 years ago
K&T 10 was evaluated for restoration at the same time as 630, and was found to be an even bigger basket case than 630. U.S. Army 611 is for sale.

I Think old 4501 looks better in black than in green. As of right now, TVRM needs at least 3 quarters of a million dollers to restore the locomotive.
