I would put this in the purely tactical role back up SHIT HITS THE FAN BLADE as my self has it set up on some gear. This can flex in two the utility role because of the serrations but with the NON FULL TANG BLADE (the tang goes 2 inches in to the handle) I HAVE NOT HEARD OF ANY FAILURES OF THIS BLADE!
This knife is made to do one thing, kill human animals. In this role it is perfect . As I understand it the serrations are made to grab your insides & drag them to the outside. Gross but effective.
@GreeenApplez It has a small rat tail tang. This is by no means, a utility or general purpose survival knife. The original version of this knife made available in the late 60s through the early 70s had an L6 grade steel blade and was notably tougher, but this version has a stainless blade that will not hold up under heavy use, but it's design is for fighhting and it would slice someone up proficiently enough.
best knife ive ever owned in my life, own 3 actually, friend used it in the Millitary, over the KA-BAR, which, i would also, its much more expensive, but its so worth it, much lighter than the KA-BAR, plus the double edged blade helps tons in self defense situations, its not the best to carry on ur leg (even tho it comes with a strap, making it possible) i personally carry the Gerber Guardian on my leg, as u can tell, im a gerber fan :)
This is a very well balanced fighting knife ....if you get one get the ballistic case...the vinyl one sucks. they are a 2 part knife ( handle and blade) so is it not advised to be used for throwing.
This is a very well balanced fighting knife ....if you get one get the ballistic sheeth...the vinyl one sucks. they are a 2 part knife ( handle and blade) so is it not advised to be used for throwing.
though i have never held this knife in my hand(i hope to soon) just from looking at it i do not consider it to be a survival knife. i would call it a fighting knife and thats the only reasonable thing you could use it for.
Survival because "COMBAT" was Politically incorrect for the Jane Fonda types. If you call survival staying alive in a hostile enviornment, then it is listed right. Just ask the GI's who carried one in Nam. Great Video. I collect and have many models and years of this knife. I am glad Gerber decided to start production of this knife again after about 10 years.
If by "survival" you mean out in the middle of nowhere livin off the land . . . then, no . . . However, if you mean surviving an onslaught of crack-headed terrorists, power hungry nazis, communist imbicils, or a never-ending zombie apocolypse . . . then, yes . . . it is very much a survival knife :)
To your question; no, not a survival knife like when you just go camping for the weekend and got lost. I veiw this knife as a survival knife during a WTSHTF and you need it as an additional weapon. This is just my view, I'm sure others look at it in a different light. By the way it is one of the coolest knives made. Thanks for the video
I would say no b/c it is to thin, it isen't heavy enouph. you want a sruvival to have the choping power, to bet through trees and brush. if you want a survival knife check out the BK-9. I bought mine for $80, and it is so worth every cent.
It's not a survival knife. Based on the Sykes - Fairbairn it is a fighting knife. It is designed to puncture layers of clothing and still make it through the lungs and heart in a single thrust therby reducing the blood and gore and the resultant psychological trauma to soldiers.
That is a cool knife.. however from a survival standpoint, I cant see its role in the outdoors. However I suppose you could use it to shank the people who have food, thus prolonging your survival. But I'm guessing that Gerber didnt envision it in that capacity!
*Please note: I do not endorse the shanking of individuals for gain or other reason. This was simply hypothetical!* hehe
i could see how it could be considered a survival knife because of the serrations but it looks more like a knife that would be used as hand to hand combat weapon..
@m3phisto666 throwing knifes are meant to b either blanced or the blade heavier than the handle is that knife like that cause it looks like the handle is heavier
@staticx2552 Actually you can throw pretty much any knife if you have the right technique. Yes, blade heavy knives are easier to start with but a heavy handle doesn't pose to be a problem when you are more experienced. This one does indeed have a heavy handle, but the overall shape makes it a pretty good throwing knife...
Survival as in surviving a knife fight. It's a Fighter by todays standards. I think of a survival knife as something like the bark river bravo I and II. Something you can baton wood, make shelters, etc. Maybe the term Survival has evolved with time since this knife was made.
This knife is based on the Fairbairn-Sykes, definitely not a survival knife. Manufacturers tend to call every knife a survival knife that has a saw on it. Greedy bastards.
no not survival it could be used in that roll but my father now over seas and my grandfather who was in vietnam carried it as a fighting blade greatreview tho
When I first enlisted in the Army, my father gave me three knives to take with me as a gift and this was one of them (In those days, the sheath was leather & OD green).
Although a great knife and has many uses, it's Not a survival knife. If you have survival skills, it'll help but this is a combat tactical knife and it dose this roll well.
i don't think it's much of a "survival knife", i would go with a ka-bar "large heavy bowie" knife if i was in the wilderness. i think the gerber mark II is more of a combat knife. consider this next to a Applegate-Fairbarin or Fairbairn-Sykes knife. the major dislike i have with this knife is the serrations. they may come in handy some time, but i would just prefer them not be there since it's a double-edged combat dagger, not a utility/survival knife.
I bought one of these, like 20, maybe 25 years ago. Mine is not coated. I also think the sheath is leather.
A survival knife is whatever knife you have when you find yourself in a survival situation. But I do not consider this to be a purpose built survival knife. It is purely a weapon. A survival knife should be single edged in my opinion.
i agree, this is NOT a survival knife, you cant baton with a double sided blade, this is more for thrusting really. great combat large self defense knife.
Definitely NOT a survival knife. I would classify it as Combat Dagger, of Field Operation blade. But does not have what it takes to be classified as Survival.
Amazing knife! I try to buy it for 15 years and have no luck - it's either out of stock here or i don't have the money. The next time i see it i'll take it no matter what happens :) It's not a survival knife unless you consider stabbing the enemy from behind an act of surviving :D It has not much other use then that, but still i crave for it.
the best knife in the world is the one you have with you+_+

It is a survival / Combat knife. the original mark2 handles were called "THE CATS TOUNGE" Because of their gripping abbilities.

@ALEX165ALICKI At first glance, I thought you meant the serrated blade was the "Cat's Tongue." Which would have been... nasty
