I police in a country where we are not routinely armed with firearms, so physical force is often your only option (when diplomacy has failed).

I respect your opinion... But Officers are given powers of reasonable force for a reason. Watch the video again, he tried to grapple with the male & gain control... When it was clear that wouldn't happen he resolved to punch him... If u watched the video again, he only punched him 3 times total, at different times... not excessive.

NO, because their roles and responsibilities are completely different. I respect your service to your country, mate, but unless you've been a cop you don't know what it takes to complete those duties - same for you and your service. The 3 punches were justified - he was preventing 'escape from custody'. I have over 10 years experience to back that up.

It's not about whether htey can or can't punch (because they can)... Its about when is it appropriate/justified &/or legally/morally acceptable to do so.
Look at this incident. The man tries to escape. The officer tries to grab him. Then offender turns... Due to proximity the punch is the practical & immediate response.

My honest opinion, I think he was quite surpised when the offender/suspect tried to run... By that I mean it caught him off guard. It's happened to me on the job.
I've gone to arrest someone, and everything seems to be going fine. Then suddenly they've decided they don't want to go with u, and all hell breaks lose.
Biggest prob is we (cops) don't get enough training. That cop must have a boxing background.

Yes. I am a Police Officer (we say 'Constable' instead of Officer) in New Zealand, a country south-east of Australia. I have been a frontline Cop for over 10 years. I police in a country where we are not routinely armed with firearms, so physical force is often your only option (when diplomacy has failed).
