they thought about it from a alice in chains song but the real way they got there name is according to the band they arrived at the name after one band member made a particularly inappropriate comment and another remarked "God will smack you for that one". Hence forth one would receive a "Godsmack" for bad behavior.

finally a chains fan, and yes godsmack got their name from an alice in chains song - god smack. Before godsmack was anything they did alice in chain covers in boston, sully's biggest influence was alice in chains. They're what you call a formula band off of alice in chains. he even tries to sing like him, just heavier. and their music is a little harder but very very similar.
