I miss how the mountains use to generate. I've seen some of the most epic mountains ever in the earlier versions. Sine 1.8 mountains generally appear rather bland. I think with the new 12w7a snapshot, things will get interesting again.

Well, where I spawned there was. But I guess each random spawn would be within 100 - 1000 blocks from each other. So it would be a Minecraft day's walk from any direction.

I turned around and found a very nice NPC village just over a hill. Found a diamond, gold bar, and iron pick axe in a chest in one of the houses. Saw squid swimming in shallow inland waters with no connection to any "ocean". Definitely a unique world. :)
