  • French horns!! hay!!!

  • if you really want to listen to a hard song to count then listen to shadow rituals by michael markowski. it seriously changes time signature every bar.

  • I love this piece. Just played this for Junior High All Regionals! i played Sax part. This song is stuck in my head O.o

  • This song is so easy and i play alto sax and im in middle school we had two weeks to get it done and the hardest we are playing is Baron Piquant on pointe by Donald Grantham and we have a few months to do it

ps only one other band played that (college and it took them a while to figure it out

  • Come on, a 7/8 = 4/4 Time signature isn't that hard.... 1212123 1234 .... It easy. XD

After about a week of practice, and saying it to yourself.... lol

  • I played toms!!

  • @217231jas youre retarded

  • 1:30あたりの テナーサックス少し大きい・・・?

  • John Mackey is insane. The only time signature he knows is 7/8+4/4. Our band played this 2 years ago, before I made the top band. Last year I was in it, and we played Asphalt Cocktail. It was one of my favorites!

  • Bass trombone!

  • I played tambourine for this and it ended up being sooo challenging. Great song though!

  • ive been there before at that area

  • this is a hard song and we are going to play this in my school and were in middle school!!!

  • @aquifiesta This song was commissioned for a middle school band. John Mackey's songs are always hard, idk y that middle school asked him to write for them xD they must have been crazy good lol

  • @NateTronicsGuy Hill Country Middle School Band

  • All I do to count this piece is to count the 4/4 in 1+2+3+4 and when I get to the 7/8 I count two dotted half note counts in slow 1-2. So it would 1+2+3+4, 1.+2. , 1+2+3+4 It was for me to keep track of rests this way.

  • I really like watching the conductor. He's so animated and into it. Also, it's really cool to follow the percussion and how they move (especially the timpani player, he looks cute!).

  • @cyclone534 neither is my band I wanna play it that fast now lol

  • well....i just had my first solo percussion day of this.....i play concert toms.....crap

  • I think i fell in love with the tom tom player and timpini player during the perrcusion breaks

  • Like this comment to end rain forest destruction

  • ^-^ I played this last night for an Honor Band Concert. Thorougly enjoyed it. I love John Mackey's Music, especially Redline Tango, Kingfisher Catches Fire, and Sasparilla. :) Love the 4/4 7/8 XD Clarinets!!

  • @JEWong47 O.o I think we were at the same Honor's Band then... I played the tam tam/ maracas.

  • @RainingAndOkay If Professor Hudson was the director then yes we were in the same Honor Band xD I played 1st Clarinet. Second chair. 7/8 4/4 ftw, just sayin'

  • this was really well done but the timpani and tom parts didn't really lock in like they were supposed to, so it sounded kinda slop at the percussion break. but to be fair those are both difficult parts.

  • We sight read this song in our high school band. It was pretty cool, but John Mackey's Xerxes is flawlessly AMAZING!!!

  • Currently playing this songg!

    Oboe playerr.

    Do you guys have oboe?

  • playing timphini on this song was fun but crazy.. shows how crazy percussion is

  • Tenor sax is the best!!!!!!

  • Great job i really liked it it was very good :) my school band did this yesterday at out fall concert and it was my favorite peice. i play baritone.

  • one the bands at uga is playing Turning by john Mackey in their upcoming concert....i'm gonna put it on here by the end of next week....((:

  • Were playing this in my band class right now. It's a pretty interesting piece. I like it. I play flute btw if anyone cares. lol. and I am playing first flute on this piece and I looked this up so I could make sure I was playing the flute solo right. Because the flute 1's are kind of doing an addition for it next class. and I really want it(: haha

  • best french horn part...

  • the french horn parts tend to have more plentiful fun in STATE BAND selections over state orchestra ones.

  • I played this in my New York All County.. I did play the Baritone, so it wasn't as fun as percussion, but their were some cool bass parts.. I was the base of the whole ensemble sound.. Man the percussion was so loud behind me.. I loved it.

  • omg i have so much fun playing this piece :)

  • haha we played this! :D

  • im playing this for a concert tonight :) (YEA!)

  • I play the tambourine/crotales (substituted by bells because we don't have crotales) and i LOVE it like I wouldn't give it to anyone lolsz at first I was like damn an auxillary part but i love it.

  • o man im playin the timphini on this part nd its like fuk my life its crzy hard on the solo

  • My Freshman class is playing this right now, and I play French Horn (4th) Right now, we sound like- *Gag*

  • they fall apart a few times, not completely, just little blips in the music... still prett good... better than my band! lol

  • my middle school band is playing this song......

  • I played this in festival and....They have the same problem as our band did: lack of dynamics. You guys sounded really frantic. I've learned that to play an intricate piece like this, the players need to relax, otherwise you'll sound as frantic as you did. Otherwise, good job

  • haha I played this at my 8th Grade Festival a few weeks ago!

I played the 1st trumpet part and it was pretty hard i guess.

    So,... GOOD JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Haha, My band (same as below) played this tonight, and we like did amazing (:

    I Loveeeeee this song!

  • man i absolutly love this piece, my 8th grade symphonic band is about to play this in about 2 day and i truly will have a blast playin some Mackey on that stage !!!

  • @TheOsahonforever yes. it was fun!

  • Haha this is funny because the band director who commissioned this song is the director at my school!! Mrs Floyd!

  • 1+2+3+4+1+2+3 + + I played this as an All- County Piece in New York

  • i love this peice

  • I LOOOOVEEE this song! :DDD

i remember in Junior High i was in 8th grade we played this song it sounded great :DD

    123412123123412123

  • This piece isn't hard, it's just tricky to figure out the time at first. If I had known the UT music camp was this easy, I would've gone for sure.

  • It wasn't that hard.. It's just a lot of different peices and parts to glue together. We played this. It was pretty fun I must say. I played Bass clarinet my friend and I split frst chair and it was SO much fun John Mackey is an AMAZING composer(:

  • personally, I call 7/8, 4/4 missing an eighth note. sounds less intimidating........ love the tenor sax part(because that's me)

  • Wow, sounds like a lot of people are pretty full of themselves. There is a difference between confidence and arrogance. I have never played this piece before, but I do know John Mackey "doesn't know how to write easy music." A direct quote from Mackey himself.

  • I like how these middle school kids are saying this is easy as if they can read 7/8 without missing a few notes. I'm playing this in a college band and it took us a while to get everything down.

  • a few band guys and i call this song "camel toe" or "undercock" XD

  • I'm in 7th grade & we're playing this piece for UIL. Piccolo Playa baby!<3 It's pretty easy.

  • god what a waste. this is such an excellent piece and these people playing look like robots. i mean come on have SOME personality. i hate nerds who play music and never relax or anything. i mean COME ON. my high school band is playing this for a concert next month, and it is very difficult, but it is fun. i dont get why people dont think they can have any fun with it, and i hate it when little brats say its easy to be cool. even a professional would admit its hard. its very unique and complex.

  • im first chair flute in my band, and were playing this song for our spring concert. its challenging, but not hard. if we all practiced, we could make it great. this song is lots of fun, especially the changes from 4/4 to 7/8.

  • We did this at NYS Area All State Zone 5 last November. I was second chair on bari sax, I love this piece! :D

  • wow im ikn 8th grade top band and this piece is the easiest ever

  • we are playing this right now in high school band. ITS SO HARD! it doesn't sound like it, but it actually alternates between 4/4 and 7/8 time every other measure and its REALLY hard to keep track of rythms and where you are during rest.

  • i heard a middle school play this not too long ago for a state-wide competition, and they did pretty good. but yeah, it does seem pretty hard, they must've worked for at least 6 months

  • Lulz

I just sight read the second clarinet part for the San Francisco All-City Music Festival, and I played it perfectly. We only had two rehearsals to prepare for this.

The 16 measures of rest weren't that bad when they actually gave you written solo cues.

  • I'm in 8th grade and 1st chair French Horn and Undertow is pretty hard to play! It gets easier as you learn though.

  • Comment removed

  • im 1st chair trumpet in tha 8th grade (best gurl trumpet player at my skool) an i play tha ist trumpet part to this song. were still learnin it for our festival this yr. Itz a fun song to play once you get tha hang of it!!!

  • that was sweet i play alto sax and icouldnt imagine trying to play that fast on some parts amazing drums didnt sound a thing like the original song by tool but still that sounded really really good

  • @trashtalkproductions

I played alto on this song for my school. Its really fast, and hard, but a great challange and its a lot of fun

  • Man if I had a video game, this would be the song playing in the background during the final boss fight...

The 4/4-7/8 time switching really messes with your head!

  • agreed

  • try playin xylophones and vibes omfg ur fuckin hands hurt like shit

  • the hardest part in this piece is definetly the malletswhich are all on the same piece, and timpani. maybe you guys should look at the score and see for yourselves instead of arguing about posture and shit. percussion IS the most difficult and requires the most musical skill because we dont only have to play, but we NEED to know how to distinguish notes by ear, espeically if you play timpani. and we have too look at our instruments, our sheet music AND the conductor at the same time. no cakewalk

  • Just relax. To be good at any instrument requires a great deal of skill. None are "easy." Truthfully, French horn and Bassoon are the most difficult wind instruments, and Euphonium and Saxophone are the easiest, but to be good at them still takes a lot of practice and dedication. Percussion is no more difficult than any other instrument. Its just different. Each instrument has its difficulties, but all are important. Remember, its all about the music.

  • Comment removed

  • all instruments are at the same level of playing if you're good at it.

  • Listen, band as a whole isn't easy, be it winds or percussion. It should be enjoyed by the players, not complained over...

  • Comment removed

  • Are you kidding? Wind players have more to think about than percussionists. We have to think about where our fingers are, our posture, our support, and our tone constantly.

  • So, a percussionist playing timpani doesn't have to worry about technique? Having 2-4 rests, maybe 2 whole measures if the composer is merciful, to change notes on all drums? Have the right mallets? Stay with the band because sometimes the band doesn't play the right rhythm; but that doesn't really matter as long as the band plays it wrong together as a whole.

Yeah, wind players have a lot to worry about. Sitting there in your chair, with ONE instrument. 2-3 if you play piccolo or soprano sax.

  • While I will admit that changing instruments or notes on the drums can be a pain, having the right mallets shouldn't be a problem if you're organized. Staying with the rest of the band is often a problem with everyone. Oh boo, you have to stand I feel so bad for you.

  • Standing is not the problem, it's making sure the position is correct and the height of the marimba is adjusted to the height of the player. Sure, I can be organized, but accidents always tend to happen. However, I'm lucky that I can put more mallets near me, extra pairs and stuff. Whereas if your reed is fubar'd, you have to sit out the entire performance while pretending you're playing. Unless you're really awesome and can fix your mistakes in tuning and playing with a crap reed.

  • agreed on the sax part i play alto sax and im pretty good wiht it but if u have crappy woopden reed then u have to be careful bc if it breaks the night of the concert ur screwed bc a new wooden read has to be broken in so it can play in tune...thats y i use fibracell reeds they caust a whole lot more but they last for 5 years if kept nice a wooden reed lasts me about 4 to5 months if i keep it nice

  • @Cero59725 f u

  • @ONLYUSEmeDRUM Wow dude, that was a year ago. Like holy shit let it go.

  • No, I was not kidding. Percussionists have to think about the same thing. Mallet control--support. Technique--finger placement. Where I'm standing in front of a 5-octave marimba and having to switch from high octave in treble to low octave in bass--posture. Tone--I'll refer back to the Timpani, Snare drum, Triangle (yeah, triangle), Tambourine, Mallet instruments. I could go on.

  • @jimmyv113 dude I'm a percussionist and you 100% right :)

  • and its not like were just hitting a note of something thats layed out right there in front of us in the easy chromatic style of a piano, or have like 4 possible notes, we have our entire range at once and have to be quick about it.

  • This shows how ignorant you are about the rest of the band.

  • I can't be sure but I think the percussionist playing the tom part set the concert toms up as if it were a marching quad. Am I wrong? I distinctly remember playing it earlier today and playing toms 1 and 2, 2 and 3, 3, and 4 in unison from my right to left. (you'd see it as your left to right.) In this vid, it looks like she plays it as if it was set up 4, 2, 1, 3 instead of 4, 3, 2, 1. Well, I guess if it's easier to play that way.

  • I'm playing the marimba/4 toms part this year at UTSA.

  • i played this at nemc last year! i miss playing this song..

  • This was one of the songs our high school band director showed us when we were deciding on songs to play. Sounds really cool.

  • Yall should hear the ATSSB Texas all-state band playing this... its awesome. (and it was ten times as awesome live)

  • we played this in my high school band this year! :)

  • Good, but not enough from the Trombones.

  • 7/8 to 4/4 switch is easy. Just count 1,2 1,2 1,2,3 for 7/8 and normal 4/4

  • not all musicians have that ability.. i had no problem when i did this song, but some people struggled with it.. i dont understand how it could get any sumpler than 12 12 123 - 12 12 12 12 -12 12 123 - 12 12 12 12 ...but whatever.. i happen to love this song btw only because of the 7/8

  • This song is a beast in itself. We r playing it now and the Trombone part is the awsomest, btw the 7/8 to 4/4 switch is wasy when u get the hang of it.

  • I've played Undertow (Actually, I've played a lot of John Mackey's music), and while it was a fun piece, I found it to be really easy...Maybe it's just because I play bass clarinet. Idk.

  • By the way, that day he came to our rehersal didn't he say he was going to put this on his website? Did he ever do that?

Anyone who went to LMC know?

  • Comment removed

  • good job. it sounds really heavy though. it could have been played a lot better.

  • we played this for the 9-10 District Honor Band :] I love it! Every measure switches from 4/4 time to a 7/8 meter, which actually isn't as difficult as it sounds. That's what gives the piece it's pulling and pushing movement that you would feel if caught in an undertow. At least, that's how I always imagined it.

  • I played this at all state, it was great...

  • we should have this in our next marching show... (actually, it's probably impossible to march to this... darn)

  • haha, the time sig switching might make it a LITTLE difficult!

  • You would think it is tricky, but you get locked into the 7/8 4/4 7/8 4/4 pattern. The hard part is when it goes to straight 4/4, then you have to remember to get out of the time ostinato!

  • I think you have made a conductor error. This conducting style looks very much like Prof. Jerry Junkin, Director of Bands @ UT.

  • no, this is the director of the ut symphonic band, dr. robert carnochan. If you look, this guys hair is blonde (not gray) and he is a lot bigger than junkin (who always wears a pretty slim suit). besides that, junkin was directing the all state band, not mine.

  • their styles are also quite different.

  • apologies...the distance makes it much harder to distinguish :)

  • Jerry Junkin is the director of the UT Wind Ensemble. That band played at the grand opening of our new fine arts center. As did our wind ensemble. It was something to remember:)

  • we played this at region this year

    it was amazing!

  • We're playing this in our concert band... I don't know if it's just me, but parts of this song sound just like the Halo Theme

  • My god. -takes of glasses-

  • We're playing this in concert band.

We'll be the first in Kentucky, I think.

I like it. quite a bit.

  • I played timps on this at region band, and oh my god is this not the best timpini part for a show peice?!

  • I'm playing timp now ^-^

    It's amazing.

  • yeah i thought the same thing when i found out about the perc-only part, but the xylo is so much fun to play with all the glissandos

  • Yeah basically. Doing the glisses makes you feel like a freaking rockstar, especially when done on time.

  • we're just starting to learn this song in our high school band, and i love it! of course part of the reason is because i'm in percussion lol, i'm playing the xylophone and vibraphone and it's so much fun so far

  • Ha ha, neat. I'm playing it in my high school band too, and I have the same part. Awesome. A shame that I have to miss out on the percussion-only part. Though I do get the well-heard vibe part.

  • my band was supposed to play this at midwest but it got cut from our program because we had too many songs :( I was so sad because I had the timpani part

  • aw, man! that really sucks. you had arguably the coolest part in the whole group! luckily, so far this year i've been playing amazing music in all of the groups i play(ed) in/with and none of my favorites got cut. only the ones i didn't like.

  • schweeeeeeeeet!

  • Ahhh. Cool. I love meeting people through band stuff. How did you do at jazz?

  • i got 1st again. i got 13th at state - but it beat all of the other freshman and sophmores and since i didn't once go over the autumn leaves improv, i think that was pretty good.

  • Nice job. I was 2nd at region and got 19th at state for alto. Autumn leaves was a pretty cool song, and the band was so much fun!!!

You pretty much dominate. I'm jealous. =D You should post some solo stuff on your music channel.

  • i might eventually. we'll see. i'm joining a community band and i might play diversion by heiden with them eventually. they're playing lincolnshire posy and i'll probably be playing soprano since they don't have anyone playing it, which will be cool since there are a lot of solos.

  • that was my solo last year for solo and ensemble. i got a one at state :)

  • thats awesome! it's a really cool piece. my friend david is playing it this year. i played it last year for our district s&e in 8th grade.

  • yeah, it was pretty fun.

    :)

  • Texas, I'm guessing you're from the same?

    How did your band do?

  • good. i'm from region 26. if you wanna hear our concert, go to my account jaredbmusic, i just uploaded all of the videos. the concert was so much better than any of our rehearsals. it wasn't flawless - but for the level of music it was pretty good.

  • Region 10 here. That's a pretty good thing to happen. Ours pretty much stayed at the level of the rehearsals, so it was ok. Since you were first tenor, how far did you advance?

  • i got 2nd at area, so 1 away from state. it was extremely close between me and the other guy. 4 people from the room came up afterwards and said they thought i'd get it, but i didn't :)

the guy who got 1st was a senior who'd made area for 3 or 4 times and made 2nd chair the last 2 years in a row, so i was happy for him to have finally made it. and since i'm a freshman, i have 3 more years to make it. how about you?

  • Wow... once again, I wish I would've been that good at your age. I'm a senior now. I made 1st at area last year in 4A and had to record. I made 5th at recorded auditions, so I was two away from making it. I made 1st at area again this year, so I recorded again. This time I made 3rd chair on the recorded auditions, so I made it.

Are you just amazing or did you start learning to play saxophone early? lol

  • oh, congrats man. i know another guy who made 4a state this year on bari. his name is austin.

and i started learning in 6th grade, like most people.

  • Thanks. I'm sure you'll get it next year. Are you sure that it was 4A? I don't see him on the list.

  • hmm, yeah. maybe he didn't make it. i thought he did. maybe i just remember him qualifying for recording. actually - look for patrick hill. he goes by austin, but i think thats his real name.

  • Idk, there's no patrick on the list either. Is he from your school?

  • no, he's from another high school from my region. i know him from region jazz and through my private teacher. i'll ask my teacher next time i get a chance to talk to him.

  • Awesome video. I also played tenor sax on this song last night for an All-Region band.

  • really? thats awesome! what state are you from? i just had my concert a few hours ago (this is thaatxballa btw, this is my music account)

  • we are playing this in concert band this semester!! this song is legit!

  • omg i had no idea anyone put this up!!! that was sooo much fun!!

    go flutes :)

  • THAT IS INTENSE XD

  • we are playing this for Flnt youth wind ensamble

    =]=]=]=]=]

  • cool!!!

  • Comment removed

  • John Mackey's pieces are awesome! We're playing Kingfishers Catch Fire, and it's tough, (especially while marching!) but it sounds incredible.

  • I know!!! but the switching between 4/4 and 7/8 is a bitch to play but oh so fun keeps you on your toes

  • We're playing this in our ensembles :)

  • dude. i miss playing music like THIS with a band like THIS.

  • man, my highschool band could probably pull this off pretty well. we're not as good as the lmc band was, but we're still pretty awesome. as a freshman i had no idea what to expect so a good band was a nice surprise!

  • i wish mine could. we play junior high level music and we still suck. we actuallly just got a 3 on our marching conest this past weekend.

  • awe, man. that sucks. i'm really sorry. it must be really hard since you're such a good musician. my band got a 1 and we're going to area next week, but i'm not expecting to even place in the top 10. it would be cool though. if you wanna check out our show, it's really good (but the videos on here aren't). i'll probably upload a video next week after area. it's called made in america by the mcneil marching band.

  • thanks... yeah it was hard though. but it was expected. my bands never really got anything above a 3 all my years of highschool (and i'm a senior), so i mostly just focus on region and solo&ensemble.

hey good luck at area though! who knows maybe ya'll will make it.

  • I oooohed and aaaaahed. Officially my favorite John Mackey piece. And percussion in this song equals awesomeness. I am sooo jealous. Congrats guys, awesome peice.

  • you guys were so amazing!

  • Can't wait for next year...

  • OH MY GOSH!!!!!! I was in that band! Remember me? I was third chair alto. You tried to teach me to growl. Ha ha. I really miss that band.

  • this song was fukin tite

iwas in the band above this first char tuba

  • the symphonic badn (2nd band) at the WTAMU band camp in Canyon played this!

we played in much better though :)

  • Yeah, this song is pretty awesome if your not a french horn player and dont have to play it constantly, our band director at hill country made us play it as least three times a day, its hard to keep the energy going

  • yeah, i can understand that. the frech horns actually liked their parts a lot at lmc. the alto and tenor saxophones play more than any other other instrument - which was no problem. we loved playing it. and we nailed the piece after about 3 hours of rehearsing it alone over the whole week week

  • Totally played that in first band at HSU band camp. I am officially obsessed with this song.

  • i played this at hsu band camp this past week. this is a nice piece.

  • cool. whats hsu?

  • Henderson State University. it's in Arkedelphia, Arkansas. First band performed this piece and it was amazing i loved it so much! i play timpani and this is one of my favorites of all time now!

  • oh yeah!

you were always telling us to do the percussion break.

and we never did it, haha

  • i was definitely being sarcastic... =]

but thanks! it was pretty awesome though, the whole piece i mean.

  • yeah, i could tell :)

do you remember who i was? i was the tenor player who stood around to watch you all play after your sectionals like every day.

  • hey thanks for putting this up!!

the tom part was the best (but i'm a little biased...) =]

  • no problem. i was happy too. were you the tom player?

  • haha, yeah, how'd you guess?

    =]
