Ive actually hiked up syphons draw and seen the impact site. It is at the Hoodoo's ridge where the plane hit rock outcropings. The ridge looks like a skydivers parachute in this video to the upper right. In my opinion he could of cleared the outcropping if he was 50 feet higher.... that close.
Thank you for this xlnt. simulation! ~Not at all wanting to be disrespectful nor insensitive, to the contrary, am concerned for the innocent victims! Just how does a skilled pilot fly into a well known mountain landmark in totally clear-weather even in darkness at 10:30pm? Speculation has it that this was not an accident; --perhaps morbidly distraught over marriage difficulties? -or on drugs? Hopefully the FAA will have a blinking beacon set atop the peak..!!!
What is the altitude, heading and speed on this simulation?
Safford is 090 from FFZ which would have put him clear of the mountain.. based on a GPS course line he was about 4 miles north of course..the airplane had terrain awareness..but was it on?
Interesting point of view, in that it shows the sudden terrain changes, and how easily that mountain can sneak up on you in the dark. But I'm not sure about the accuracy of the flight path (altitude, heading, speed, etc.)
