@danny5672 yep a punk rock bass player needs it cause sometimes punk bass lines get really fast, not even Flea could play one of those without a pick.
holey crap,,,THAT is Matt freeman,,,,wow wow wow,,,went to school with him and Tim, man, I have been out of the loop, just fell upon this. how fricken cool!
@TheBassManJeff - it wouldn't have nearly as much attack, which is part of what makes the solo work, so no, it wouldn't be as badass if he used his fingers.
In general, while I appreciate the schooled talent of Victor Wooten and the like, I'd MUCH rather listen to Matt Freeman play.
AND unless u wanna be a complete asshole, u SHOULD hear every style of bass playing out there, like seeking ur BASS EQUILIBRIUM. Most if ur a bassist or bass enthusiastic.
Hear Patitucci, Bromberg, Manring, Miller, Jaco, Wooten, Willis, Hellborg, Cottle... then Freeman, Claypool, Flea, Jeff Hughell... some Sheehan, Hamm LaRue, Berlin, Levin, Sakurai...
AND try to figure out bass lines in ANY song u hear, no matter about music genres (don't be a pussy and hear a little of EVERYTHING!)
IM A BASS PLAYER and private bass teacher too; Ive been studying & playing bass for the past 22 years (B.I.T. included!)
But guess wot? Sometimes I get so FREAKIN' BORED about Wooten, Miller, Patitucci, Bromberg, Hellborg...
ENTER MATT FREEMAN and its like AW GAH! Just like a cold beer on a sunny day. U gotta love his raw phrasing & thunderous sound... ALL PUNK VIRTUOSITY!
Then I can go "serious" again & pretend bass its all about skills, jazz, fusion and copping Jaco's stuff.
Your all fucking stupid forr arguing about this. I f you like Victor go watch his goddam video instead. Matt is good. End of story. Quit comparing musicians like there boxers and watch the video.
He's a good punk-bassist, but he's NOWHERE NEAR being the greatest bass-player in the world. I hope the vocalist said it just to raise the energy-level...
for some reason when i listen to this solo i can picture getting chased by the grim reaper (while hes riding two alligators ) in the buoys of Louisiana . XD yup its that great \m/
@BoKuTeN7 I don't think Sheehan's the best but he plays more complex and interesting lines at least as fast as this plus he knows almost every trick in the book.
the whole point of rancid is that thier a gritty punk band who give two shits about technique, i personally am into my thrash and death metal aswell so like all the technicl stuff like prog, intrumental rock and jazz but matt is playin in ur face insane solos for a gritty in ur face band, not pretentious progressive progressive rock group or some random funk or random jazz group
i should hope you have a higher opinion of music than this
if thats your opinion..its meaningless regardless
its a cool solo..but music is about using the notes within scales to show feelings and emotions..through dynamics, different arrangements and playing with conviction. Music is all about expression..this just sounds like a rushed scale, given little thought and yeah just not my cup of tea.
Lets set this straight I think Matt Freeman is a badass just like any of these other players like Marcus Miller or Victor Wooten is. It's all about styles Matt is a premier punk bassist and he kicks ass at what he does just like Victor does. Technique yeah Victor is way more advanced but Victor would be out of place playing with Rancid just like Matt would be out of place with Bela Fleck so quit arguing about who's better and appreciate it for what it is damn.
@kingofthestoneage5 i hear stupid things in my life but even thinking on conpare the talent that Victor Wooten has with this punk is compleately stupid, yes you need to have some practice to do what Matt does but out from that that stupit part he is playing has no soul, no feeling is just an stupid line with no talent forced to try to be something, is to forced to be good Victor Wooten is a Master, Matt is close to be a want to be...
@kingofthestoneage5 haha omg thanks you! It's like trying to compare Avril Lavigne and Metallica! They're two different genres, with different styles no way can they be compared, people need to stfu and enjoy the music! Matt Freeman is still extremely talented
I know its he is an obvious choice but he has gotta be the best bass player in punk. The guy from monster squad is sick as well but matt just takes the piss consistently
@billiam5billion Have you ever listened to the tracks he puts down? If you judge off of this clip alone maybe but listen to the discography and you will see he is #1. To the end of the eastbay is one of the sweetest bass lines ever... I don't even playt bass but I can see he is at the top.
The solo from Maxwell Murder is only the tip of the iceberg for Matt Freeman. I actually don't understand why that is what there are always posts of. What about the bass line on Warsaw or Radio.
I would have said Les Claypool WAYY before Burton. Yes, Matt is one hell of a bassist and one of the best in his genre without a doubt, as is Les in his, respectively. Burton was an icon in his time, but his demise makes it hard for him to produce any new material or to progress as the aforementioned can.
How the Fuck are the two top rated comments are Anti-Matt Freeman! One of them says that Cliff Burton is better, yeah right. Bass solo from Kill em All sucks compared to this bass solo. Fuck all the people who voted thumbs up for Cliff Burton.
The physical aspect of mastery is apparent to fools. Musical conception (note placement against individual/ensemble time, the ability to listen to/understand/respond to an entire band in real time, and a unique voice cultivated through years of listening, copying and assimilating music with the type of yearning to speak music an infant has to speak English) transcends all technique.
"The wise man points to the moon, the fool sees only a finger."
@letmeinidiots,....cheating? is it a rule not to use a pick? besides.....what sounds good is good, but honestly I think he should use a fretless, just cause he gets too much fret buzz...he writes awesome lines though
I just saying that half of what makes most bass lines impressive is that you're playing with your fingers. With a pick, it becomes more like a guitar than a bass to me.
meh it is a bass guitar a very simplified version of the double bass..it all come's down to preference with the fingers you get a nice low tone or a growl which sounds great but with a pick you get an awesome attack that brings out the highs a little more ... then there is pop and slap which is kool when done right now matt freeman kool dude awesome style but every time i hear him i always pick up an error in his tempo but we all make mistakes but it all come's down to what kind of sound u want.
thsi guy is a badass bassist but it is really based on opinion. he can play really fast but cliff burton can make the bass sound badass. metallica doesnt suck, but they only had 4 good albums. kill em all, ride the lightning, master of puppets, and ....and justice for all. they went to shit after that. im not saying this guy sucks. hes badass but i think cliff was the best. but its really based on what u like
@reaper420d Cliff was a great writer that is it. He is so overrated because he died it is pathetic. He is not even the best bassist Metallica has had when it comes to technical ability that would be Rob.
Matt Freeman is a much better bassist IMO. Burton was just original for his use of effects pedals while playing bass. nothing special. I love Metallica and honestly love everything BUT St Anger, but he was nothing special. Not even the best bassist that played in the 80's in thrash metal.
@EyesOfTheSouthSTi strickly speaking from an ability standpoint, I would have to say Victor Wooten is far superior. remember I say this based on the players overall ability, not the skill level of other players within a given genre. As for the punk style, I'd say this dude is the best in the genre he plays.
@EyesOfTheSouthSTi actually your probably right, Although I don't really listen to punk/rock. I think the reason why the general public(yourself included) would choose claypool or flea over someone like wooten is because of the genre of music they play. not a lot of people between the ages of 15 to 25 listen to funk/fusion/jazz so therefor they choose the idolize a musician within their favorite genre of music. I've learned to put style aside and focus of judging based on ability.
@EyesOfTheSouthSTi I like the Descendents and All and I respect Alvarez a lot but Freeman is in an entirely different league than him. Check out Axiom, White Knuckle Ride, Animosity or Rejected.
@EyesOfTheSouthSTi I know the comment I'm replying to is pretty old now but I think you're right. I just think Karl Alavrez is better at writing bouncy fingerstyle pop-punk basslines and Freeman is better at kinetic Hardcore/Punk Rock lines because of his picking style and speed.
@reaper420d well hold on here, black album was pretty great and load had it's moments. Why is ther arguments on metallica on a punk video anyway. Cliff was amazing. Matt is amazing. Justin bieber sucks. PERIOD
I think it's actually so sad to waste some good talent like Matt Freeman on crappy group like Rancid. I would have seen him more into Megadeth, Metallica or jamming with guyz like Satriani. Combo guitar and bass solo would be awesome.
@angusyoung321123 i think they "Had" musical talent... songs like Orion or Anesthesia Pulling Theet have a great composition level but right now they are one of the worst band ever xD
@Cannabix rancid is really good, and i really hate metallica and megadeth so i personally think he's good where is is. plus metallica has the suicidal tendencies bassist
@punx4life123 bah all I like from Rancid is their bassist, I had many friends listening to them, I really tried to like it and still, I really can't find any talent in their group besides their bassist. Still you guyz can think Rancid is "the shit" but I won't comment anymore. I still think it would have been great if he did join a group able to run on their instrument as he does.
I use both picks and fingers, depending on which band I'm playing with, what genre etc.. Not so much about the sound, I pretty much get the same sound no matter what I use, although if I want a warmer and more boomy sound, I usually use my fingers.. I have no rules really, I switch from day to day..
I think both fingers and picks are great, I don't see the point fighting over it! If it sounds good, why care about if it's played with a pick or not?
1st of all... +1 to xmplft's comment matt is sick. a pick suits the type of music he's playing. i'm willing to bet he's got good finger style technique too. i never understood the big deal over who plays how. music is ( in my opinion ) an expression of individuality. i find it small minded to talk shit about someones technique.
it really doesn't matter how you play it. if he wanted to solo with his fucking dick and it sounded that good, i wouldn't be judging him.
however you want to play is how you should play. if you like the way a pick sounds, use a pick. if you want to slap, slap. if you have a problem with this, fuck off.
@Hawolation you cleary have no idea what playing bass is about. picks are for whimps? sorry o mighty god of bass enlighten us all. you sound like a wanna be yourself. obviously i have know idea who you are, but i bet youre a greasy metal head with shoulder length hair who thinks he/she is better than everyone else because your music is \,,/HEAVIER!\,,/ OMG LUK HOW HEAVYZ MA MOOSIC TOONS ARE OMG OMG THEEZ PPLS WIV PICKZ CANZ NOT PLAY BASS COZ DEY IS WIMPS OMG HEAVYNESSES OMG
What flea freeman beats the hell out of flea fag. And who are these fags (Steve DiGiorgio and Billy Sheehan)they must suck cause ive never heard of them
this guy named alex says that Rancid isnt true punk and that theyre sell outs... we must stop this! if you have a facebook account, search "Alex Lake, Rancid Is Still Punk and They Haven't Sold Out!!" and join the group! Punks unite!
I love a jazz bass. oh, and him against claypool or wooten? whatever, they are good, but i tend to go for the 'lesser'. every passionate musician needs credit.
Matt uses a pick for the sharp attack it gives and this is the sound you want when you are playing high energy punk rock. Using fingers is awesome too of course and has its place depending on the situation, but they don't give as sharp an attack. Matt can probably play great with his fingers too I imagine as John Entwistle from the Who was his main influence when he started playing.
Stupid comments on who's better Freeman, Claypool, Or Flea. I like em all. Thanks for the video.

@reaper420d everything in music is based on what you like there are no ultamatiums in music
ILoveKimPearson 1 year ago
@reaper420d Cliff was a great writer that is it. He is so overrated because he died it is pathetic. He is not even the best bassist Metallica has had when it comes to technical ability that would be Rob.
Matt Freeman is a much better bassist IMO. Burton was just original for his use of effects pedals while playing bass. nothing special. I love Metallica and honestly love everything BUT St Anger, but he was nothing special. Not even the best bassist that played in the 80's in thrash metal.
EyesOfTheSouthSTi 1 year ago
@EyesOfTheSouthSTi strickly speaking from an ability standpoint, I would have to say Victor Wooten is far superior. remember I say this based on the players overall ability, not the skill level of other players within a given genre. As for the punk style, I'd say this dude is the best in the genre he plays.
piperpilot26 1 year ago
@piperpilot26 sorry Lombardo and Alvarez are a bit better then Freeman when it comes to punk.
I'll take Claypool and Flea over Wooten.
EyesOfTheSouthSTi 1 year ago
@EyesOfTheSouthSTi actually your probably right, Although I don't really listen to punk/rock. I think the reason why the general public(yourself included) would choose claypool or flea over someone like wooten is because of the genre of music they play. not a lot of people between the ages of 15 to 25 listen to funk/fusion/jazz so therefor they choose the idolize a musician within their favorite genre of music. I've learned to put style aside and focus of judging based on ability.
piperpilot26 1 year ago
@piperpilot26 again I am basing it on style and ability.
EyesOfTheSouthSTi 1 year ago
@EyesOfTheSouthSTi I like the Descendents and All and I respect Alvarez a lot but Freeman is in an entirely different league than him. Check out Axiom, White Knuckle Ride, Animosity or Rejected.
sneegro 1 year ago
@sneegro no he isn't. same league great punk bassist. I have all their albums. those are nothing special IMO.
EyesOfTheSouthSTi 1 year ago
@EyesOfTheSouthSTi I know the comment I'm replying to is pretty old now but I think you're right. I just think Karl Alavrez is better at writing bouncy fingerstyle pop-punk basslines and Freeman is better at kinetic Hardcore/Punk Rock lines because of his picking style and speed.
sneegro 10 months ago
@reaper420d hey dont compare anyone to anyone
especially a punk to a metalhead.
and cliffs dead
annyyyyywayyyyy!!!
matt freeman is punk bass god.
period.
nothingfeelstgood 1 year ago
@reaper420d Yeah, Clifford was the absolute best, but I love all of Metallica's work.
Just saying.
guitardeadsociety 1 year ago
@reaper420d well hold on here, black album was pretty great and load had it's moments. Why is ther arguments on metallica on a punk video anyway. Cliff was amazing. Matt is amazing. Justin bieber sucks. PERIOD
Metaldudehere 1 year ago
alright metallica sucks anyone that sous their fan base is a horrible bad. case closed. and this band is composed of gods
PUNKrockEERsSc00ter 1 year ago
I think it's actually so sad to waste some good talent like Matt Freeman on crappy group like Rancid. I would have seen him more into Megadeth, Metallica or jamming with guyz like Satriani. Combo guitar and bass solo would be awesome.
Cannabix 1 year ago
@Cannabix It's not sad at all. He's playing music he enjoys playing.
TommyDeLong 1 year ago
Still I would have liked to see him in action with more talented people.
Cannabix 1 year ago
@Cannabix metallica isn't a good group. they have no musical talent, just amps with alot of distortion. id say rancid is better
angusyoung321123 1 year ago
@angusyoung321123 i think they "Had" musical talent... songs like Orion or Anesthesia Pulling Theet have a great composition level but right now they are one of the worst band ever xD
josepintog 1 year ago
@josepintog haha yes agreed
angusyoung321123 1 year ago
your just saying that cuz you like metal and not punk
kunaikai 1 year ago
@Cannabix rancid is really good, and i really hate metallica and megadeth so i personally think he's good where is is. plus metallica has the suicidal tendencies bassist
punx4life123 1 year ago 2
@punx4life123 bah all I like from Rancid is their bassist, I had many friends listening to them, I really tried to like it and still, I really can't find any talent in their group besides their bassist. Still you guyz can think Rancid is "the shit" but I won't comment anymore. I still think it would have been great if he did join a group able to run on their instrument as he does.
Cannabix 1 year ago
@Cannabix dude que te pasa?
He's a bad mother fucker bass player...rancid is not crappy, is just punk.
Matt Freeman on Megadeth? (Crappy) Mustaine do not deserve a bass player like him...
And Metallica and Satch? you are fucking crazy
josepintog 1 year ago
I use both picks and fingers, depending on which band I'm playing with, what genre etc.. Not so much about the sound, I pretty much get the same sound no matter what I use, although if I want a warmer and more boomy sound, I usually use my fingers.. I have no rules really, I switch from day to day..
I think both fingers and picks are great, I don't see the point fighting over it! If it sounds good, why care about if it's played with a pick or not?
Btw.. I love Matt Freeman!!!
paulsimonon82 1 year ago
I like playing both ways but I've always preferred using my fingers. It just lends to more versatility... anyone Freeman is very good.
TroyDavidAlexander 1 year ago
1st of all... +1 to xmplft's comment matt is sick. a pick suits the type of music he's playing. i'm willing to bet he's got good finger style technique too. i never understood the big deal over who plays how. music is ( in my opinion ) an expression of individuality. i find it small minded to talk shit about someones technique.
hankshapabowitz 1 year ago
it really doesn't matter how you play it. if he wanted to solo with his fucking dick and it sounded that good, i wouldn't be judging him.
however you want to play is how you should play. if you like the way a pick sounds, use a pick. if you want to slap, slap. if you have a problem with this, fuck off.
xmfplt 1 year ago 3
bass is better with a pick cmon, finger the girls not a bass
rockerdude344 1 year ago 3
lol, you absolutely have no fucking idea what playin bass is about.
if i want to use a pick, i play guitar.
picks are for whimps.
freeman can't play this solo with his fingers, that's why all wannabe-bassists use picks - to play some 16th, cuz they can't finger them.
Hawolation 1 year ago
@Hawolation you cleary have no idea what playing bass is about. picks are for whimps? sorry o mighty god of bass enlighten us all. you sound like a wanna be yourself. obviously i have know idea who you are, but i bet youre a greasy metal head with shoulder length hair who thinks he/she is better than everyone else because your music is \,,/HEAVIER!\,,/ OMG LUK HOW HEAVYZ MA MOOSIC TOONS ARE OMG OMG THEEZ PPLS WIV PICKZ CANZ NOT PLAY BASS COZ DEY IS WIMPS OMG HEAVYNESSES OMG

this guy named alex says that Rancid isnt true punk and that theyre sell outs... we must stop this! if you have a facebook account, search "Alex Lake, Rancid Is Still Punk and They Haven't Sold Out!!" and join the group! Punks unite!

A FIRE INSIDE STICKER ON HIS BASS, WOOT.
