my problem with the radio is they play the same songs over and over again, and only select songs from like 4-5 artists. A good mainstream song/artist will come out once in a blue moon, but quickly die becuase they over play everything and you get tired of it.

The music industry beyond sucks today. I don't understand how so many people (especially teenagers) can become so disillusioned with the lack of real talent and artistic integrity. You need to stop listening to the radio. I haven't listened to anything aside from talk radio (sports) for years. Do independent research, figure out good rappers (most of which are indeed underground), and put them onto your ipod or computer or whatever.
Good underground rap: Murs, Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, Snow Goons, Da Ranjahs, Tech N9ne, Brother Ali, the list goes on and on. You just have to look hard for good music.

They are popular because they got signed to a major record label, who have a tough time distinguishing talent. The labels pour tons of money into whatever artist, flood the radio and MTV/VH1/BET/CMT with their music, and thus sell tons of albums.
Good news: that kind of promotion is slowly dying.

We used to have an all-hip hop/urban music station in my home town, and it was one of the hottest radio stations too. But a year and a half later, it changed into another typical pop Top 40 station because their sponsors forced them to change their format.

One thing I heard from the documentary, Merchants of Cool, which examines the relationship between big business and youth populations, is that cultural trends are determined by a cycle in which the youth influence big business which in turn influences the youth and so on.
What's on the radio is very much influenced by big business and heavily controlled by the FCC and Clear Channel in terms of social standards, i.e., no profanity or subversive leftist rhetoric. (Right wing rhetoric is okay.)

i was born in 92 and i grew up with todays music. i didnt even know who AC/DC was or who the beatles were!! i never heard of led zeppelin, pink floyd, queen, rolling stones until i was 16 & 17!!! now i really appreciate and like 60s/70s/80s music alot more that modern music. i dont think its possible fo me, or for anyone near my age to dislike todays music, we grew up listening to it....but i sure as hell LOVE old music more and im learning something new about music everyday

You need to stop listening to the radio. I haven't listened to anything aside from talk radio (sports) for years. Do independent research, figure out good rappers (most of which are indeed underground), and put them onto your ipod or computer or whatever.
Good underground rap: Murs, Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, Snow Goons, Da Ranjahs, Tech N9ne, Brother Ali, the list goes on and on. You just have to look hard for good music.

They are popular because they got signed to a major record label, who have a tough time distinguishing talent. The labels pour tons of money into whatever artist, flood the radio and MTV/VH1/BET/CMT with their music, and thus sell tons of albums.
Good news: that kind of promotion is slowly dying.

We used to have an all-hip hop/urban music station in my home town, and it was one of the hottest radio stations too. But a year and a half later, it changed into another typical pop Top 40 station because their sponsors forced them to change their format.

payola ..... is running the radio. Columbia records and all the other major labels pay the djs and raio stations to play specific artist songs. Radio is bull crap 100% your being real. Speak the truth.
