wellesz31, yes there are plenty of books written about Cambodia which are very affordable in Cambodia you can get. Try to get Elizabeth - When the war is over or if you can read Khmer you can read WHO IS ANGKAR? there are many mores which you can browse it in local Khmer book store, they are cheap too.
Cambodian parents have the answered"Khmer rouge or people part of the genocide", they see it. If they seen a Vietnamese person killing a Khmer families that answer your question. My families in the war have been killed by Vietnamese and not educated Khmer. (Youth or Khmer in prison). Only way to bring the Khmer culture down is our self and our neighbor that's what political is about..
Even so, this doesn't make any sense: Caldwell thought the Khmer Rouge were on the right track: even if he knew about the atrocities, he was about to go sing the praises of Pol Pot and co. trying to convince Westerners that the ends justified the means. You would think Elizabeth Becker, who clearly found them barbaric, would be a much likelier victim.
Are you suggesting the invading Vietnamese would have found his support of the prior regime inconvenient?
If the Khmer Rouge did make no sense why blame on Pol Pot regime? don't you think there is something wrong and how people assume too much because it was communist. What stop people from progressing further is they all come to the same conclusion of Pol Pot killed 2 or 3 millions people. If they were ask "WHY" and the common theme would be he was a killer and communist. You see it was too much assumption coz the principle of communism. There was something else which hidden from the outside world.
The thing is that most westerner's don't understand about Vietnamese inside the Khmer Rouge. People think Pol Pot had full control of the regime but I guess not. Malcolm may have known who were really behind Pol Pot atrocities.
You're blaming the Vietnamese for the killing fields? You need to THANK the Vietnamese for saving what was left of the Cambodian people from the fanatical Khmer Rouge and their leader Pol Pot. Where did you learn such a bizarre alternative history? I wish you all the best but this blaming everything on Vietnam is ridiculous. It destroys your credibility. Obviously there has been conflict between Vietnam and Cambodia- but you are wrong. Please, read some history books written by sane people.
I'm not blaming Vietnamese but saying this is how they do it. Again you assuming me blaming other because you are badly informed. Get this, is the world forbid Cambodian to say anything but rather to listen and read what Vietnamese and Westerners has to say? wrong is right and right is wrong the truth is so bias.
You are just another someone who looks on the surface of things rather than breaking it down to see how things actually work. I dont blame you since this seems to be the case for most Cambodians today. I can see that mainstream media is very good at brainwashing these young ones. I suggest you read Brother Enemy to get at least a glimpse of the real truth instead of relying on filtered media with most information omitted by those who sparked our civil war i.e. USA
I think it was directed at me Ahmek. Ahmek, the suffering of the Cambodian people in the 1970s is almost beyond belief. The things the Khmer Rouge did, which are well documented- it's almost impossible to believe that human beings are capable of such things. But make no mistake- it was your fellow Cambodians who were behind the killing. The US and Vietnam share some blame but the ultimate blame rests with Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. Your rewriting of history, fabricating history, is dangerous.
Our history is pretty much hidden in the West. And even so, Pol Pot is not very well known to many people either. It only takes an open-minded person who is willing to dig for information and go that extra step in order to understand the political situation, the back-stabbing agenda of our neighbors, the major influences and support, not to mention the many other factors which led to our genocide. Just like the Pathet Lao, the Khmer Rouge were merely a tool to a much greater scheme.
Blame everything on the big, bad Vietnamese. Of course the Cambodians aren't to blame for the genocide! They're a pure people!
Blame the Vietnamese! It's always the Vietnamese! And sometimes the Americans! Pol Pot did nothing bad and if he did it was because of the Vietnamese!
Like I said, this revisionist history, where folks want to try and blame Vietnam for everything is not just a lie- but it's dangerous. I wish you all the best but most of all I wish you would stop peddling racist lies.
asdffd, maybe you should spend sometime with former King Sihanouk and hear what he has to say about the ingratitude Vietnamese. Blaming and describing is two difference thing, which of cause you are unable to handle new information and go straight to the BLAMING. Again you are assuming it's a lie but you haven't prove it. Is it racist? NO because you are unable to understand or willing to analyze. The plight of Cambodians silent death.
Nobody has said that Pol Pot didn't have anything to do with the genocide. But AhmekKhmer as well as myself are implying that you are looking at only the surface of things, and denying this would be a lie in itself. Your last comment was a comformation that you either lack the mental capacity to understand or you are unwilling. There is no need to post childish comments such as your last one. You should know by now that American history hides the bulk of our civil war.
American history hides the bulk of our civil war? Explain. I was a history major so I'm intrigued as to why you would make such a statement. Tell me what you feel was hidden.
A history major are you? If that is so, please do enlighten me. Tell me about the history of the Indochina Federation from your perspective. Theres no need for me to repeat to you what has already been said.
Now I see what you're saying-thanks for the clarification.
Yours is an interesting perspective, and while it doesn't seem to square with the accounts of other Cambodian's I've read (Dith Pran and the 29 accounts he edited, Loung Ung, Chanrithy Hin, for now, I also have Haing Ngor and Vatey Seng, but I havene't read them yet), I'm willing to acknowledge that I may not have the whole story.
wellesz31, personal account is only about an ordeal that they have gone through which doesn't really tell the bigger picture behind it. But you should pay attention to details which could be use as a cross reference.
I'd be happy to read any books you can recommend, Ahmek (I put "Brother Enemy" on the list). My library on Cambodia is growing, but not exhaustive.

A lot of what the Khmer Rouge did makes no sense. They were incredibly paranoid.
