I sing and play together all the time. It's good training. If you play tabla try singing the nagma while you play your repetoire. Or if you're a singer learn theka and keep it while singing. This kind of training makes you understand tala and how things fit together like no other. Or, like the old Ustads, clap theka while reciting compositions. Then play theka while reciting comps then play comps while singing nagma. Then you'll see.

Ustad Taari khan should know that he is not a singer. When he is singing he is playing les beutiful tabla. when he is playing tabla he is not proforming the sur good.

I say a big mistake of him. Please learn from Zakir hussain and just stay by your Tabla..

@emal75 That's a very ignorant comment of you. I would like to see you try the same thing. Khan sahib is very talented and not everyone can do this. Think before you talk, zakir ji and tari saab are at there own places, i suggest you learn how to respect talent before you tell other tabla masters to learn from someone else. No one can touch Ustad Tari Khan's lay. and sur. It is just out of your understanding of music.

Yes, I did watch this episode of Raat Geye. Tari is one of the finest tabla Players in the world. i remember he played Tabla for my EMI's cassette titled Amjad parvez sings Mir in the eighties. It was a LIVE recording as music composer Mian Sheheryar always thought that LIVE recordings always produce best results. Playing Tabla and singing together was a challenge for Tari.

This guy is amazing. He is a rare commodity, a sort of genius really having an ability to perform two specialised acts, singing and playing tabla at the same time. Thats what I call talent.
