GREAT TUNE...but that "mary had a lil' lamb" shit at 1:30 ruins it!!!! Why do they gotta be so silly!!!! Get rid of all those fills and frills, trey!!
@oreokookie1000 Not a fill or frill. It's a composed portion of the tune. Tension and release, buddy...tension and release. That section of the tune is a musical palindrome, interestingly. I also think it makes the remaining sections of the song more poignant. You can't appreciate the almost (but not quite) cheesy, soaring melodies without something discordant and off-time having been played behind it.
@mikesome1383 i agree...however, I think they go way overboard with the silly.......it detracts from the emtional impact of the song...sometimes you don't want the intellectual , you just wanna good tune...I think the beatles had a good balance of the cheesy vs: dissonant backing......the way trey does it is simply jarring and out of place......totally, totally out of place....space...ace....space.....brace.....
i listened to this version of this song when i was tripping on mushies, walking through the woods. and now everytime i hear this it reminds of the crazy beautiful things in nature i saw..
Phish works so well because every member is such an accomplished musician. I see it from Trey's perspective because I play guitar as well, and it's so much easier to really get creative and out there with your guitar playing when you have a band that's amazing enough to keep up. Trey can really put forth some amazing stuff because he has the perfect band to complement his style, no matter how bizzare he gets they can still follow. And that goes for every member, not just Trey.
@jbender23 yeah i feel the same way, i play guitar and have had a couple moments like that with my band. Its really cool when you have like minded musicians and almost equally talented so everything just clicks. Love Phish for that, and there's a lot to learn from these guys...and a lot of other bands too!
I love this song. Especially since it reminds me of my son (who was 15 years old in 94 & listening to Phish and playing his bass guitar in his room). I would think, my god, this is good, who are they? Beautiful, really beautiful
@thekrueg56: 94 was definitely their best year, imo, with 97 a close 2nd. 94-97 were the best, but what makes those years so great is that theyre all so great but so different bc the sound continued to evolve. 98 was great too, but 94-97 was the true peak Phish.
No Halloween until '95 for me *sigh*

I believe I was here also. If I remember correctly, (and that's a BIG if), they played the
beatles White Album 2nd set, then played a full 3rd set. Something like a 4-5 hour show, unreal.
