you can also cut that same bottle in half, flip the top part and stick it inside the bottom, fill with medium and nutrient, add a plant, and you have a deep culture hydroponic setup.
heat causes toxic chemicals in the plastic to be released into the air. your plants breath that in, you're might be ok superficially, but at the microscropic level, they will be poisonous
@isaidwhat29 that would mean every beverage you drink that is in a plastic bottle would be poisonous. and since there is no BPA in drinking containers it willl be fine
I used a few bottles like that the last couple of years. This year I have been saving my plastic coffee bottles and will use them to start a little home garden nursery before transplanting them to the vegetable garden. Love the idea of recycling.
There is always a loss of light when you put a barrier between the plant and the sun. However if this allows him to grow during colder months then it's still a win-situation.
@flipflopG29 No actually the plants get light at night. You see these particular plants he's growing are nocturnal and they only come out at night so when they come out at night the moon reflects the sun's ultraviolet gamma ray bursts and gives birth to life on Mars. This is how all life formed on Earth....
I am going to try this for the geraniums on the shelves at the base of my windows! That will keep them warm from the cold air that comes in when it gets so cold like last night!
those corn plants are pretty far spaced but that a great idea i only use the bottom for my water reservoir for my seedling pots guess i could make pots and water reservoir's out of them to and i like this idea hear in Australia im going to do that when we get a bit warmer
he get condense since the air aoutside the bottle is much cooler. when the outdoors temperature rise he will get les condense and he will have to use the cap to contain water.
@lifeissugar still need natural air supply containing co2 but lets not get 2 technical but you can do that with seedlings i use old disposable lunch box's in a window seal and keep the lid on and that works great 7 days have tobacco plants sprouting and tomato plants almost 2 inch high but i do use seedling mix with nutrients and all that in their
What if your plant is in a semi-dessert enviroment? Will the bottle protect it from the over exposure of sunlight?

@isaidwhat29 It probably won't get very hot in there. Hopefully it's enough to prevent freezing.

self watering too great!

This is cool. Isn't it necessary to close the top too. It could retain more moisture.
