Song is by Jack Guthrie, Woody's brother. Woody sang it, of course. Thanks for the tour of that familiar old red dirt ... couldn't appreciate it as much, growing up and longing to wander.
Great video. Looks like you had a good. Hope you'll come back and see us again soon. I was born here and have moved away several times but that old red dirt called me home. I love it!
I am homesick after seeing this and so proud to be from Poteau! I have heard it said, that Home is in the heart. Now I know it's true. Wonderful song and video footage.
This made me miss my home town and home state! it has long been said, it does not matter where one lays the head as HOME is in the heart. How true. This song, the video actually made me tear up. Home sick!
You know, I think it is -- to the best of my memory. I know it is connected to some capital enterprise. In fact, because of that I was a little reluctant to put him in the movie. But having the Howe type there made it too hard to resist. All the best.
i am sure that it is because i grew up there and remember it being there although it is no longer there now. i went back for a visit a couple of years ago and it was gone. probably because it would have been considered "racist" for some reason by now.
Love this song & Jimmy LaFave! And yes, Oklahoma rocks!! I'm from IL but I spent almost a week in OK last year and it was amazing.....heading back down this spring & fall :)
I have to live in Texas now have for 14 years, and it sure ain't Oklahoma. Not near as pretty as Oklahoma, and the people are not the same as my Native home Oklahoma, beautiful video, thank you so much. Okie and proud of it.
In addition to my last post, I noticed you had the gate sign of the DeMarcus Ranch in the Saddle Mountain area in one shot. I know some of the DeMarcus folks. One of them was in my class all the way through school at Cache. They had a long bus ride to school through the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge.
Astute of you to notice. Actually, I was following a map Jimmy LaFave gave me that took me From Colorado through only western Oklahoma on my way back to Texas. I think the whole state is great visually.
Perhaps I'm crazy, but this is ART and i don't believe in censorship. I kicked back on the sofa, and took that road trip with yall, imagining the road chat, the stops, the wide open sky, great music and friends. You made me feel I was with you, Damn we had a blast!
Thanks so much. I'm for everything but those fighting roosters. I worked hard to get the question on the ballot that put the question to Oklahomans that got that bloodsport outlawed. Sadly, the brutality continues legally in two other states and illegally anywhere people have no respect for our fellow creatures.
Cindy- Thanks for your comment. Interestingly, it was months after I posted this video that someone informed me that those roosters were being bred for fighting. In fact, I was told I was lucky I wasn't shot shooting that footage. For the record, I am staunchly against any abuse of animals -- unfortunately, it apparently is a part of the Oklahoma culture which this little movie hopes to capture.
Hi - Yes, when you see individual little housing units for each rooster it can only be for fighting. If one wants fryers or eggs, one would need hens too, one large pen and one sizable henhouse. I must say I don't consider it part of Oklahoma culture anymore. It's weird too, because I had more Republicans sign my petitions than the old-time, yellow-dog Democrats here. I dig your idea though. Nice editing and terrific choice in Jimmy.
Truth be told, I also loved the sound of the roosters crowing. It seemed an appropriate start to the movie -- like a start to the new day. Thanks for your comments. I love Jimmy's music and being a part of his band.
Funny thing. When the law passed the first time, countless thousands of "fighting roosters" were put to death by the hands of those who got the law passed.
Their carcasses were dumped off of bridges, left to rot in creeks and gullies across the state.
Those roosters ain't for eatin' they're for fightin'. An example of a nation with too many laws. Jimmy LaFave is a true American talent. Left wing, right wing or chicken wing, if you're an Okie you've gotta love it!
Thanks for the comment. I once lived in OK city but for only a year. I really enjoyed my drive through your beautiful state. And Jimmy's song makes the video.

It may be hard for some to appreciate the scenery and sentiment of this video unless you were born or have lived there. Real country, real people.
Just a red-dirt Okie from T-Town.
