Ah, back in the days when there was something on TV.. even when there's wasn't anything on TV! A real contrast to day, when there's something on TV, but there really isn't anything on TV. If that makes any sense whatsoever!
Anorak fact - the reason for Test Card G appearing on BBC2 was that they used to use the BBC2 distribution circuit (which carried the BBC2 network around the country) during trade tests to distribute programme material to the various regional centres. So the regions would all opt out of network and put up TCG (they could generate it locally, unlike F) and play their own music in so the network feed was free for the feeds from London. The music would change at the same time as TCG appeared.
Does anyone remember the TV trade test transmission films from about 1970? These featured heavily in my early memories.
There was one called 'The White Horses' (I think), which was about power boats and the music for that was fantastic. It was on about 15:50 in the afternoon before 'proper' stuff was broadcast like Jackanory.
@moosem2s The BBC was regulated as to how many programmes could be shown. So, in the spaces between they used to show either a test card or in-vision teletext with music. Shops that sold TVs liked to have some form of picture to show their sets working, and the BBC provided that by broadcasting this during the day-time. This was 25+ years ago, before TV was deregulated and we got 24 TV. Quality rather than quantity.
dose anyone remember when bbc1 used to close down it would always play the national anthem and put a few pics of the queen up while it was playing,,,,
In this picture I see a dragon on a bike - two wellies - a ham sandwich - brad pitt´s arse - an alien shitting in my hat - and the PIN number for your cash card!
This is a great video. I love idents off tv and I am always on the websites that have them on. Pity they don't put test cards on much now, they are better than repeats.
I remember something like this CEEFAX, but it was called Keyfax, and it was run after Channel 32 (WFLD) in CHicago. It was called "Nite-Owl" and it would run pages of news issues of the day, during the late 70's to the early-mid 80's
im looking for a track they used to repeat over and over on the test cards.. Its called sensimmea or selisimma or something with those letters. It was orchestral and a damn fine track! Please private message me the name if you know it so I can go buy it. Thank you.
Thanks to tubedougz for posting the BBC2 test card and music-it brings back some memories!
The music I think comes from two CDs, Test Card Classics-The Girl, The Doll, The Music; and Big Band Width, both of which were released by Chandos Records in 1996 and 1997 respectively. Thanks also for the different test cards shown. Well done!
I am going to have to have a bit of a bash aren't I. I think this is what's know as good harmless fun. Have a quick look on my YouTube channel. There are more on there. Thanks.
As I understand, series 2 ends the program. He either dies or is revived. The question for me is, is this Sam Tyler's Heaven? Can he stay there for eternity if he chooses?
I am a child of the 70's - I would love to re-visit those halcyon days too! I reckon that babes were far sexier then too, the only problem is, they often smoked a lot and as a result - a snog was like licking the base of an old ashtray. Loved 70's telly too. This, sadly, all on the day that we loose John Inman. VIVE THE 70'S!
Oh yes, those where the days when Frank Bough was presenting Grandstand, Jan Leeming and Richard Baker read the news and Ivor The Engine was at the end of Children's hour and Swap Shop was king.
Did you the Swap Shp special recently? I loved those old faces on TV. Why end Grandstand I wonder. We have far better TV sets these days, digital clarity, massive screens, HiFi sound and all the rest - but DESPERATE programmes. If only the content had kept up with the technology!
No I didn't - I have seen his brilliant stuff - but this stuff has been downloaded from sites here and there (including BBC). Then all I did was stick it all together on Windows Moviemaker. Simple really!
Hipflasks - thank you very much for your comment. I rather like it! There does seem to be a great disparity in the way the world was to the way the world IS. I also think that not ALL change is necessarily for the better. Perhaps if there was less horridness on the telly, maby the world would gradually become decent again. Horridness or trade tests - we should have a vote? Cheers Dave!
'Tube Dougz', Blunkett here. If I'd still been in office I would have flagged your clip as inappropriate. This kind of nostalgia for when Britain was still half decent isn't what the Labour Party wants to see. Think yourself lucky.
Erm, the clock seems to have stopped. At least it will be correct once a year including the date. Good try though!

What is this actually for, and im not trying to be rude or anything thats a genuine question

You'd have to be British to understand.
500 characters isn't enough.
I suppose 6you could ask yourself:
"What's YouTube actually for".

I am British, but I'm only 15 so maybe this is beyond my time.

I have both of these Chandos CDs which I often listen to.
It's nice to have this online version of the test card and music-it's just a shame that it's not on tv any more!
