Cannonball is BURNIN! -No I mean REALLY! Dude was soloing with a cigarette in hand the whole time and looks like he got burned cuz he drops it and starts SCREAMIN on the horn right after that @ 4:40 LMAO!!!!
Interesting Cannon is coming in with and Ornetteish/Traneish semi out solo. He's trying hard to push the envelope and show he's more advanced then Dex and Gene. But Hampton and the rest of the rhythm section are not going that way so it doesn't come off as Julian wanted. Kenny Clarke is very swinging here. To me Crenshaw on bass is playing it a little too straight.
This is 'Cannon' really cutting loose with all the time and space he needs. Largely gone are the gospel licks he was associated with for so long, replaced by an atonal 'walking the edge' of the harmonic progression. I loved his earlier stuff and I love this particular era of his playing just as much. An enormous talent - accompanied by other enormous talents here at Montreux. Thanks for posting.
