  • How do I open CRYSTAL?! The bolt is WAY different from gold and silver's .-.

    My parents were telling me to give up... and every damn video uses gold.... my gold is lost, and fixed. I fixed silver.... but how do I OPEN crystal? ;_;

  • @MrSuperHeatran How did you open the other ones? Do you have a 3.8mm security bit?

  • @VideoGameMuseumCom I think my parents used tweezers. My parents used tweezers for crystal, and all we got was the plastic around the bolt chipped off.

I doubt we have a 3.8 mm security bit, but I'll make sure...

  • @MrSuperHeatran Tweezers or very fine needle nose pliers will often work, but I'd suggest buying a 3.8mm security bit if you get stuck. Just click the link under the video to see what it looks like and if you end up wanting to buy one.

  • I learned how to do this about 3 years ago with a dead copy of gold i bought at value village for 5 bucks. i fixed it, and sold it to my cousin along with a dead and fixed silver for 20 bucks. then his girlfriend brought a dead gold, i fixed that one for 5 bucks. good times. So whenever i come across dead pokemon games, i buy em, fix em and sell em.

  • @DrPhilMusic Absolutely! I love finding, fixing these up, and reselling them as well. It's a great way to build up your retro gaming fund!

  • @VideoGameMuseumCom I used to have a retro game collection, but due to my busy life at work and the fact i had no room, i had to sell off my old games. (I sold my NES over Craigslist and a few games for 40$, Sold off 75 SNES, NES, and Genesis titles to another collector, who bought them all for 75$) and then i gave my SNES & Genesis to a church for a fundraiser (The SNES went with SMW and 2 controllers, the genesis went with Pirates! Gold and Shining force II)

  • @DrPhilMusic (Continued) And then i sold my N64, 4 controllers, Xpansion pak and 30 games to one of my best friends for 120$, I sold my PS2 to my cousin for 20$ and gave him my original Xbox. Currently I have a NDS, Xbox 360, another PS2, a Gameboy SP, and a Wii, which has all the retro titles i want. Currently I think i still have 100 games lying around.

  • @DrPhilMusic Sounds like a great collection! Best part is that those games are still in circulation for others to enjoy.

  • So if the solders break, the game data cannot be saved anymore?

  • @respectthekick07 Yeah, if the electricity can't flow, it can't maintain a saved game.

  • @VideoGameMuseumCom But if the solders aren't broke, it'll save no problem, right?

  • in my pokemon crystal cartridge it looks like a plate covering the battery, not tabs. it looks like a circular metal piece covering the whole battery. would this still work and how?

  • @JamesIsTheRealKing I haven't seen that setup before.

Would you send a photo? (mark @ videogamemuseum . com )

  • @VideoGameMuseumCom nevermind. mine actually could slide out as the side of the plate allowed the battery to be pushed out for easier changing of the battery. i did not need to break any tabs. thanks for the video though! havent tried it out yet but the new battery will most likely fix it. thanks again!

  • A CR2032 will also work, this can be found in Heart Gold and Soul Silvers Pokewalker !

  • @IOwnAFender140 I always like to replace with the exact same battery type that I started with, but I believe you're right. Using both the CR2032 and CR2025 are 3V batteries. In my understanding, the only difference is that the CR2032 is 3.2mm in thickness and the CR2025's is 2.5mm in thickness.

  • Wow! Thank you so much! I can play my pokemon crystal again!

  • @wifimax1 Great! Happy gaming!

  • the hardest shit was to open that thing haha, but it worked thanx

  • Very good idea my friend, this way is a lot easier than solder and stuff

  • But wouldnt you loose your game anyway? seeing on how there is a short time where there is no battery?

  • @cpucpu657 That is correct. This process is generally used when a person already has a dead battery or has backed up their game on a device like a Mega Memory Card.

  • Now in the future, when I'm replacing the battery again. Will taking everything apart be easy? (the tape, the arms)

  • @buttderp You've got it! It'll be way easier the second time. Of course, hopefully that will be 10-15 years from now.

  • Do you have batteries that actually have solder tabs?

  • @Capsuledragon I'm sorry, but at this time we just sell the batteries without tabs as shown in the video.

  • 9gag army!!

  • Thanks! worked like a charm :)

  • @shennnah Awesome! Happy retro gaming!

  • I just repaired a yellow, crystal, and silver version this morning. Crystal was the hardest because there were 4 welds on the battery instead of 2. Took me 30 minutes to get it out because I didn't want to scratch anything. Frustrating but worked, thanks for the vid. :P

  • @stephenebgriffin You're welcome. Glad to hear you played the better-safe-than-sorry approach. It's easy to slip and scratch the board or to break off the contacts completely. Well done on repairing all 3 of your games!

  • Hello! I have a different problem with my Pokemon Crystal version. Whenever I go to talk to someone and the dialog box comes up, everything just freezes and the game doesn't respond. What could be the problem? Would replacing the battery fix the problem? If anyone can help me, I'd be really grateful! Thanks!

  • @didy444 That doesn't sound like a battery issue, but I'm really not sure.

  • i can't open my pokemon gold on my gba, if i trade the battery it will fix my problem?

What i can do to fix this problem?

  • @asCaio When you say "can't open", do you mean "can't open a saved game"? Can you see the saved game files or is there currently no saved game file to open? If the saved game files are not there, then your battery is probably dead.

  • @VideoGameMuseumCom I cant' play, when i turn on the game, always appears the GAME BOY logo and the Nintendo logo crashed :(

  • @asCaio I'd focus on cleaning the game's contacts to get it to start up. Once it's running, you'll know if you have a saved game feature working or not. Try scrubbing the contacts with q-tips dipped in WD-40 or rubbing alcohol. That does wonders on our games!

  • Thx u really helped me and made my day u saved me

  • well, i'd say 9gag brought us here!

  • @chiquita1405 well, i'd say that you should shut up

  • I know this is non-relevant to the video but can't people from 9gag stay on 9gag? I have seen them spamming videos and sites like you would not believe! You waste your time laughing at unfunny memes, that's fine by my me. Just don't preach about it like your marching in a pride parade because no-one cares.

  • @chiquita1405 lol go home 9fag, your site has no credibility. 9gag gets all of their comics from 4chan funnyjunk or reddit, all you guys do at 9gag do is put a watermark on it. instantly that makes you are one of us on the internet? not really. no

  • I noticed that my pokemon yellow has a battery with the numbers "90-66" on it, and is a bit smaller than the CR2025 batteries I was planning on using for its replacement. Will those batteries still work for it if I can get everything to fit?

  • @Zanjistic I decided to go ahead and try this and it worked. So, to answer my own question for anyone else who is curious - you can replace yellow versions battery with the CR2025 batteries shown in this video despite the fact that yellow's battery is not the same size. It's a little bit awkward and I had to cut the tape thinner, but it works fine.

  • In a sort of response to my comment I made about 40 minutes ago:

This might be more clear, and after reading through many of the comments I learned about the Mega Memory Card and did a little research on it. Would there be any way whatsoever to restore data with a MMC even if the battery was dead? I'm just trying to check on everything I possibly can before I start the process of replacing the battery. I had so many great Pokemon on Pokemon Silver so as you can see I'm a little hesitant haha.

  • Hello sir, thanks for the video first off. Its been the most helpful one I've seen. I was wondering though: Will replacing the battery for the save function erase the saved data or restore your saved game?

I've heard both things and I've also heard as "evidence" to this theory that every now and then your battery might sort recharge itself or find just enough juice to save the game again, thus restoring your game. Can you shed any light on this? Thank you for your time.

  • @WolfKnifeLaserTorch8 Good questions. I guess it wouldn't hurt to try the Mega Memory Card, but my understanding is that the battery is like the battery in a digital watch. Once the battery is out or dead, the watch loses the time (i.e., the saved data). If you do try the Mega Memory Card, just let me know how it goes. Maybe you'll shed some new light on the topic. And worse case scenario, you'll have a great device for backing up your game in the future. Best of luck!

  • Okay but i did it and i fixed gold and silver but i cant fix red, do you know how to fix yellow cause when i turn it on its a white screen

  • @almanzabrand1996 I'd try another battery and wrap the edges of the battery with electrical tape (like the yellow tape in the video). The method should be the same for any Pokemon game for the Game Boy Color.

  • @VideoGameMuseumCom the part that holds the batterie together fell of can i fixe that?

  • @almanzabrand1996 Yes, look for videos showing how to solder it back on.

  • @almanzabrand1996 As long as there is still a little bit on and you wrap it up well, you can get it to work without having to solder it back together, but if it's totally gone that won't work.

  • Do you happen to know how to fix pokemon yellow and red?

  • @almanzabrand1996 You use the same method as in the video.

  • Thank you!! It was really useful, now I can play my beloved Pokemon SIlver again!!

  • I'd avoid using non-electrical tape. Yes, using the skirt from the old battery is a great idea. I often make one out of electrical tape even if it's just on the edges that meet the metal tabs.

  • couldn't i just use regular tape and wrap it round the entire circuit board to keep it in place? also should i put the old baterries skirt on the new one to avoid short circuit?

  • just got an orgasm of gaming

  • @renesmeecullen234 You can click on the links below the video.

  • is there any stores i can buy the screwdriver at?

  • Urgent: If you break the tab off, are you screwed, or can electrical tape fix it??

  • @isetmfriendsofire Or super glue??

  • @isetmfriendsofire If you break off a tab, you need to solder it back on. There are plenty of YouTube videos on that if you search for them.

  • Can you use the same type of battery for yellow, red, and blue?

  • @isetmfriendsofire Just open them up to check inside. It should say on the battery and on the board.

  • Comment removed

  • where is the data chip?(in the gameboy color cartridge)

  • @nokia6111cp Honestly, we just replace the battery, so I'm not sure what each component on the board does. If you do some Googling, you'll probably find an answer.

  • excuse me, you know if Pokemon Green (japanese) use the same CR2025 battery?

  • @AND0R3 I'm not sure. If you open yours up, it should say on the battery and on the board.

  • please answer! does the 'Game Boy Color Mega Memory Card.' work on the original pokemon red??

  • @jacobcalvert It is supposed to work with all Game Boy Color games.

  • thanks for the vid just replaced my pokemon special pikachu and my pokemon gold and now they both save!!!!

  • @mega5gum Glad to hear it!

  • If you change the battery before it dies while you have a saved file, will the file be lost? If so, is there any way to preserve the saved file?

  • @Zanjistic If you disconnect the good battery, you'll lose the saved game. The easiest way to preserve the saved file is to back it up using a device like a Game Boy Color Mega Memory Card. You'll be able to use it to backup your saved game. Then, after you do the battery replacement, you can use it to restore your saved games.

  • @VideoGameMuseumCom Thanks a lot!

  • What happens if in my Pokemon Silver game there is no option to save at all? Is my battery dead and just needs to be replaced and the option will come back?

  • @shaina773 that is because the game has never saved just replace the battery and mi pretty sure ill come back because my pokemon special pikachu edition and my pokemon gold has the same thing and im going to replace it soon

  • @mega5gum Okie thanks a bunch!

  • @mega5gum That's nice to know! Thanks for the info!

  • @shaina773 When you press the "start" button during gameplay, there's no "save" option?

  • @VideoGameMuseumCom Yup no option at all

  • @shaina773 That's quite strange. I've never heard of losing the save option.

You should have a save function from the pause menu during game play no matter what. With a dead battery, I believe the game will attempt to save but lose the save after the system is powered off.

  • @VideoGameMuseumCom Thanks, mega5gum said it should be the same just to replace the battery and it should come back, so I will try it yet and see what it does! Thanks for your help

  • is duct tape electrical tape?

  • @DEEBIC021 Nope. Google "electrical tape" to see pictures.

  • u just killed my childhood.

  • Hi just bought the security tool from you from ebay, im very satisfied thanks dude! one question though, i just took apart my silver cartridge and took the battery out already but i made a small scratch on the green board where the battery is suppose to go, will this mess up my game?

Im receiving my cr2025 batteries in a couple days and wanted to get things started ahead of time

  • @pablo3264 It all depends on what you scratched and if it damaged anything on the board. Just pray it didn't do any damage. :)

  • @VideoGameMuseumCom its scratched where the circle where the battery is suppose to go, not a deep scratch though i guess i gotta wait till those dang 2025 batteries come in lol thanks dude ur awesome

  • @pablo3264 most likely no..... sorry to butt in. I know a lot about this stuff

  • @DEEBIC021 the game works fine i put in a battery i had from a different game worked fine booted up played it a good 20min so i guess its cool, you think more along the story ill run into errors?

  • @pablo3264 that's what told you, most likely, nothing bad would happen

  • @DEEBIC021 oh lol thought u said it wouldnt haha retard moment sorry ^^

  • Now this is a good tutorial.

  • I cant even get the back screw off D:

  • @Mudkip0930 Try a super thin needle nosed pliers or one of our security bits. Best of luck!

  • You rule, great video!!!

  • What kind of battery is that? Also, is it the same battery used in Gameboy Color games?

  • @MissHelloSkitty It's a CR2025 lithium battery. Sometimes Game Boy Color games also take smaller CR2016. As you can see form the video, the battery and game's board will be labeled. Just replace the existing battery with the same battery, and use the battery's label to figure out which one.

  • oh crap, fixed the gold but looks like im gonna need those soldering tools for the blue lol

  • :P lol my gold version was screwed up

  • time to fix my yellow version

  • can I do it with no tape?

  • @bogard57 Only if you use a soldering method.

  • i accidentaly broke those two brackets that hold the battery, if i cover the new battery on the place, will work it ?

  • @CrocodiloAlbino You'll have to solder the metal pin back in place. There are probably videos on YouTube that will show you how to replace the battery with the soldering method. Look for one of those, and you should be ok. Best of luck!

  • @VideoGameMuseumCom You said to use electrical tape. However, is any kind of tape fine?

  • @chikenpotpies We just use your average hardware store electrical tape.

  • I replaced the battery in Silver and Red, but Red still not save. Any suggestions?

  • @fernandocidofreitas I'd try repositioning the battery and, if that doesn't work, focus on cleaning the game. Once and a while I can't get them working either.

  • A new battery can save my games of pokemon?

  • @Bryant152 Yes, you can use a new battery to restore your ability to save games.

  • do o/ if nintendo need do a new game boy

  • @topixao Would please rewrite your question? I'm not sure what you're trying to say.

  • Thank....you...SO much. My gold version craped out, and this was the first video I found and it MADE!! my DAY!! I know have all 6 working games, and because I was so happy I bought a gamebit kit, thank you and keep gaming :)

  • @SupMamma88 Glad to hear it! Not a bad repair at all, huh?!

  • @VideoGameMuseumCom No its not, until you get a doubled welded battery, those HURT your hands, but Yellow (at least mine does) has a smaller battery 0.o

  • @SupMamma88 Its took me a whole day to get mt battery out of my gold because it was doubled welded. :(

  • Me and my dad did this on Pokemon Red and Blue Thx for the guide

  • @professionalpoliwag Glad to hear it!

  • Will needle point tweezers work instead of the specific bit?

  • @KangaskhanEspeon Yeah, good idea! I'm assuming really fine needle nose pliers or strong tweezers will work. Let us know how it works out for you.

  • @VideoGameMuseumCom my small needle noose pliers worked but it is a little difficult

  • I did it on Pokemon Gold and Silver, and they both worked! w00t! Tysm

  • @asagesavvy Glad to hear it!

  • OMG!!!! i ripped off the bottom terminal by accident. i pulled it right off along with the weld spot! does anybody know what i can do to get it back on? i've tried soldering it back on but since the whole terminal came off along with the solder point, theres nothing below it for any metal to solder to. can somebody make a video to HELP!!!!????

  • I've had a Pokemon Crystal game for over 10 years, and the person who had it before me had it for like 2 years, and the battery is still going strong, except the clock is now a half hour slow. I'm worried that it's going to die soon. Any tips on how to keep the battery going? And is this method of changing batteries really safe? I mean, won't the battery come loose or something if you just use tape?

  • @1885steve I've heard it'll go loose if you drop it or accidentally hit it on something. Otherwise this method works extremely well, unless you can solder it on yourself.

  • @thoserandomstories Right, you have to make sure that tape is good and tight. Otherwise, soldering is definitely your best bet.

  • @1885steve Great question. There's a device called a "Mega Memory Card" made by InterAct that allows you to back up your game's saved files onto it. I'd suggest buying one, backing up your saved games, changing the battery, and the using the Mega Memory Card to restore the saved game file back to the game.

That's the only way that I know of, but l'd be curious to know if there are other ways as well. Best of luck!

  • hi! I am extremely interested in buying a repair kit for color, but I'm not sure what I need to buy. I need to repair my pokemon gold. Could you send me the link?

  • @Soursop09 You need a 3.8mm security bit and (most likely) a CR2025 battery. Just select that combination after clicking the eBay link below the video.

  • i did it with glue and it worked =)

  • my pokemon gold saves but when i take it out the save ant there help

  • @tommal64 If the battery is dead, it will appear to save. However, once the system is powered off, then power is also cut off to the game and that saved game will be lost without a functional battery in the game.

  • @VideoGameMuseumCom Man i am very confused... You put the scotch under the battery and it works or i didn't see very well? Please give me an answer and please apologize my bad english! ^^

  • @MrAllex222 Use electrical tape (not scotch tape). Wrap the tape around both the battery and the metal contacts. One contact should be on each side of the battery, and the tape will hold everything together. Just let us know if you have any other questions.

  • Cool man, thanks!

I hope you have a wonderful day also :-)

  • Hey guys, sorry to leave a comment like this, I had this exact problem so I've set up a website to try and help with lots of info and a place to buy games too pokemart.co.uk

    Thanks

  • @rasclipse I can't find your website. Are you sure the URL is correct?

  • Im trying to get a kit to fix my gold version as well but I dont have paypal do you have any other way of payment using my debit perhaps?

  • @Mr1spooky4 Sure, I'll send you a direct message so we can discuss other payment options.

  • thank u so much i got all 3 gen 2 games none of them save thank u so much

  • @Enflames7 Glad to hear you'll be able to fix & play them!

  • will this work on a nes game like legend of zelda.

  • @43darnoc Yes, it's the same process for NES games like Zelda. Just let us know if you have any questions, and best of luck!

  • if i by mistake ripped off the tabs that attach to the battery if i solder it back on will it still work

  • @feraligatr4 Right, soldering things back in place should work.

  • wait so the tape wont melt or nothing it will work for a really long time like this??

  • @MikeFenix88 Your game & tape should never get hot enough to melt unless there's some other significant problem like being left in a hot car, being set on fire, etc. Electrical tape has a pretty long lifespan. In doing household projects like restoring old lamps, I've definitely peeled off electrical tape that was 10+ years old and found that it was still sticky and holding on fine. Plus, the casing of the game will be helping to hold everything in place.

  • Now once this battery goes out can you do the same thing to fix it or no ?

  • @DwightKSchrute3 Yes, any battery will die over time. If you use this method to replace the battery, you can use the same method to replace it 10-20 years from now when that battery dies.

  • You have such a relaxing voice :P

  • @zoomhaters :) ha!

  • @Flippio963 melt the end of a pen and stick it on the screw, and it molds to it

  • Comment removed

  • Will the board break if you press too hard to flat the tabs when you put in a new battery?

  • @TakashiMadigan Anything can happen depending on the amount of force you use. So, I'd assume that with enough force you could break the board, your thumbs, etc. Try to use your own good judgment there, and be careful.

  • Would I be able to do the same for a battery that already has tabs attatched to it, just remove the pre-existing tabs as well?

  • @FAnimator661 Yes, you could remove the tabs attached if you want to use the solderless method.

  • @VideoGameMuseumCom Thanks alot. So happy to be playing Crystal again.

  • @FAnimator661 You're welcome! Have fun!

  • This did work, but only after cutting myself in the process! Watch your fingers! lol
