PS3 can install some linux distro's on a partition on the internal HDD, however the CPU, Cell, is based on PPC architecture. So provided the PPC/Cell build for x app is present, then yes. Like a normal computer... but it's seriously slow - 256MB RAM with no direct access to the GPU... not fun.
i was pretty sure i found a vid showing a livecd mame emulator that you dont have to install linux to use, i guess just install it as the second os, i dunno tho, if anyone knows a version of mame like that, let me know

I have Fedora Core 8, Linux alternate OS on my PS3. I also have a Super Nintendo Emulator and ROMS, as well as a NES Emulator and ROMS on Fedora. The only thing I cant seem to find and install, is MAME for PS3. I know it's possible, cuz theres several videos on YouTube showing people running MAME on PS3. I can't find a PPC version to install. EVERYTHING installed in Fedora is of PPC build on my PS3. Can anyone help?????
I started with installing Fedora Core 5 on my PS3, then later on upgraded to Fedora Core 8 from within FC5. I can't tell you how to install FC8 alone......as I found several people who were reporting install problems on a PS3. If you have a PS3 and are online, add me! My PSN ID is Shadow-Runner.
ubuntu linux with gxmame is what i did. use sanaptic package manager to search of gxmame and you need to have you univeral repositories enabled if that makes since.

It means Multiple Arcade Machine Emualator...get it now? it's an emulator usually for DOS, Windows and Linux that plays most arcade games from the 1980's to like 2005, there way more than 3000 games currently that can be played at 100% playability (you know, just like the arcade) and some that are very close to that, do a google search and find out more because I don't have much space here to tell you everything...

Wii is good if you have tons of friends and like to throw parties. Its good for multiplayer, I guess. MOst were ports from third party games. 360 didn't have good games until after a year or so. Give Ps3 some time to release their games then say something.
You do know that 360 has almost year n half ahead of Wii and PS3. Give PS3 some time to finish making their games and then talk shit. BluRay is beating HD DvD sales by large gap. BluRay probly will win the format war like DvD. Microsoft made a mistake like Nintendo did with Gamecube not using DvD disk but instead 1.4GB minidisks.
Xbox Games have become very short now. It ends pretty quick. It is limited by the DVD9 that its using. When u compress files it becomes low in quality. Bluray allows more disk space so u get uncompressed audio and video which gives more detail. X360 GPU is about teh same as the RSX chip on the Ps3. The X360 ram might clock at a lil bit higher speed but the Ps3 cell CPU architecture allows it to get around using more ram that is clocked at higher speed with more Cores that has 356K cache.
The gpu of 360 and ps3 are matched, ps3 has one processor and 6 vector processors (spe's or dsp more like it) the 360 has 3 cores, one specialized for its hyporvisor like the ps3 has 2 spe's for the hypervisor. Yeah the ps3 can make some "cool" little effects and new things with the spes, but can you do the same on the 360, and the answer is yes.
MS have made shit loads of money on Xbox Live!, 360 is a far more powerful games console than the P$3, the only reason P$3 costs more and took longer to come out is BLURAY- which does fuck all for games (2 speed drive). 360 has far better GPU and memory and its piss easy and quick to make games for. My 360 wont blow cos i got a new 1 and i paid £250 with 4 games or i could have bought a P$3 for £425 with no decent games, fuck u ! even a retard can work that one out, u must be a retard.

And pay like $50 to play a couple of games. Sorry, but these games are old enough where it's pretty much public domain. Companies trying suck more out of it can stick it where the sun don't shine. Lots of these games suck, so you need to cycle through like 40+ games before you get a good one.

It means Multiple Arcade Machine Emualator...get it now? it's an emulator usually for DOS, Windows and Linux that plays most arcade games from the 1980's to like 2005, there way more than 3000 games currently that can be played at 100% playability (you know, just like the arcade) and some that are very close to that, do a google search and find out more because I don't have much space here to tell you everything...

why do people still argue about sony video game systems being good the sold us shitty hardware in the ps1 and ps2 finally the ps3 has some nice hardware but it still 3 times slower then a xbox. just do simple math 9.6ghz xbox 360 vs. 3.2ghz PS3 and duh the winners is xbox 360 its simple sony is so to go out of the video game business. they probably wont make money on the PS3 until ike 2010 and by then the xbox will be out.
P.S. I'm not a xbox fanboy I like nintendo

in ram ps3 has 256mb main, 256 video
in ram xbox360 has 512mb shared
both similar but different

Man your screwed you have to google missing chd files and you have to download it using torrent its for games like mortal kombat, killer instict 1and 2, san fransico rush all three of them,and area 51 thats some of the missing files.

I got this on my ps3 with yellow dog linux, you have to do alot of stuff to get this game running on xmame. Installing yumex will help you out alot.

Actually, Sony helped with the development of Yellow Dog Linux... they even give you the option to install it in the main menu.

Wii is good if you have tons of friends and like to throw parties. Its good for multiplayer, I guess. PlayStation 3 is intense because you can basically pull of Mame and Linux, and later Mugen (if someone can pull it off), which makes you go "WoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoW" Xbox 360 is alright, true the three red rings mean sorrow and you have to boy so much stuff to use Xbox Live, but I guess the Xbox 360 is okay. You guys have Halo while us PlayStation 3 people have Tekken 6 and Metal Gear Solid 4.

PLus PS2 came out it was nearly $500.. $400 or $450 i think. and controllers were $50 plus mmeory card. so did the games. But people bought that shit like it was ketchup or crack. back then that was large amount of money. I never once heard a person said, i want a Dreamcast back then, all they said was ME WANT PS2.

LIKE PSP, you can convert videos to MPEG 4 AVC format and watch it on ur PS3.. My box can't do that shit, only have to go threw buncha crap of hooking up my PC to it to watch certain bullshit format on my videos.

I had bought my 360 on its third shipment and even by then it still had shitty games. Only thing worth playing is DOA4 and Halo 2... HALO 2!! thats fucking sad. I had to wait until Gears of War came out to get something decent to play. I had more fun playing Ninja Gaiden Black for Xbox than my 360 games. MOst were ports from third party games. 360 didn't have good games until after a year or so. Give Ps3 some time to release their games then say something.

You do know that 360 has almost year n half ahead of Wii and PS3. Give PS3 some time to finish making their games and then talk shit. It goes for games back on PSX (aka PS1) when it first came out, barely anything was worth playing until, FFVII, Legend of Dragoon, Tekken, Gran Turismo, etc... Those legendary games are one of the greatest games of all time. But you have to fucking think for a second that it took those studios few years to make.

its a fact the the ps3 is supreme over the 360! free online play, blu-ray, better graphics, you can replace the harddrive with a bigger 3rd party one easily, home of the best fighting game and role playing game series (tekken, final fantasy), connects to the psp, wi-fi internet, and it looks so dam sexy! i love the wii and 360 too, but the ps3 hauls absurd amounts of ass

All that shit abd a Bluray Drive for only 600 fucking dollars is just a robbery. well, alot of shit on the online market r free and set at fair prices, unlike Marketplace on the 360 which charge you about $1.30 for damn wallpaper. I actually own a 360 soo i know. I rarely play my 360 now, kinda collecting dust until some good games come out like Blue Dragon and Bioshock. Maybe Stranglehold too but thats it for this year.

Its not the Ps3 fault that the game studios didn't try hard on their platform. Anyways, MS bought off most of the license and exclusives from Sony. They just throw money at people and they come in. Just becuz 360 games throw in a bloom here n there doesn't mean it always tops off PS3. It seems thrid party studios r more bias towards MS cuz they might pay them better or for some reason. well if u want realistic, check out GTHD or GT5, MGS4, Heavenly Sword, Haze few more

U need to learn about computers as well fuckhead. the ram on a vid card doesn't make render hi rez images, it just allows it to process shaders give more effect to images and how fast it can do multiple commands. Its the architecture of the vid card that allows it to render HD images. thats just one part. U must archive HD images already in the disk as a source in order for ur vid card to unpack it and read the images and show it on the monitor.

U dont use ram to make textures moron, u use ram to unpack all the textures and images from the disk itself. Well investors should stop trying to make a quick buck and give out quality games. I doubt that they didn't have enough time. They usually do but its mostly investors fault shitty games come out. Most 360 games r short becuz i actually own the fucking system with 13 games.

You could rewrite mame for powerpc more and include the spe's but it still wouldnt make performance on graphics anybetter. It still needs a gpu for acceleration. Also X11 isnt made to be responsive in the first place, and running in a frame buffer will render anything crap

Just bcuz its 2X BlurRay read speed dont mean its a shitty format. like Rewritable Disks r 2X-8X which is fucking slow compared to normal non Rewritable disks.. ur a fucking moron. It might read at 2X but doesnt mean it lags up the game or makes longer load times. The Cell CPU makes up for the speed anyways by having 7 small processors working on dfrnt things to take loads off the ram.

BluRay is beating HD DvD sales by large gap. BluRay probly will win the format war like DvD. Microsoft made a mistake like Nintendo did with Gamecube not using DvD disk but instead 1.4GB minidisks.

Xbox Games have become very short now. It ends pretty quick. It is limited by the DVD9 that its using. When u compress files it becomes low in quality. Bluray allows more disk space so u get uncompressed audio and video which gives more detail. X360 GPU is about teh same as the RSX chip on the Ps3. The X360 ram might clock at a lil bit higher speed but the Ps3 cell CPU architecture allows it to get around using more ram that is clocked at higher speed with more Cores that has 356K cache.

The gpu of 360 and ps3 are matched, ps3 has one processor and 6 vector processors (spe's or dsp more like it) the 360 has 3 cores, one specialized for its hyporvisor like the ps3 has 2 spe's for the hypervisor. Yeah the ps3 can make some "cool" little effects and new things with the spes, but can you do the same on the 360, and the answer is yes.

MS have made shit loads of money on Xbox Live!, 360 is a far more powerful games console than the P$3, the only reason P$3 costs more and took longer to come out is BLURAY- which does fuck all for games (2 speed drive). 360 has far better GPU and memory and its piss easy and quick to make games for. My 360 wont blow cos i got a new 1 and i paid £250 with 4 games or i could have bought a P$3 for £425 with no decent games, fuck u ! even a retard can work that one out, u must be a retard.
