I have a very powerful memory of listening to this on my little radio, on the Annie Nightingale show, and thiking the chorus backing was the most awesome sound I'd ever heard. I thought it was synthesiser, but it's actually guitar harmonics, isn't it? Great song anyway, takes me right back to my yoof.
Thank you, Agnes Leticia for posting this on my LovePeaceMusex group on FB! You know I love Simple Minds, and I love this song! (~_*) Obrigada, muy querida! hugzzz and a kiss, from Melody Fox (aka the Princess of Rock)
Nearly thirty years old and stills sounds as fresh as the day it was released - incredible. Credit to Jim and the boys but also to the genius that is Steve Hillage
Forbes was one of the best bass players of the 80s, much under estimated. He drives this tune without getting complicated. Simple Minds at their best was Sons and Sisters...
Ha ha, I think it's funny if you compare all the comments on different Minds songs, and if the band themselves are reading these, it may just dawn on them that pretty much everyone agrees they took a nosedive after New Gold Dream. Too late to change history now, and Jim & Charlie, we (mostly) forgive you. In any case it's great to listen to these great pre-Untergang songs.

Europeans have always had a love/hate relationship with the US, condescending towards the nation's constantly impetuous behavior; jealous of its vastness and natural wealth; patronizing of its insularity and lack of history; but adoring of its ability to shine a neon light on the Western values that still link the New World to the Old.

@tgeighties They started going downhill when Derek Forbes left, straight after "sparkle in the rain". The comparison to U2 stopped at that stage as U2 stayed doing their thing while Simple Minds lost their way imo.
You're probably right. Forbes was key in giving Simple Minds their unique early sound.
The thing about U2 is that they experimented too (Pop), but they were wise enough to go back to a sound that did not betray their fans who were there from the beginning. There were a few years in the late 80's and and early 90's when I refused to buy a U2 album....and I am sure there were many of us who thought they had sold out.
Oh god I love this song. I love many of their songs. Jim Kerr was and is an amazing artist, love him.
They sure don't make music like this anymore. If I could go back to the 80's I would in a heartbeat. Wonderful memories of those times. God where have the years gone.

i totaly agree,I read Jim Kerr didnt want to do "Dont you forget about me",[written by some one else for them" he should have trusted his instincts, back in the day the minds were beyond cool, cheers George.
Stourglassboy is right. I can remember a time when Simple Minds and U2 were pretty much tied as the best bands in the world. However, Simple Minds really went on a "radio friendly/commercial" path. They should have stuck with what they do best...like Depeche Mode did...
Taken from the album "Sons and Fascination", produced by the brilliant Steve Hillage, this, together with the second album realeased at the same time, "Sister Feelings Call", must rate as two of the greatest albums of all time. In the early 80's Simple Mind were as big as U2 and deserve to be so now. Awesome.
A lot of Simple Minds stuff didn't chart all that high when it was released in the UK. That must be because they were simply years ahead of their time. There can be no other reason for it when you listen to this.
Back in their heyday, NOBODY could touch these guys. no one even came close to their class and talent, not even U2, New Order, The Fixx, Ultravox or anyone from the 'New Wave' movement. Magic song but what's the song about? And don't say Love! :-)
SM's lyrics are generally pretty obscure - is it just fanciful 80's pop nonsense or is there a deeper meaning to the lyrics?

Genious Minds.
This star still shines brightly in the Simple Minds galaxy.
They totally owned their unique sound during the -70´s and -80´s, but with time this precious legacy would, sadly, diminish.
Their sound today is utterly foreign to me. Too commercial. The dynamism is gone, and that deep feeling has been lost.
But their earlier works are of such brilliant quality; they will sustain me a lifetime.
