what did you do with the air pump? the one that you need all the way at the top of the overflow box. does it stay there constantly or ir was just for the beginning to get the air out. since the little hose was there, does water come out of there or did y seal it? also y did some of your fish n coral died?
@totallydude198969 Only Used to start the siphon. Later learned I could stick some flexible tubing into the middle, suck the air out of the overflow tube and then pull the flexible tube out afterwards. A bit tricky, but got the hang of it.
hey that green spotted puffer that you have it is quite an aggresive fish and is a natouris fin nipper. If i were you I wouldent put those maroon clowns in with the puffer.Just a heads up.
pretty impressed over all..the finished product was not what i expected when i watched the first vid....Awesome that you use a QT too....not many of us do
this video helps a lots !!! you cool !!! thanks ! i chek lots of videos about this overflow box and your vidoe shows whit more detail what to do. one more time thanks.
Add fish to tank immediately after the 4min. The fish will be fine and ALL the ick on the fish will pop off after the freshwater bath. Tried and true. Ask any hobbyist. Also, you could put a regular sock on the intact into the sump. Work great just like a filter sock, but costs nothing. It also takes out all those fine particles you have because of the fine sand you added. Tell me what you think :) DO NOT. I repeat DO NOT add any screws to the overflow box unless plastic or any metal guard.
Let me help you a little. I personally don't believe quarantining is the way to go. Takes too long and there is a better route without having to go through all that trouble. Buy formaldehyde from a saltwater fish store. You keep it in your fridge. Everytime you buy a new fish you first temp acclimate then add half a cup wait 30min add another half wait 30min. 1hr total. Then fill a 1.5g bucket up with (FRESH) water add declor plus 7 drop of formaldehyde. Put fish in wait (EXACTLY) 4 min.
This was my biggest fear. But nothing at all. If the pump dies, no more water is sent to the main tank but water is still being sent to the sump. Thanks to the overflow box, water is no longer sent down when it goes below the overflow box holes. When the pump turns back on, water is then sent back to the top tank, reaching the overflow holes and the cycle is restarted. Just make sure the sump is never filled all the way up. I fill it about 65%-70%.
Very helpful! I set mine up as soon as I moved into my new house. Definately should have done more research first. How many GPH are you moving now with the 4 tubes in the overflow box? I am beginning a sump/refugium design and am trying to find a good HOB overflow system. Floods and GPH are my Biggest concern. It has to be 100% before I even think about running it.
Actually changed the tubes to 2 bigger ones. Only problem is, as the tubes bend in the middle, the flow is cut quite a bit. Was better off with the smaller, more flexible tubes but too lazy to get some more. Not sure of flow but its not as much as b4 or as much as I would like. No harm to the tank. Just have to regulate my pump more.
You need to get rid of the flexible tubes and go with pvc pipe and 2 elbows to make your u-tube and lower pipe to the sump. You want to use all one inch then you will be able to crank your pump and get a bigger one later. Also remove that filter stuff you have on that flexible tube. If it pugs with something you are going to have a little flood.
Good luck with that puffer as it most likely will eat that shrimp and any corals. I've had salt tanks for 14 years and had my share of puffers that got to be trouble and ended up selling back.
Currently have a small filter hanging on the top tank for light particle filtration and extra water movement. The water level in the sump has to be kept low so a hang on filter isnt possible.
Petco basically has HS kids working in their fish dept. I admit, I have found a few that had some pretty educated people but for the most part you'll get someone who knows nothing about fish taking care of them. I went to one store that had the lights not working on 4-5 tanks for a few weeks. You pay more at the mom and pops for fish but it really is worth it sometimes.
you are SOOOOO right. petco's fish people are pretty un-educated. the petco near my house, has a quarantine sign on 75% of the aquariums. the signs are there ALL of the time too.
hay to dat is fri day and i looked at my two damsle fish and one of them has this airea where this red and brown stuff is and the srange part it is ther evry mornig when i turn the lights on do you now what it is plz help im in fl oh and i got the over flow box thx .
hay nice sump i have a 29 and no sump so can you tell me where you got the specimen boxes i looked a every prt store and they ditin hapen and sorry about the mandrine and remeber to get a pc for that sump if you want to frag i doo it and it is sooooooooooooo easy well ples tell me at my page iok thanks
Just type "Lee's specimen box" in google and you should be able to order them. You need one large and one small. You can get you lfs to order them for you also. They usually have them at all stores but are always in use by the employees to transport fish. Thanks for comment.
Lexdiamond20, Thanks for posting this vid series. I just got the plans for the same overflow and wondered how difficult it would be to make. Seems like it is doable.
Not difficult at all if you have some intelligence. Though I found that you have to modify a few things as you see fit. I think I mentioned the few things in the vids. Good luck.
Correct, they were black percs if your talking about the ones I think you are. Had two of the, put them in quarentine which stressed them the hell out and lost one when I finally placed them in my dt. I now look at quarentining as a waste of time and money. Those guys were $40 a pop. Just buy from a reputable shop and you shouldnt have to worry about quarentining.
sorry to here that but what i do is drip acclimate my fish for about 30 minutes and the put them im the tank not adding the water though i have a cinnimon clown for 1 and a half years now and that proccess works get
What kind and how many gallon is your container in your sump? are u using live rocks as a filter dude? corals like live rocks right? is your fish tank a 10 gallon right?
Not sure of the container in the sump. Its just a plastic tub that I got from Target that fit perfectly. Drilled some holes in it and dumped my rocks in. Of course live rock, best way to go. Also has an air powered skimmer in the sump that help with filtration. Live rock is a neccesary especially with coral.
ha your answer to evrything is clamps, also i would do so research on the puffer fish and the lion fish, puffer will eat corals and the lion fish will eat small fish which is mayby why the angel fish is hiding (puffers safe because he's poisonous) probably
he'll eat your snails and puffer will do that too,

always have your return a slower rate than your drain...you're overflow will only drain as much that is pumped back up

More flow through the sump!! and ya might as well turn it into a Fuge for better nutrient export keep us posted
SiGuy8302 3 years ago
Thought of doing the fuge thing but I would have to upgrade to a larger tank as there's no room at all for anything else in the sump.
lexdiamond20 3 years ago
Nice work. But i would've use pvc pipes instead of the vinyl tubes though, so you can take out the clamps.
iLLaPiNo83 3 years ago
Yeah I didnt realize that till everything was done. Clamps arent too much of a hassle though. Pretty cheap at Home Depot.
